ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries NEWS No. 6, June 1968 A C RL News Issue (B ) of College & Research Libraries, Vol. 29, No. 3 G e o r g e M. B a i l e y , executive secretary o f A C R L since November 1, 1963, has resigned from his position effective Au gust 31. The Board o f Directors o f AC RL, in its search for a successor to Mr. Bailey, requests the membership to submit names o f candidates to the President, with a copy to the Executive Secretary o f A C R L at A L A Headquarters. The description o f the position and qualifications are as follow s: D e s c r i p t i o n : The position o f Executive Secretary of the division is one o f high professional responsibility. It involves provision of staff service to the members to enable them to develop the divisional program; representation o f the division and of A L A to other associations, government officials, other professions, and the public at large; and provision o f consultant service to administrators and librarians of junior colleges, colleges, universities, and research institutions on the problems o f academic libraries. A great deal of travel, public speaking, and writing for publication is involved. Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s : Four years o f college plus an MS in LS degree. Appropriate experience and knowledge o f materials and activities re lated to academic libraries; ability to handle detail and to meet deadlines; to make public appearances; and to work cooperatively with a great variety of people. —James Humphry, III President, ACRL The Metropolitan Museum o f Art N ew York, New York 10028 G eorge Bailey has served with distinction in the position o f Executive Secretary o f the Association of College and Research Libraries, the largest division o f the American Library Association, for the past five years. W h en he came to us in 1963 he brought with him the benefit of his library experience at the Uni versity of California at Berkeley and Davis, and Northwestern University. G eorge has devoted himself to the cause of improving and helping libraries and librarianship in all the types of institutions the Association represents: junior colleges, colleges, universities, research and spe cial. Although the membership has increased by 65 per cent betw een 1963 and 1968, with the inevitable increase in the work load, by dint o f long hours and hard work, he has kept pace with it. His sense of professionalism, his ability to work with the members as well as his colleagues at headquarters— not to mention “ his” president!, are qualities which make him a model executive secretary. In his new position as librarian and professor at on e o f the municipally supported institutions of higher education in N ew York City— York College—G eorge, b y his AC R L experience in all its variety, as well as his previous service in libraries, is admirably equipped to develop a first-rate library. W e are all agreed that AC R L’s and A L A ’s loss is York’s gain. W e will miss G eorge in his present post, but w e’ll put him to work in the Association— in another capacity — when he assumes his new post. It is inevitable, and right, that G eorge should m ove on to an other important library position— w e wish him well in the new endeavor and at the same tim e vote him a rousing and unanimous round of thanks for a singularly outstanding job at ACRL. Speaking selfishly, I’m relieved that my term o f office expires b efore G eorge’s; speaking from experience, I’m pleased that D ave Kaser will have been president of ACRL 162 163 y for several weeks before G eorge leaves. To put it another way, working with G eorge in pur suing goals to which w e are all devoted, is a privilege and a pleasure.—James Humphry III. N o t e : See profile on pages 194-195. Cleary, project director, and Mrs. Ruth Allen, chief investigator, of the College of Education, University o f South Florida, Tampa, will report on “ The Effect o f a Librarian-Centered Reading Guidance Program on the Reading Skills and Habits of Elementary School Pupils.” Haynes McMullen, professor of library sci ence, graduate library school, Indiana Uni versity, Bloomington, will report on “ The Use o f a Computer in the Study o f American Li braries in Existence before 1876.” A computer was used for sorting data, performing simple arithmetic processes, and producing graphs as an aid in the study o f approximately 6800 libraries founded in the United States before 1876. The computer was used because it saved enormous amounts o f time in handling data and eliminated many clerical errors that would have resulted from non-computer meth ods. Marina E. Axeen, associate professor, de partment of library science, Ball State Univer sity, Muncie, Indiana, will report on “ Teach ing the Use o f the Library to Undergraduates; An Experimental Comparison o f Computer- Based Instruction and the Conventional L ec ture Method.” Tw o groups o f undergraduates were taught an introductory course in library science, one by a computerized program and the other b y the conventional lecture methods. Results o f the two methods were analyzed and compared. A doctoral dissertation at the University o f Illinois.
