563-567 Effective Ways of Improving Language Learners’ Communication 563 AMERICAN Journal of Language, Literacy and Learning in STEM Education www. grnjournal.us AMERICAN Journal of Language, Literacy and Learning in STEM Education Volume 01, Issue 09, 2023 ISSN (E): 2993-2769 Effective Ways of Improving Language Learners’ Communication Skills through Story-Based Approach Berdiyeva Sitora Utkerovna Asia International University, English Chair Abstract Communication is an essential part of human interaction. Whether we are connecting with friends, family, colleagues, or even strangers, effective communication plays a vital role in building relationships and understanding one another. Strong communication skills can lead to better opportunities in both personal and professional life, making it a skill worth enhancing and improving. One of the best methods to enhance communication skills in teaching is story-based approach. In this article this approach will be thoroughly discussed and analyzed. Keywords: story-based approach, communication skill, pre, while, post listening activities, language acquisition, interactive, narrative, contextualization, storytelling, acting. Introduction Education is an art form that requires creativity, innovation, and adaptability to cater to each student's needs. While various teaching methods exist, the story-based approach has emerged as an influential tool for engaging students and deepening their understanding of academic concepts. By incorporating narratives and storytelling techniques across different subjects, educators can create a stimulating and interactive learning environment that ignites students' interests and enhances their retention. A teaching or learning strategy known as the "story-based approach" places a strong emphasis on using narratives, anecdotes, or made-up stories to engage students and help them learn. In a story-based approach, the content or subject matter is presented in the form of a story or narrative structure. This can be achieved through various means such as books, movies, role-playing activities, or even interactive digital platforms. The story serves as a vehicle for delivering information, illustrating real-life scenarios, or exploring different perspectives on a particular topic. Materials and methods Stories have been an integral part of human society since ancient times. As a species, we are wired to connect with narratives, allowing us to make sense of the world around us. This innate connection with storytelling can be leverage in the classroom to captivate and inspire learners. By presenting academic content through narratives, educators can engage students emotionally, intellectually, and creatively, making complex subjects more relatable and accessible. The story- based approach has been studied and explored by various researchers, educators, and experts in the field of education and instructional design. Many psychologists studied and analyzed this approach from different perspectives, like Jerome Bruner, who wrote about the significance of narrative and storytelling in learning to convey information effectively. Pupils like listening to stories, because while listening they broaden their imagination and pretend themselves like the heroes of the story. Therefore, it can be observed several ways of using story-based approach. The commonly used method is storytelling: teachers can also tell 564 AMERICAN Journal of Language, Literacy and Learning in STEM Education www. grnjournal.us stories to the learners, using gestures, props, and visuals to enhance understanding. Learners can then retell the story or even create their own versions. The other way is Role-playing: Learners can act out scenes from a story, taking on the roles of the characters. This activity promotes speaking skills, creativity, and language confidence. Lastly, Reading or listening comprehension: Teachers can select or create stories suitable for the language level of the learners. After reading or listening to the story, various comprehension activities can be done to reinforce language skills. Stories hold the power to evoke emotions and foster empathy. Too often, traditional teaching methods limit student involvement to passive listening and rote memorization. However, the story-based approach encourages active participation, enabling students to become active protagonists in their own learning journeys. By involving students in the narrative, either as characters or by analyzing the plots and themes, educators can nurture critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and imaginative thinking. This approach allows students to connect with the material on a deeper level, promoting higher levels of engagement and knowledge retention. When students connect with characters and their experiences in stories, they develop a sense of empathy and emotional intelligence. This valuable skill enables students to understand different perspectives, appreciate diversity, and develop better interpersonal relationships. By examining characters' decisions and moral dilemmas, students can engage in thought-provoking discussions that nurture their ethical reasoning and decision-making abilities. Results Storytelling creates a bridge between abstract academic concepts and real-world applications. When weaving a story around a particular subject, educators establish a context that enables students to understand how the knowledge gained can be applied in various scenarios. This contextual learning approach not only deepens comprehension but also allows students to see the relevance of the subject matter in their daily lives. Understanding the "why" behind knowledge helps students make connections and motivates them to retain and use that knowledge in their future endeavors. According to the research we can find out some following effective ways to improve language learners' communication skills through a story-based approach. Firstly, choosing engaging and relatable stories: Select stories that are interesting and relevant to the language learner's level and interests. This will help to maintain their motivation and engagement throughout the language learning process. 2. Pre-reading/listening activities: Before reading or listening to a story, provide learners with pre-reading/listening activities to activate their background knowledge, introduce new vocabulary, and set the context. This can include discussions, brainstorming, or vocabulary exercises. 3. Interactive read-alouds: While reading the story aloud, encourage learners to actively participate by asking questions, making predictions, or summarizing what they've understood so far. This will enhance their comprehension skills and encourage them to engage with the story. 4. Post-reading/listening activities: After completing the story, engage learners in various post- reading/listening activities to promote communication. This can include discussions, role-plays, debates, or group projects based on the story's themes or characters. These activities allow learners to express their thoughts and opinions, practice new vocabulary and grammar, and improve their fluency and accuracy. 5. Vocabulary and grammar exercises: Using the story as a context, integrate vocabulary and grammar exercises to reinforce language skills. For example, you can have learners create flashcards with new vocabulary words, complete fill-in-the-blank exercises related to the story, or create their own sentences using specific grammar structures from the story. 6. Writing activities: Teacher should provide learners with writing tasks related to the story which require communication skills. This can include writing a summary, a creative continuation of the story, or a dialogue between characters. Encourage learners to use newly acquired vocabulary and grammar structures in their writing. 565 AMERICAN Journal of Language, Literacy and Learning in STEM Education www. grnjournal.us 7. Peer feedback and evaluation: Incorporating opportunities for learners to provide feedback and evaluate their peers' work. This can be done through group discussions, peer editing of written pieces, or presenting their work to each other. By actively engaging in the feedback process, learners can improve their ability to give and receive constructive criticism, as well as learn from their peers' ideas and perspectives. Conclusion The story-based approach adds an element of excitement and enjoyment to the learning process. Stories spark curiosity, imagination, and creativity, creating a positive and engaging classroom environment. By making education a memorable experience, students are more likely to retain information and develop a long-lasting love for learning. Moreover, the memorable connections created through stories provide a foundation for future learning, allowing students to build upon previous knowledge and reinforce connections between different subjects. Incorporating a story- based approach in teaching offers numerous benefits that extend beyond the traditional classroom setting. By leveraging the power of narratives, educators create engaging and interactive learning experiences that foster critical thinking, nurture empathy, and promote creative problem-solving. This approach encourages students to become active participants and lifelong learners who understand the context and relevance of the knowledge acquired. Embracing the story-based approach can truly unlock the potential of every student, creating a foundation for a brighter and more fulfilling educational journey. Reference: 1. J.
