Imagine a giant grid where rows are users and columns are products, filled with ones and zeros representing purchases. The system finds users with similar buying patterns (think of similar rows in the grid) and recommends products those users bought but a specific user hasn't (the missing ones) This is great for niche recommendations, but struggles with new users (cold start) and can get stuck on popular items.
