The atmosphere of the Dolce Vita did not influence him at all. On the contrary, the dominant feature of Carlo's character was the strong sense of responsibility, perhaps also due to the emotional shortcomings deep- rooted in the status of an orphan. Added to this was his solid. Moreover, his long lasting, passionate research on the sense of truth reveals the close relationship that Carlo had with his conscience. As CNR Researcher, he initially joined the Study Center for Technical Geology. His hunger for knowledge (he described himself as "greedy") soon turned his inter- ests into Quaternary Geology and, almost inevitably, towards the recent tectonics. This phase coincided with his frequentation of the pioneering “Study Group on the Quaternary Padano”, while he completed the geological survey of the Quaternary of the Aterno Valley with his friend Tullio Bertini. Between the end of the '70s and the half of the following decade, all his professional commitment was absorbed first by the preparatory studies and then by the drafting of the Italian Neotectonic Map at a scale of 1:500.00. Thus, a new discipline was born in our coun- try, of which Carlo was the main promoter. In order to cover the entire territory of Italy, the project was divided into multiple operating units that were headed by re- gional coordinators, always in close contact with Carlo. Before the publication of the map, a myriad of publica- tions related to specific fields of study saw the light, all structured according to a strict pattern, so that data and interpretations could then easily be used in the final product. For Carlo it was a coordination work that high- lighted his superior leadership skills, an enterprise of extraordinary proportions. His self-irony helped him overcome frictions and misunderstandings. Once pub- lished, the Map made more than one eyebrow raise and rightly, because it was the result of a very ambitious project, based on less than ten years of study in a totally new field. The road, however, was open: since the be- ginning of the 80s, recent tectonic studies have multi- plied and soon they have interfaced, on a national level, with seismological knowledge. From this combination, seismic microzonation was born, which in recent times has been used as an essential parameter of the legisla- tion related to the type of construction. After the great commitment mentioned above, Carlo returned to his long-standing passion for the sea and bought the Kalinka, a small sailboat, with which he sailed for some years in the Tuscan Archipelago; the routes were mostly planned to spend the end the day of naviga- tion in a good restaurant along the coast! The nautical activity that fascinated him so much was put to an end when he was diagnosed a heart disease in 1990. He passed the passion for the sea on to his children, Vittorio and Sania. In this the warm and relentless assistance of Rita was of immense help. After 1990, he was able to pay more attention to his many other interests: reading, not as an end in itself and always committed, listening to music, traveling to little known or hidden places, the taste for the table. He also had more time to read and write - only for his chil- dren and friends - about philosophy and sociology, a passion that absorbed him a great deal and that cer- tainly was his teacher in dialectic, the daily instrument of his activity as coordinator of the Neotectonic Map of Italy and during his activities as AIQUA president (1994- 1996 and 2004-2006).
