The 2011 Analecta 

When I started this project last fall my hope was to include as many different authors as I could and 
with a record number of submissions in all genres (except comics), I was able to do just that. I am also hap­
py to say that our runner ups will be showcased on our website (www.iusbanalecta.wordpress.com) under a 
special tab to launch in June. I'm sorry for those who were not able to make either the website or the jour­
nal and encourage you to submit again next year. Initially my goal was to give feedback to every artist but 
due to our later than normal deadline and the amount of submissions we were not able to do that. However, 
I hope that everyone who did and did not get in continue to work on your art. 

After sitting down with Jeff Tatay, cover artist, I already knew what I wanted. He had posted a pic­
ture to his face book that I was in awe of for some time and wanted something similar. However, if I wanted 
to tie our cover to the campus theme of working it would have made the picture slightly inappropriate. Af­
ter some deliberation we decided that the picture of worker ants was the most appropriate for both the cover 
and the campus theme. Especially since a significant population of IU South Ben d's students also work in 
addition to taking classes. 

I hope you enjoy this year's selection of work. There was a lot of effort from both the creators of 
the work and those working on the journal and I appreciate everything everyone has done. Thank you and 
enjoy.

Special Thanks 

There were a lot of people that help make this journal happen this year. First I would like to thank 
Dr. Kelcey Parker who gave me the chance to put this journal together. Our beautiful flyers this year were 
created by JeffTatay. The amazing picture and design was unique and helped correlate with the black and 
white theme I wanted for the cover. Joe Kuharic helped with putting up the flyers, a task that needed as 
many hands as I could get. This was a key aspect to getting advertising to other departments so that we 
could encourage submissions from as many different departments on campus as possible. Next, I would 
like to thank Anne Richmond for helping me figure out a schedule and coordinating with me to ensure we 
had all the submissions. Without her help there were a few things that might not have gotten done. Deb­
bie Richards was a huge help in deciding all the little details of the book and took the time to ensure I had 
everything I needed when it came to my purchasing order. For all the advice and friendship I would like to 
thank Rebecca Gibson, Editor-in-Chief of the Undergraduate Research Journal, and Noel Ullery, Editor-in­
Chief of New Views on Gender. I hope next year's journals work together as well as we have. Lastly, I want 
to thank all the teachers that let me into their classrooms and helped recruit submissions. Thank you all, for 
all that you have done, even those not mentioned here.
