The goal o f this prize, the only B elgian distinction awarded by the King o f Belgium, is to further “the development o f higher education and scien­ tific research in Belgium.” It carries an award of 100,000 Euros ($125,000) and is the equivalent o f the Nobel Prize in the United States. Barbara J . Ford, distinguished professor and di­ rector of the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University o f Illinois Li­ brary at Urbana-Champaign, has been elected to the Standing Committee o f the University Libraries and Other General Research Libraries Section of the International Federation o f Library Associa­ tions and Institutions (IFLA) for 2003-07. Doris Helfer, chair of the Library Technical Ser­ vices Department at California State University- Northridge, was awarded the Rose L. Vormelker Award from the Special Libraries Association (SLA). This award is given in recognition o f spe­ cial librarianship in the area o f mentoring stu­ dents and/or practicing professionals in the field. She will receive the award later this year at the annual SLA Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Jo Kibbee, associate professor of library admin­ istration, head reference librarian at the Univer­ sity o f Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, has been named to the editorial board o f R eference Services Review, a quarterly journal dedicated to the enrichment o f reference knowledge and the ad­ vancement of reference services. Lum has worked for the library for more than 25 years; his accomplishments in­ clude assisting with 75th Anniversary Celebration o f Harvard-Yenching Library, contributing to the exhibition catalog Treαsures o f theY enching acting as curator for the exhibition “Portraits from China 1923-1946” for the Peabody Museum, and mount­ ing a third exhibition of East Asian ephemeral ma­ terials in the Pusey Library. Lum was also manager of a project to digitize the Hedda Morrison Photo­ graphs of China collection and is currently manag­ ing a project to digitize 1,000 photographs from the Pickens Collection on Chinese Muslim life. Judith Mayzel, professor o f library services at Oakton Community College in Des Plains, Illi­ nois, is the winner o f the North Suburban Library System Academic Library Staff Member o f the Year award for 2003. Jennifer Hain Teper, conservator for the Uni­ versity o f Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, has been named one of Library Jou rnals Movers and Shakers for 2004. This award identifies emerg­ ing leaders in the library world; each year it pro­ files 50 up-and-coming professionals in the United States and Canada who are innovative, creative, and making a difference in librarianship. Cates began her professional career as reference librarian at Harvard’s Lamont Library. She was founding director o f the Eugene Patterson Library at the Poynter Institute for Me­ dia Studies in St. Peters­ burg, Florida, and also saved as head of the Trans­ portation Library at North­ western University. Prior to joining the Columbia College Chicago library in Jo Cates the summer o f 2001, Cates spent four years as regional research m anager at Ernst & Y ou n g’s Center for Business Knowl­ edge. She is the author o f Jou rn a lism : A G uide to the R eferen ce Literature 2d ed. (Libraries Unlimited, 1997). T he first edition w as nam ed a b est referen ce b o o k by Library Jo u rn a l in 1990; the third edition will b e published by Li­ braries Unlimited/Greenwood Publishing Group later this year. She also has published numerous chapters, reviews, and articles, the most recent on the new Art o f the Library program at Columbia (American Libraries, July/August 2003). She cre­ ated and wrote the “acKnowledge Management” column in the Business &F inance Division Bulletin (1999-02). Cates is a m em ber o f ALA, ACRL, the Association for Education inJ ournalism and Mass Com­ munication, and the Special libraries Association. Thomas (Tom) M. Peischl was appointed dean of library services at Central Washington University last September, after spending ten years as chief information officer at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside (1998-03) and dean of academic informa­ tion services at N orthern M ichigan University (1994-98). His prior experience includes dean o f the library at Mankato State University (1 9 8 4 - 94), director o f college li­ braries (1979-84) and di­ rector of computer services ( 1 9 8 1 -8 4 ) at SUNY Col­ lege-Potsdam, and a vari­ ety o f library positions at University o f Northern Colorado (1 9 7 4 -7 9 ) and the University o f Denver Thomas M. Peischl (1 9 7 2 -7 4 ). Peischl is a renew ed m em ber o f ACRL, having previously served on many com ­ mittees from 1981 to 199 9 . He has also been active in the Library Administration and Man­ agem ent Association, the Council o f Univer­ sity o f Wisconsin Librarians Executive Committee (1998-2002), the Upper Peninsula Region o f Li­ brary Cooperation (1994—98), and MINITEX (1986-94). Peischl has given a number of presenta­ tions throughout the years and has been published in several publications. Carole C. Nagle is a distinguished mem­ b e r o f th e A cad em y o f H ealth In fo rm atio n Professionals, A cadem ic Library A ssociation, B eta Phi Mu (Library S cien ce H onorary Soci­ ety); served o n the editorial board o f M edical R eference Services Quarterly; and was editor of “Sci-Tech O nline” quarterly. She served as the principal investigator on several grants and was the author o f many articles on educational ini­ tiatives in the health sciences libraries. D e a t h s Thom as J . Galvin, 71, professor em eritus at the University at Albany-SUNY, has died. Galvin joined the University at Albany in 1989 to imple­ ment the school’s doctoral program in informa­ tion scien ce as its inaugural director. He also served as professor in the School o f Information Science and Policy until his retirement in 1999. Galvin served as ALA executive director from 1985 through 1989. From 1974 to 1985, he was dean o f the School o f Library and Information S cien ce at the University o f Pittsburgh. From 1962 to 1972, he held a series o f com bined fac­ ulty and administrative appointm ents at the Graduate Sch ool o f Library and Inform ation Science at Simmons College, culminating in his being named associate dean and professor. Galvin received many awards and honors, including the ALISE Award for Professional Contributions to Library and Inform ation Scien ces Education (1993), the Medical Library Association’s Eliot Prize for the most significant contribution to the literature o f m edical librarianship (1988), and the best information science book of the year by the American Society for Information Science (1979). In 1980 h e was appointed by the secre­ tary o f state to the U.S. National Commission on UNESCO. He was also the author, coauthor, or editor o f nearly 20 b o o k s and m ore than 100 published articles and reports. Toyo Suyemoto Kawakami, 87, retired head o f the Social Work Library and assistant head o f the Education/Psychology Library at Ohio State University (OSU), has died. Following the bomb­ ing o f Pearl Harbor, Kawakami and her family w ere interned at the Topaz Relocation Center, w here she served as school librarian. After she was released from Topaz in 1945, Kawakam i worked at the Cincinnati Museum as a reference librarian and later served approximately 13 years as referen c e librarian at the University o f Cincinnati’s College o f Nursing. She joined OSU in 1958 and served the libraries for 29 years. Her scholarly works include Acronyms in Education and the Behavioral Sciences, and her more recent liter­ ary work can be found in collections such as Last Witnesses: Reflections on the Wartime Interment o f Japanese Americansa nd Only What We Could Carry. The Japanese-A m erican Internment Experience. Kawakami is considered a leading poet and au­ thor o f the Nisei generation. ■ C&RL News ■ A p ril 2004 / 233
