P e o p l e i n t h e N e w sAnn-Christe Galloway A p p o i n t m e n t s Diane Dallis is now associate dean for plan- ning and administration with Indiana Uni- versity Libraries. Dallis had previously served as associate university librarian for research and instruction at the University of Chicago since May 2017. Holly Jeffcoat, associate dean of the Uni- versity of Connecticut (UConn) Library, has been named dean of Southern Methodist University Librar- ies. She will as- sume her new duties August 1, 2018. Previously at UConn, she served as the interim vice provost (the head UConn librarian), the assistant vice provost, and as the associate university librarian of planning, finance, and assess- ment. Prior to UConn, Jeffcoat held positions at the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences, as well as the UNM Health Scienc- es Library and Informatics Center. Her library leadership career began in Galápagos, Ecua- dor, as the director of the Charles Darwin Research Station. Jeffcoat has published and presented on translational science support, use of virtual reality in education, collection development in health sciences, and numer- ous scholarly communication topics. Jeffcoat is a founding creator of BLC Leads, a Boston- based leadership program for mid-career li- brarians, and serves as a program mentor. She is a 2018-19 fellow in the Association of Research Libraries Library Leadership Fel- lows program. Courtney L. Young, head librarian and professor of women’s studies at Penn State University-Allegheny, has been named university librarian at Colgate University. Young has served as a librarian within the Penn State system for nearly 16 years, first as a social sciences librarian and assistant professor of women’s studies at the Univer- sity Park campus, then as reference librarian and associate professor of women’s studies at Beaver campus in Monaca. During her ca- reer, she has also held positions in libraries at Michigan State University and The Ohio State University. The author and co-author of dozens of academic articles and book reviews, Young is a frequent presenter at conferences across the country and around the world. She speaks on issues of leader- ship; advocacy and diversity; mentorship; and the role of libraries in the life of an in- stitution, its students, and its faculty. Young was ALA president from 2014 to 2015 and currently chairs the organization’s Executive Director Search Committee. She is co-chair of the ACRL Keynotes Committee. At Penn State-Allegheny, she serves on the Honors Program Committee and is a past member of the Tenure and Promotion Committee. Young sits on the editorial boards of Collab- orative Librarianship; International Jour- nal of Information, Diversity & Inclusion; and The Political Librarian. The recipi- ent of numerous awards for distinguished service and achievement, Young is a past member of the alumni board at the College of Wooster. Kristin Buxton has accepted the position of science librarian at the University of Oregon Libraries. Meredith Knoff has been named learn- ing commons librarian in teaching and learning at the Indiana University Libraries. Austin Munsell has accepted the po- sition of collections manager for special collections and university archives at the University of Oregon Libraries. R e t i r e m e n t s Elizabeth (Beth) Dankert Hammond has retired after 40 years of service. She joined Mercer University in 1978 to serve as the head of circulation in the Stetson Library. In 1983, she was named user services li- brarian, where she coordinated the new instruction program, created the first refer- ence desk, and brought DIALOG searching to Mercer. In 1984, she was promoted to coordinator of reference and online ser- vices for the Stetson Library. From 1986 to 1987, she served as acting director of the Stetson Library. Named associate director and collection development librarian in 1987, Hammond was tasked with planning the shelving arrangement and physical move of the collection into the new 94,000 square foot library. From 1990 until 1998, she focused on collections as the head of collection development. Her second stint as acting director came in October 1998, when she was named interim director of the university libraries. She was named university librarian in July 1999 and dean in 2001. Hammond has enabled a legacy of collections and donations and spearheaded the renovation of the main floor of Tarver Library, completed in 2018. Lisa Mitten, social sciences editor at CHOICE for 18 years, has retired. Karen (Stanfield) Whisler has retired af- ter 46 years in the library profession. For the past 31 years, Whisler has served pa- trons at Eastern Illinois University’s Booth Library, first as a reference librarian and then as head of collection management. She began her career as an assistant librar- ian at McKendree College in Lebanon, Illi- nois, and then as catalog information desk librarian/science cataloger at Illinois State University in Normal. She was the physi- cal science cataloger and documents librar- ian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign prior to beginning her work at Booth Library in 1987. She was active in the Illinois Library Association, Illinois As- sociation of College and Research Librar- ies, Illinois Library Computer Systems Or- ganization, Illinois OCLC Users Group, and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois, serving on many com- mittees and advisory groups in the roles of chair, secretary, liaison, and newsletter editor.
