CYE has a global community and connects the worlds of research, policy and practice. The CYE journal is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary, online journal, highlighting the physical environments where children and youth live, learn, work and play. The journal values the capacity of children and young people to meaningfully participate in the processes that shape their lives, and publishes papers from distinct viewpoints, varied approaches, and diverse cultures and regions around the world. The journal offers researchers a high-quality, refereed outlet for sharing work pertaining to the physical environments that impact the lives of children and youth around the world. The journal publishes papers in the form of research articles, field reports and book/media reviews ranging from quantitative and qualitative empirical research; theoretical, methodological, and historical investigations; critical literature reviews; design analyses; post-occupancy evaluations; policy studies; and program assessments. Children, Youth and Environments appeared as a print journal from 1984-1995 as Children’s Environments Quarterly and Children’s Environments. In 2003, it was revived as an online journal, which now reaches readers in more than 160 countries. Readers and authors include researchers and practitioners in education, childhood studies, geography, sociology, child and youth development, child welfare, child rights advocacy, development studies, architecture, landscape architecture and design, urban design, and planning. Some people only find the situation an inconvenience, but manageable. Too many others are besieged with job loss, inadequate housing, and mental health issues and we would like to express our hope for worldwide compassion toward those whose needs are immeasurable and for those who have lost loved ones to the coronavirus. We respect and applaud the health care providers and other essential workers who are on the frontline in the fight to reduce virus casualties and ensure basic needs for others are met. We encourage everyone to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control as businesses and services re-open. You may notice a new look in the Front Matter for this issue of CYE that includes a list of our editors, advisory board, and editorial review board members. We have also acknowledged the many reviewers whose time and commitment to ensuring manuscripts published in CYE are of the highest quality. We would like to express our appreciation for the contributions of the many people who continue to bring interesting research, field reports, and book and media reviews to our esteemed readership. CYE offers a unique niche journal for dissemination of scholarship and practice and we are continually awed by the work submitted by CYE authors. Inside this issue, you will find Tignanelli’s report on the Antipodean Cities project aimed to connect geographically distant cities through children’s collective cartographies. Storli and Green detail their respective research on children’s experiences in outdoor environments and Tejada’s research describes how self and collective efficacy and youth agency are critical to youths’ responses to global environmental change. Fadgen, Kozu, and Prescott’s article provides a comparative analysis of law and policies in three countries as a means for improving children’s safety and welfare after a natural disaster and Caruso and Rosenthal report the findings of their investigation into students’ experiences in the cafeteria. Another interesting article focuses on the tapestry of stories Myers weaves to highlight the struggles and protective factors for LGBTQIAP+ youth.
