Riley's moreau intergration Riley 1 Philip Riley 10/24/2021 Moreau Integration The Way I Shape My Life Prompt: What do I believe? The way you attack this prompt is by searching within yourself and discovering what beliefs were instilled into you from a young age. Here are some root beliefs that I was raised on when I was a kid. I believe that my purpose in life is to give back to the community that i was raised in and too change people life for the better. The way I have come to believe this is that my mom used to tell my siblings and I that its the people who were born strong to protect those who are not as fortunate or strong enough to protect themselves; the way this influences my decisions is that I go out my way to help others and I try to put myself in a position to give back. Another root belief that I have is that I believe that I grow by surrounding myself wih successful and motivated people. Since I was young I was told by my football coaches is that the way you get ahead in life is by surrounding yourself with people who want success for themselves because if you are around people who do bad or not motivated it can affect the way you act or carry yourself. In highschool this belief was challenge constantly because you are surrounded by others who are still searching for their meaning in life and by people who are just trying to find the easy way out of situations. The way I combated this was I stayed away from those type of people and kept working to make my goals reality. The last root belief I am going to talk about is 2 that I believ that I am responsible for shaping my future and how I want to live my life when I retire. I was told often as a kid that one day my future will be my responsibility and the choices I make will come with a set of consequences so from that point on I have been making sure that I take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way so that I can set myself up for success in the future. In recent years my beliefs have not change much but they have adapted to my circumstances and the environment that I am in like my recent transition to Notre Dame. Week one’s QQC deals with ones sense of belonging. When I first saw the focus question "In what ways may courage, vulnerability, and belonging be a part of my search?" I thought about my recent transition to Notre Dame and how when I first got here I stayed to myself and was stressed out because it was a big step in my life football and academically speaking but as I started to find my footing and meet some nice people, I realized with the help of (“The Power of Vulnerability” by Brené Brown - Moreau FYE Week One) that the only way I am going to find what I have been searching for is by making myself vulnerable. By making myself vulnerable I will be able to learn from others a which in return will make me feel like I am part of a healthy community (sense of belonging). Week two’s QQC deals with searching for self-knowledge. The (VIA Character Strengths Survey (VIA Adult Survey) helped me find out more about myself and the different characteristics which could help me at my time at Notre Dame like building connections and finding opportunities to help better myself. Week three’s QQC talks about Searching for a Framework. This deals with how religion and faith dictates how I view world and the people around me. (“Faith Brings Light to a Dark World” by Professor David Fagerberg - Moreau FYE Week Three) helped me think about how I approach every situation in regard to my religion (christianity). I believe that sticking close to Faith, Hope and Love it will help me be 3 more positive and think about the world more lightly. Accepting God into my life has helped me tremendously with the many unique situations that I have encountered. Week four QQC deals with Searching for Life-Giving Relationships which caught my attention because I am a firm believer that who you surround yourself with is who you become and if you surround yourself with people who are motivated then you wil be motivated too but if you surround yourself with lazy people than you will be lazy as well. The article (“Healthy Vs. Unhealthy Relationships" by The Red Flag Campaign - Moreau FYE Week four) helped me identify what relationships that I have are beneficial to me (healthy) and what relationships are not beneficial to me and bringing me down (toxic). Week five QQC talks about Identifying Narratives and how my development relates to Notre Dames mission. (“Letter to Bl. Basil Moreau" by Fr. Sorin - Moreau FYE Week five) discusses God’s will and the begining of Notre Dame and its mission. Week six QQC talks about Identifying Influences. I think about where I am from and how my childhood friends and experiences influenced me and made me who I am today. (“Where Im from poem” by George Ella Lyon - Moreau FYE Week six) is a poem describing George’s early life like how it was and what he was like; he also talks about where he is from and what his family was like. Week seven QQC is about identifying perspectives and implicit bias which is discussed in the text (“"How to Think About 'Implicit Bias'"” by Keith Payne, Laura Niemi, and John M. Doris, Scientific American- Moreau FYE Week seven) this helped me understand that most individuals are implicitly biased even if they do not think of themselves as it; so I started to think about instances I might be biased in and how I can improve myself in that aspect which will help me be successful in the future at Notre Dame.
