A joint e f f o r t of 2 1 7 contributors, this com-
prehensive encyclopedia of w o r l d l i t e r a t u r e is
similar in its general intention to F r a u w a l l -

T h e articles are arranged in three alpha-
betical p a r t s : P a r t I , histories of the l i t e r a -

importance; P a r t I I , biographies of w r i t e r s
w h o died b e f o r e 1 A u g u s t 1 g 1 4 ; P a r t I I I ,
biographies of those living at that time or
born a f t e r it. T h i s partition w a s made to
simplify revision when new editions are being
prepared.

In P a r t I, headings have been selected
mainly on linguistic grounds, with others
chosen because of regional, political, social or
historic bases. M i n o r or little-known litera-
tures are represented. T h e general l i t e r a r y
articles include treatment of v a r i o u s move-
ments, styles, f o r m s , and genres. M o s t of the
555 articles in P a r t I include bibliographies,
which, while selective, are standard and retro-
spective. T h e bio-bibliographies in P a r t s I I
and I I I are concise and represent only the
most pertinent facets of an author's c a r e e r
and w o r k . — K . L .
