Buck, dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, was drawn from the faculties of arts and sciences and of education and was directed not so much to make recommenda- tions for general education in Harvard Col- lege as to venture into the vast field of American educational experience in quest of a concept of general education that would have validity for a free society.
