the Amercian Folklore Society
announces competition for the 1987

W. W. NEWELL
PRIZE

The Children's Folklore Section of the American Folklore
Society announces competition for the 1987 W. W. Newell
Prize. A $100 cash award for the best student essay on a
topic in children's folklore will be awarded. The paper must
have been written by an undergraduate or graduate student
within the 1986-1987 academic year. Papers published by
students within the same time frame are also eligible.
Students may submit their own papers; instructors are
asked to encourage students with eligible papers to enter the
competition.

Papers must be typed, double-spaced, on white bond
paper. On the first page include the author's name, academic
address, home address, and telephone numbers.

The winner will receive a $100 award at the annual
meeting of the American Folklore Society in Albuquerque,
NM, in October, 1987.The winning paper does not have to
be read at the meeting but entrants are encouraged to
submit abstracts of their papers to the AFS Program
Committee. If the winning paper is read at the meeting it
will be identified as the winner of the Newell Prize.

Deadline for submissions is July 1, 1987. Send 2 copies

. New members wishing back issues of the newsletter can
still purchase them. Volume 1, Number 1,edited by Tom
Burns, is available only in xerox copies; there is a small
stock of all other numbers.

. Anyone preparing a panel or presenting a paper on any
aspect of children's folklore at the 1987 American Folk-
lore Society meeting in Albuquerque is asked to send a
brief description to the Newsletter for publication in the
Fall 1987number.

. There is a Carrot in My Ear, reviewed in CFN V:2, and
More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, reviewed in
CFN VIII:1,both by Alvin Schwartz, have been published
in Harper Trophy editions, (paper) by Harper & Row.

. The Maryland Storytelling Festival will be held on the
campus of Western Maryland College on June 5 & 6.
Featured tellers will be Jon Spelman, Mary Carter Smith,
