Playthings of the Viennese Child 

The Viennese child treasures 
chocolate and oranges and palaces 
of marzipan. Her grandfather, historical 
in his grey and green suit, remembers when the spacious 
opera was bombed. And restored. New architecture, 
and pigeons coming back in new-gathered collections. 

And the Viennese child gathers collections 
of leaves and chestnuts as treasures 
from the Prater, while the architecture 
of,the giant Wheel is set in motion, a quarter turn at 

a time. Palaces 
open into spacious 
gardens too, and children play, happy and running and 
happy and running and 

fierce against the sunshine, scuffing with their 
shoes the white stones of things historical.
