Research on the Application of "Harmony" in The Religious 
Work of College Students in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract: To guide the college students' religious beliefs and adapt to the socialist society, the 
cultivation to correct understanding of relationship between religion and the new era of socialism 
with Chinese characteristics of future talent, boost "adhere to the Orientation of Chinese religion" 
was deepened. This paper explores the inner relationship between the "harmony" thought of 
Traditional Chinese medicine and the focus of religious work in colleges and universities, aiming at 
the problems existing in the religious work in colleges and universities, the vital qi "harmony" evil, 
treatment of ideas "harmony", "harmony" applied to religious work of health preserving measures of 
improvement, proposed "often" "long" grasp "solid" and "fine" "reduced" new methods, such as 
"control" in promoting religious work efficient and at the same time promoting cultural heritage and 
development of traditional Chinese medicine.

1. Introduction 
As an important part of Traditional Chinese culture, TCM culture has gradually refined its core 

values after thousands of years of great waves. The core values of TCM culture can be condensed 
into four words: "benevolence, harmony, precision and sincerity", among which "harmony" is the 
concentrated embodiment of the core values and thinking mode of TCM, and is the soul of TCM. In 
the 21st century, China is experiencing great changes unprecedented in a century. As the pillar of the 
construction of the motherland, contemporary college students must consciously improve their 
professional and political qualities. Attaching importance to and strengthening the religious work of 
college students has become the top priority of the united front work in the new era. The thought of 
"harmony" in traditional Chinese medicine has been inherited and developed for thousands of years, 
which contains abundant philosophical thoughts and enjoys unique advantages in its guidance and 
application. Give full play to the role of, maintaining the united front work, to realize the great 
Renaissance, the cultural confidence of the Chinese nation and will dig deep thought "harmony" 
essence of traditional Chinese medicine, and expand its application to give priority to with college 
students' religious work of college students in the united front work, guide the college students will 
be adapted to the socialist society of religious belief. To cultivate talents who can correctly view and 
handle the relationship between religion and socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, 
and help promote the further integration and development of traditional Chinese medicine culture and 
"Adhering to the Orientation of Chinese religion". 

2. Problems faced by university students in religious United Front work  

2.1 Weak bottom-line thinking and insufficient defense of religious activities in and out of 
school 

In today's society, with an open campus as the main melody in the colleges and universities, brings 
together a large number of preliminary forms the outlook on life, has certain value judgment but faith

then gradually become the development object of various religious organizations. Different from 
other educational work, university students' religious united Front work is affected by western hostile 
forces and Chinese traditional factors, so it faces more complex and diverse new situations and 
challenges. On the one hand, Sino-us relations continue to deteriorate, and a new cold war mentality 
based on the ideology of "new theocracy" and the old geopolitical goals has emerged [3,4]. One of 
its manifestations is the political and cultural infiltration of China through religion in order to 
undermine China's ideological security. As an important cornerstone of China's future development, 
college students shoulder the mission of influencing and building China in the future, but they also 
have the inevitable characteristic that their value judgment is not mature and firm, which is the most 
critical and weak link in religious work. On the other hand, religious infiltration is also influenced by 
Chinese traditional factors, mainly manifested as the religious influence at the family level. If there 
are members with religious beliefs in the family, students can easily become religious believers based 
on the influence of blood relationship, traditional thoughts, daily edification and other factors, as well 
as mass religious behaviors such as burning incense and worshiping Buddha and ancestor worship. 
The complex and universal external environment and the confusion of religion itself make the bottom 
line thinking of colleges and universities gradually fuzzy, invisible in reducing the threshold of 
religious infiltration, so that the infiltration and dissemination of religious activities become simple, 
and eventually lead to the status quo of insufficient defense of religious activities inside and outside 
the school. 

2.2 Weakened dialectical thinking, insufficient guidance to college students on religious issues 
Religious belief is a special ideological and cultural phenomenon, which is the phased embodiment 

of human spirit and has the function of comforting the believer's heart. College students are not 
completely independent in psychological aspects, and they lack a sense of security and belonging in 
their hearts. They are eager to find a new "shelter" in a strange environment, and religious activities 
can meet their inner needs. Facing the psychological demands of college students, schools often have 
the disadvantages of insufficient guidance. Before students contact with religion, on the one hand, 
the school does not generally on religious education, and, when students begin to contact religious 
school difficult to respond in a timely manner to guide students to understand and dialectical view of 
the advantages and disadvantages of religion, which leads to students often without reasonable 
balance and then accept religion in general; On the other hand, the school's insufficient propaganda 
of Marxist atheist religious view is also an important reason why students cannot objectively analyze 
and correctly deal with religion-related problems. 

2.3 Weak strategic thinking, insufficient attention to the campus religious united Front 
The work of preventing religious infiltration in colleges and universities is generally affected by 

religious events, that is, religious events decide whether to carry out religious work. Typically, 
religious colleges and universities united front work often happens in religious issued by relevant 
government policy, social of malignant events as a result of religious beliefs, such religious united 
front work efficiency is high, but its distribution is dotted on the timeline, cannot produce long-lasting

2.4 The basic foundation is not firm, and the "real" and "fine" efforts are not good 
Buddhism and Taoism have been formed and spread in China for about 2,000 years. Influenced 

by it, more or less religious behaviors, such as praying for blessings in temples, praying to Buddha 
and forwarding koi carp, are common among teachers and students in colleges and universities. After 
a long time of development, people have become accustomed to these behaviors, and it is hard to tell 
whether they are religious behaviors or ordinary behaviors. This has led to the invisible infiltration

of religion, further weakening the grass-roots basis of religious work. Secondly, religious work is 
different from professional education work in colleges and universities. Compared with the education 
work which is directly related to the reputation of colleges and universities and students' performance, 
religious work is obviously lack of competition with it, which leads to the current situation that both 
schools and students do not pay attention to it. The related religious work is easy to float on the 
surface and cannot be in-depth, and there are defects of "falling" but not "solid", "falling" but not 
"detailed". 

2.5 The improvement of achievements is unstable, and the work of "reduction" and "control" 
is slackened 

Before the development of religious work in colleges and universities, work objectives are often 
formulated to guide the work and achieve expected results. But after the religious work, especially 
when the set goals are completed, it is not uncommon for colleges and universities to neglect the 
consolidation of achievements. Specifically, some religious believers still believe in religion, those 
who have given up religion believe in religion again, those who have not believed in religion try to 
believe in religion, and the number of teachers and students who believe in religion does not decrease 
or even increase. The early stage of the religious work to carry out the effect is almost zero. Religious 
work is different from the mafias, later whether to consolidate its work in a short time, the difference 
is small, the resulting "complicit" complacency that generates religious party work, ignoring the late 
continue to consolidate the results, and in reducing storage point to add slacker in work, a negative 
impact on the final results. 

3. The relationship between the "harmony" thought of Traditional Chinese 
medicine and the religious united front work in colleges and universities 

3.1 The thought of "harmony" in the core value of TCM culture 
The core value of traditional Chinese medicine culture contains the ancient people's simple 

cognition of the world and their requirements for their own moral cultivation, which can be 
summarized by virtue, harmony, refinement and sincerity. Among them, the thought of "harmony" 
or "harmony" is reflected in different forms in Confucianism and Taoism. The Confucian classic Da 
Yu Mo of The Book of Shang states: "The heart of the people is only dangerous, and the heart of 
Taoism is only small; Only fine only, keep to the center.” “Keep to the center " embodies the idea of 
"neutralization" and has been praised by later Confucianism. The Taoist works Lao Zi said: "Empty 
and unyielding, moving and more out, many words poor, better to keep the middle. “It holds that 
keeping "Zhong" is the way to keep "Tao", and "harmony" is the state of "Tao". From the perspective 
of the development of Traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine is derived from 
traditional Chinese philosophy and the two are closely related. The content of "harmony" is extremely 
rich, which is reflected in "harmony between nature and man", "harmony between man and myself", 
"harmony between form and spirit" and "harmony between Yin and Yang" from the view of nature, 
society, body and therapy [8,9].It is because of conforming to the concept of "harmony" that life can 
flow ceaselessly, and only "harmony" can life achieve the highest state of health, happiness and

3.2 The relationship between the thought of harmony and religious work in TCM 
3.2.1 The "harmony" of positive and evil spirits and the bottom-line thinking of religious 
work 

It is said in Su Wen, the treatise on acupuncture in the last chapter that "the healthy qi is kept in 
the body, and the evil qi cannot be done", that is, the strong healthy qi in the body, the evil qi cannot 
invade and interfere with the health of the human body. When mapped to the religious work in 
colleges and universities, the bottom line of religious work is "righteous spirit", and the external 
religious infiltration force is "evil spirit". It reveals that one of the reasons for the problems of college 
students' religious work is the failure to keep "righteous spirit", that is, the lack of the bottom line of

evil spirits and ensure the healthy life state of the human body, while external religious forces cannot 
penetrate. 
3.2.2 The "harmony" of healing thoughts and the strategic thinking of religious work 

In the long process of its formation and development, TCM has established many effective 
treatment principles and methods, one of which is "strengthening the body resistance to eliminate 
pathogenic factors”. The foundation of college students' religious work is to truly implement religious 
education, and to perfect the shortcomings of college students' religious work with long-term and 
effective measures. However, when there are problems in religious work, it is far from enough to only 
seek for the root, follow the rules, support the "healthy spirit" of the work and remove the "evil spirit" 
of the external invasion, but also based on the "harmony" of TCM treatment thought, seek a 
breakthrough in the long struggle between the two, and look at their long-term balance relationship 
from a long-term perspective. Under the guidance of the thought of "harmony", on the one hand, we 
can help the healthy qi, mobilize the body to resist evil, and enhance the body's resistance to disease; 
On the other hand, get rid of disease evil, evil to positive self-safety, so that the balance of Yin and 
Yang return to the body, the whole-body qi and blood to achieve and tone state. To sum up, only by 
grasping the foundation of religious work, treating and balancing the advantages and disadvantages 
between internal and external good and evil in a long-term perspective and putting theory into practice 
can we realize the harmony between good and evil and do a good job in religious work in a regular 
and long-term way. 
3.2.3 The "harmony" of health preservation thought and dialectical thinking of religious 
work 

Huangdi Neijing points out that human health changes with wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness 
and fire, as well as with anger, joy, anxiety, thought and fear. The effectiveness of religious work also 
varies with the gender, age, educational level, living environment and professional differences of the 
target. It can be seen that the health preservation work of TCM and the religious work of college 
students are affected by many factors and have similar points, which can be used for reference. The 
ancients generally had two basic views on health preservation, namely, the overall view of 
"correspondence between heaven and man" and the preventive view of "healthy qi is kept inside and 
evil cannot be done". That is, to conform to the law of change in nature, to achieve the organic unity 
of human and external environment; Internal to maintain a good state of mind, strengthen exercise, 
to maintain the balance of human qi, blood and Yin and Yang. It can be seen that the "harmony" of 
the health preservation thought of traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes "the right medicine", that

is, meticulous and detailed nourishing the human body, so does the religious work of college students, 
from which it can be concluded that religious work should be "fine", "reduced" and "controlled". 

4. Measures to improve the work on the religious front based on the 
“harmony” thought of traditional Chinese medicine 

4.1 Strengthen the thinking of the bottom line and work hard on “guarding” 
The bottom line of religious work is “healthy qi”. Only when the healthy qi is full, can it resist evil 

and dispel evil, and maintain “harmony between good and evil”. Therefore, the first step to improve 
religious work is to strengthen the thinking of the bottom line, work hard on the word “shou”, guard 
the bottom line of “no infiltration in school, not engaged in outside”. 
4.1.1 Strengthen the implementation of organizational responsibilities at all levels 

Under the unified leadership of the Party Committee, the Party and government, and the United 
Front Work Department take the lead and coordinate, leading groups, party general branches, party 
branches not only perform their respective duties, but also closely cooperate, conduct pressure layer 
by layer, and strictly implement. We will improve the early warning and emergency response 
mechanisms, grasp relevant information in a timely and comprehensive manner, and effectively and 
properly handle emerging and potential problems. Strictly implement the system of timely reporting 
of special circumstances to ensure that once an emergency occurs, the personnel of all relevant 
departments can respond quickly and properly handle it according to the division of responsibilities. 
The working committee of government organs and the general Branch of the Communist Party of 
China (CPC) are responsible for religious work in their respective units. The members of the leading 
group consciously strengthen the study of religious theories and regulations, and appoint members of 
the United Front Committee and the secretary of the youth League branch of each class as religious 
information officers to ensure that schools and colleges have first-hand information in the first place. 
To improve the ability of the party branch, the organization, make full use of the thematic party day 
activity of teachers and students in the "power" study platform to study the party's basic theory 
knowledge, strengthen students' understanding of communism, fully give play to the role of party 
branch of guide education, play a party branch secretary and members in check, the specific role of 
guidance, education, transformation, etc. 
4.1.2 Manage key groups well 

Focus on strengthening the education and management of foreign teachers, overseas students and 
students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In the case of foreign teachers, overseas students and 
students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan with religious beliefs, the university shall strictly 
follow the relevant laws and regulations of the State and the Ministry of Education and do a good job 
in the management. Will abide by the law of the People's Republic of China regulations on foreign 
religious activities within the territory as one of the first requirements of foreign teachers in the school 
teaching, foreign teachers and students of religion and normal religious beliefs give full respect for 
all Taiwanese students, but a clear requirements shall not interfere with the normal teaching order 
and teaching activities, shall not be a missionary and organize religious activities on campus, And 
regularly carry out education on China's religious policies and related laws and regulations. 
4.1.3 Three mechanisms for establishing battle lines to defend "Guarding" 

We will establish three mechanisms for implementing the front-line defense. First, the mechanism

departments often meet with each other in a timely manner according to the relevant situation, and 
meet with each other at any time in special circumstances to ensure that they grasp first-hand 
information, analyze the situation, and take measures to solve the problem from the root, and 
resolutely do a good job in resisting religious infiltration and campus communication. Third, the 
emergency response mechanism. We will further improve the early warning and emergency response 
mechanism, strictly implement the timely reporting system for special cases, and ensure that all 
relevant departments and units can respond quickly to emergencies once they occur and properly

4.2 Strengthen dialectical thinking and work hard on "guidance" 
In order to achieve the long-term "harmony between internal and external, good and evil", we must 

dialectically look at the balance of advantages and disadvantages between "internal and external good 
and evil”. Analogy to the religious issue, if you want to get better working effect, it is necessary to 
strengthen the dialectical thinking, dialectical view of religion and religious problems, adhere to the 
positive publicity and education, work on the character "guide", actively guide religions to adapt 
themselves to the socialist society, "guide" of its application, "the guide" strong, "the guide”, Firmly 
grasp the initiative in carrying out religious work. 
4.2.1 Strengthen the educational management of teachers and students 

We will continue to educate teachers and students on Marxist religious views and legal knowledge 
about religious beliefs in China, strengthen persuasion and guidance of religious teachers and students, 
actively guide them to be virtuous, and vigorously promote, study and practice core socialist values. 

First, we will strengthen the construction of teachers' ethics. The Party Committee of the 
University stressed the importance of teachers' ethics construction, set up a teachers' ethics 
construction Committee, formulated and introduced institutional measures, and clearly listed 
"spreading religion and organizing religious activities on campus" as teachers' professional taboos. 

Second, give full play to the role of ideological and political theory courses as the main channel to 
strengthen the education of Marxist views on religion and atheism to students. Give full play to the 
role of ideological and political theory courses as the main channel, so that students can master and 
use the basic theory of Marxism to objectively analyze and correctly treat religious beliefs, and form 
a scientific and correct view of religion. The system of collective preparation for ideological and 
political theory courses has been established, and the basic principles and main points of religious 
education have been formulated in the curriculum and training programs. Teaching the basic points 
of China's religious policy; To help students establish a correct view of religion and guide them to 
view religious phenomena objectively, comprehensively and dialectically; When teaching ideological 
and political theory courses, teachers should conduct atheism education of historical materialism 
through practical cases, and explain religious culture in an in-depth and concise way, so as to enable 
college students to form a rational understanding of religion. 

The third is to strengthen the grasp of teachers' teaching content, through the cameras and other

guide students to establish correct values. We will give full play to the role of literature and art in 
educating people through physical education and by setting good examples. Give full play to the 
educational role of network information culture, call on teachers and students to actively participate 
in the creation of Internet cultural works, use WeChat public account, Weibo, QQ and other online 
media to spread advanced ideas and culture through the network, organize teachers and students to 
watch the exhibition of excellent works, firmly grasp the correct guidance of public opinion. Give 
full play to the role of student associations, and fully internalize the ideological and political 
theoretical knowledge they have learned through association activities and exchange and learning 
between association members, so as to promote the religious management work. 
4.2.2 Publicity and guidance work covering teachers and students 

In terms of publicity, education and guidance, "four comprehensive coverage" has been achieved. 
First, freshmen (new workers) enter a school (enter a job) education to cover completely. In the 

orientation of new students, religious policies and regulations are arranged. At the same time, through 
holding thematic class meeting, thematic Party Day, thematic youth league day and other activities, 
increase students' understanding of the development process of the Party and league, adhere to do in-
depth ideological education work. In the training of new teachers, special publicity and education on 
religious policies and regulations have been carried out. 

Second, Old living (old worker) daily propaganda education full coverage. Pay attention to play 
to the role of main channel of the daily classroom, through the "situation and policy", "thought morals 
tutelage and legal foundation", the basic principle of Marxism and ideological and political theory 
courses, enable students to master and apply the basic theory of Marxism method objective analysis 
and the right attitude towards religion problem, form a system of cognition on this issue. Teachers 
are organized to study religion-related policies and regulations on a regular basis through special 
reports, verify the religious beliefs of existing teachers and students on a regular basis, pay close 
attention to them, and continue to carry out education and guidance. 

Third, special Party classes covering all Party members (active party members). Regularly hold 
special party lesson education activities for Party members, probationary party members and active 
party applicants, popularize religious laws and regulations in China, give full play to the exemplary 
and leading role of Party members and active Party applicants, and guide, publicize and educate 
students. The Organization Department of the Party Committee has incorporated party and state 
theories, principles and policies on religious issues into daily education and training plans for cadres 
and training courses at Party schools. 

Fourth, it covers all teachers and students who believe in religions with persuasion, guidance, help 
and guidance. We should put people first, persuade people with reason, and move people with 
emotion. We should focus on macro and micro aspects and carry out in-depth and detailed ideological 
work. In daily work, I followed up and studied the adjustment and supplement of religious issues 
made by the CPC Central Committee, and publicized and educated the relevant meetings and 
documents of relevant departments at higher levels on religious work, as well as the newly revised 
Regulations on Religious Affairs and other religion-related policies. Through course learning,

actively regulate their own psychology. Schools should increase mental health elective courses and 
take various measures to achieve full coverage of mental health knowledge education. Through the 
characteristic activities, guide the college students to maintain a positive attitude towards life, enhance 
the ability to resist setbacks. Organize students to observe the deeds of outstanding people, hold 
activities such as mental health month, make full use of QQ, Weibo, WeChat public account and other 
media to provide students with a broader channel to understand mental health knowledge, but also 
provide assistance for classroom professors. Solve psychological confusion through key intervention. 
Prevent students from turning to religion because of psychological problems. Corresponding 
intervention measures should be established for the common psychological problems in the growth 
process of college students, such as psychological lectures, psychological interviews, psychological 
tests and other activities to help students out of the dilemma. Against religious students and staff, 
nuanced work, more contact, more talk, more help, especially in view of the religious teachers and 
students have difficulty, to provide more help guide, forming cadres and difficult "one to one" support, 
teachers and students to really difficult on teachers and students from the heart to feel the warmth of

religious teachers and students, ethnic minority students, foreign teachers, overseas students and

Third, we will further improve our working methods. The state of harmony cannot be achieved in 
a short period of time, nor can religious work be achieved in a single step. In the process of 
transforming the education of religious members, the "three-step" working method can be

system for religious work in the university and all colleges, and conscientiously clarify and implement 
the principal responsibilities of the University Party Committee and the responsibilities of the party 
working committee and the general branches of the Party. A leading group for religious work has

overseas students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as the investigation and 
proper disposal of illegal religious activities. The working committees of government organs and 
general Party branches carry out their respective responsibilities for religious work, do a good job in 
daily education management of teachers and students, strengthen publicity and education of party and 
State policies, laws and regulations related to religion for teachers and students, conduct regular 
checks on teachers and students' religious beliefs, and continue to do a good job in education, 
guidance and transformation of teachers and students who believe in religion.
