BCP Social Sciences & Humanities ADCS 2022 Volume 15 (2022) 171 The Influence and Significance of Contemporary Art Trends on Modernist Landscape Design Yulu Wang, Qiuyue Wang College of Art and Design, Wuhan Textile University, Wuhan, China Abstract. Landscape design has developed very rapidly in recent years, and has made a lot of achievements in our current practical life and teaching practice, but as a relatively independent discipline, landscape design has gradually revealed a lot of problems that we have not paid attention to in the process of development and creation, and these problems need to be further researched and explored. Through analyzing the influence of contemporary art trends on the creation of modernist landscape designers, we hope to solve some of the current problems encountered in Chinese contemporary landscape design, as well as the influence and significance of contemporary art trends on modernist landscape design. Keywords: Art Thinking; Modernism; Landscape Design; Influence and Significance. 1. Introduction After World War II, contemporary art has emerged and developed rapidly. The art of the past is free from the constraints of genres and expresses the artistic concepts of the creators through various artistic means. 2. Contemporary Art Thought and Modernist Landscape Design Artistic thinking refers to a wave of new artistic views and design styles created by artists in the field of art and design under the influence of certain social and philosophical ideas. The art trend has created a wave of modernism style. Artistic trends can be described as a real and visible artwork or an invisible and invisible art spirit. Artistic trends often have: new artistic ideas, new artistic ideas include the designer's new creative ideas and creative tendencies and artistic techniques can reflect the style characteristics of the formation of a wide range of influential group design ideas, is under a certain creative tendencies and artistic ideas of some group activities. Artistic thinking contains behavioral art, designer's viewpoint, designer's style taste, traditional culture and the spirit of our time and the new artistic thinking viewpoint of designers' creation. Under the influence of the art trend, a large number of designers face the great pressure of market competition and the high level of aesthetic demand of the times, which makes many designers have to carry out innovative designs and constantly launch new products to replace some old ones, which makes the design more stringent requirements. Only good design concepts and artistic styles will not be overthrown in the wave of the times. Both the "Arts and Crafts" movement and the "Art Nouveau" movement were firmly opposed to the industrialization and mechanization of production. However, for the development of our contemporary society, it is obvious that the modern industrialized machine production is in line with the development of society, and is more in line with the development of the times, so that artists and designers have found a form of art creation that is in line with their own design, and have created many good art and design works. In this era, a large number of designers and art works have emerged, and some new art works have been formed. For example, the landscape design in futurism. A large number of designers in the modernist period were also painters, and most of their paintings or painting concepts were incorporated into their design works. For example, Corbusier was influenced by Picasso, so we can see some structural characteristics of Cubism in Corbusier's design works. At the same time, the most prominent feature of Corbusier's paintings was the use of a large number of organic curves found in nature, a feature that made the design works of trans-generational importance. At the same time, the concept of mechanical aesthetics also emerged in this period. This concept abandoned the complex shapes of the past and adopted simple shapes, and encouraged the use of new BCP Social Sciences & Humanities ADCS 2022 Volume 15 (2022) 172 materials and technologies to create design works with more fashionable and broad characteristics, more in line with the combination of modernity and aesthetics. 3. Second, Contemporary Art Thinking Provides a Source of Inspiration for the Innovation of Modernist Landscape Design Landscape design emerged from the combination of art and technology. The development of modernist landscape design, both in terms of structure and appearance, is filled with the connotations of ideas from a number of different art schools. Traditional design styles still exist, and we still need to continue to dig and study the use of contemporary art thinking in landscape design. The integration of contemporary art and landscape design is an issue worthy of in-depth study and exploration, which allows us to think about the creation and development of modernist landscape design from another perspective. In the present time, with the continuous progress and development of our society, people's aesthetic and demand for landscape design is also gradually improving. Modernist landscape design not only needs to meet the design of the basic functional needs of the landscape, but also needs to complete the aesthetic and artistic design of the landscape. In the process of modern landscape design, how to apply contemporary art is a very critical issue, which is not only the innovation of modern landscape design thinking, but also the integration of contemporary art thinking and modern landscape design. Design is a kind of artistic behavior that is created by people's thinking to further improve the quality of our life. Landscape design itself is generated by the combination of art and technology, and the two are inseparable. In today's world, people are not as satisfied as in the ancient times that homes only need to provide people with a low level of security and shelter from the wind and rain. People today have increasingly begun to pursue higher-level design needs and higher-level design tastes and needs. Modern landscape design is not only concerned with the appearance, but also in all aspects of design, such as: style, structure, shape and other innovations and artistic design of the beauty. Landscape design is actually a reflection of people's aspiration for beautiful things and a beautiful environment to live in. Compared with the traditional natural ecological environment, it is a product created by designers through design thinking. In the process of development of modern landscape construction, the change of landscape shape and structure also relies on the invention of new materials and technologies, and the landscape shape has also changed from the complex Baroque and Rococo styles to the simple modernist style, which not only reflects the progress of technology and the improvement of people's artistic taste. It also makes the landscape design style has greater feasibility. 4. Third, The Rich Resources of Contemporary Art Thinking Provide a Lot of Material for Modernist Landscape Design The development of contemporary art thinking is a form of continuous progress and development, which constantly creates new art forms, and also inherits the previous classical art design, and on this basis constantly innovates. The influence of contemporary art trends on landscape design is multifaceted, not only in the form of appearance enriching the design of landscape design ideas and artistic language, but also in the deeper level of conceptual awareness of the development of landscape design space has been developed. The influence of contemporary art trends on landscape design is not only limited to the unilateral influence on the concept, but is quietly changing the concept of landscape design little by little. Landscape design is gradually dismantling the previous ideology in the concern for daily life, and the impact of performance art and popular art on landscape design means the birth of some new concept. Contemporary art is especially prominent in the face of changing trends, and landscape design should take advantage of the development of contemporary art and combine it with China's actual national conditions to create landscape design works that are more reasonable and in line with contemporary aesthetics. In a sense, landscape design can no longer be studied simply as an independent discipline, it is more in consideration of human needs and BCP Social Sciences & Humanities ADCS 2022 Volume 15 (2022) 173 reflection on social and environmental issues to obtain progress and breakthroughs, and under the impact of contemporary art, landscape design has taken on a whole new concept. Many artistic creations originally not included in the field of landscape design have been integrated and absorbed into the concept of landscape design, providing a lot of information materials for the development of landscape design. 5. Earth Art Earth art" is one of the Western postmodernist art forms. Earth art" is understood to mean the use of common natural materials such as sand, stone, plants, wind, water, rain, snow, thunder, and electricity to create works of art on the land that relate to people and nature. It is created by concepts that emerge directly from the natural ecosystem or from the natural generation of design." The biggest difference in earth art is the materials it uses and the particular form of design expression. The materials used are integrated with the topography of the surrounding environment, such as using the Gobi, abandoned factories, and barren fields as the site of creation, "The materials used for creation are very simple, uncontaminated materials such as sand and gravel. The artist David Nash's wood sculptures use natural elements as an intrinsic element of his art. From the materials in nature, a new artistic approach is used to discover another new relationship between design and ecology." Earth Art" breaks through the traditional form of creation and integrates design works into the natural ecological environment. We treat "earth art" as a complete artwork and integrate it into our natural landscape in the form of art. For example, in the past, traditional artworks had to be exhibited by art galleries for people to appreciate, and people had to enter the galleries to view the artworks, while earth art completely broke away from the previous form of exhibition, it believes that artworks could have been integrated into nature and become a part of the natural ecological environment, and to appreciate artworks is to put oneself in nature and become a whole with the natural environment. It forms a special and novel new form of landscape design. Smithson's "Spiral Breakwater" is one of the most influential works. The location of "Spiral Breakwater" is on the beach by the Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA. Smithson tools various types of trash and rocks of various colors in the red water of the Salt Lake, which, when viewed from above, resembles a spiral-shaped levee sitting on the edge of the lake. This work cannot really be compared to a traditional picture. Smithson calls it "a gateway to the remains of a prehistoric civilization under the sea." Earth Art's works integrate the modern landscape environment into our contemporary urban life, bringing people closer to nature. Therefore, the works of earth art are mostly between sculpture and landscape works, and gradually occupy a very important position in modern public space design. First of all, the design idea of ecological environment has opened the design vision of many landscape designers, and it has stimulated people's positive significance to the natural ecological environment. The designers want to make people pay more attention to and protect the natural ecological environment, and at the same time, it also considers the ecological pollution (desertification, wasteland, etc.) and changes the ecological environment through their own design. With the development of industrialization of society and the rise of modern urban buildings in large quantities, many designs have a very limited area of green space. A good topographic treatment can change this green phenomenon so that the green space can be integrated with the surrounding environment. The design treats the land as a design element and changes the face of the earth with artificial and subjective forms of artistic expression. Earth art is very beneficial for people to improve the natural ecological environment. It makes the modern urban landscape develop in a better direction. It embodies not only the function of the land but also the humanistic care. It can create not only a great and magnificent natural ecological environment, but also a comfortable and pleasant natural space. Land art allows art to find new sources of design inspiration in a broader space. BCP Social Sciences & Humanities ADCS 2022 Volume 15 (2022) 174 6. The Influence of Contemporary Art Thinking on Modern Landscape Art The genes of our world's civilization have been constantly developing and changing. The reason why contemporary art has been able to amaze the world is that the diversified development space has provided many growth possibilities for contemporary art, and with more opportunities, the proportion of success naturally increases. Our contemporary society is a diversified, information-based network society, because of the convenience of various channels of information exchange and the diversified needs of various industries, the landscape design industry wants to develop better, there must be a diversified form of development landscape design field of the emergence of a variety of schools, the development of the exchange of landscape design has brought many benefits, many of these schools are because of the inculcation of architectural theory derived Many of these schools are derived from architectural theory, such as deconstructionism and late modernism. In landscape design works, there are some shades of art. However, the history of contemporary art shows that it is not enough to confine to the major schools of thought, but to focus on the overall development. Contemporary artists through their own efforts to continue to break through the limitations, develop art, expand space, the pursuit of artistic creation and try a variety of styles and forms, for the spirit of artistic excellence is worthy of the landscape design industry to learn and study. The current landscape design should accept diversified artistic concepts, reconstruct the theoretical logic system of landscape design, and strive for diversified development in the form of expression. For example, the Dutch artist Hoffmann's "Big Yellow Duck", he is based on the classic bath tub in the shape of a small yellow duck toy to design, the use of PVC rubber material to produce a large rubber duck series of artworks, in 2007 to 2018 the designer Hoffmann with his work in China, the United Kingdom, Japan and more than 10 countries and regions have been exhibited, everywhere by the public Everywhere he went, he received widespread attention from the public. The Yellow Duck embodies some of the nostalgia of the designers' designs and immerses people in a state of reminiscence of the good life of the past. It is also integrated into the local landscape environment and becomes part of it, bringing a new visual experience to people. The works of Florentine Hoffmann, exhibited all over the world, seem to become a special aesthetic landscape in the contemporary fast-paced consumer society. The contemporary popular view of culture, art and design makes the aesthetics of art all the time, little by little, into many areas of contemporary public life, quietly changing our single life. 7. Concluding Remarks In summary, it is impossible to divide contemporary art thinking and modernist landscape design, which is a branch of architectural design with social and artistic aspects. The design process is mainly done in terms of aesthetics and functionality. For a long time in the past, art and architecture were almost a system of interaction, in other words, landscape design is somehow equivalent to art creation. Contemporary landscape design is constantly influenced by current cultural and artistic trends, which provide many new sources of inspiration and design inspiration for contemporary landscape designers and are reflected in their designs, bringing many good changes and design inspirations to contemporary landscape design. Contemporary art has not only inspired modernist landscape design in terms of specific design language, but also broadened the perspective of modern landscape design in terms of design artistic concepts and creative ideas. Contemporary art and landscape design both show mutual promotion, common development and progress together. Therefore, it is very necessary for our modern landscape designers to learn and absorb the ideas of contemporary art creation.
