ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 234 Personnel The best augury for success that a new university can have for future preeminence is the acquisition of a top-flight librarian. This is the achievement reached by Nova Uni versity in Fort Lauder dale, Florida. Robert J. Havlik, scientist, librarian, in formation specialist, and Lincoln scholar has been appointed director of libraries, beginning Sept. 1. Nova University, a private institution, Mr. Havlik opened this fall as a graduate school dedi cated to the advancement of learning in the present scientific age. W ith high hopes of be coming the MIT of the South, Nova will start its training program at the post-doctoral level. Plans call for construction of a $4 million li brary/information retrieval center in the near future. Bob, an expert in special libraries with spe cial competence in scientific library work, spent the summer as director of a study of special libraries for the National Advisory Commission on Libraries. His will be one of the reports to be made late this year by the Commission to th e President’s Committee on Libraries. Bob was for four years the research library specialist on the staff of the U.S. Office of Education’s Library Services Branch. He also served in special staff assignment as advisor on information storage and retrieval methods as well as acting specialist for college and uni versity libraries. During his tenure he was re sponsible for a study entitled Survey of Spe cial Libraries Serving State Governments. He was also the author of a regular column in Special Libraries. It was also during his stay in Washington that he most actively exhibited his interest in the circumstances of Lincoln’s assassination by serving two years as president of the local Abraham Lincoln Group. Profes sionally, he held several offices in the W ash ington, D.C. Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. Prior to joining the Office of Education, Bob Havlik spent seven years, until 1963, as tech nical librarian for the Linde division of Union Carbide. His library research activities there were concentrated in the field of cryogenics. At home Bob is often as hard at work on community, professional and personal interests as he is on duty. Besides collecting Lincolniana, Bob pursues a unique hobby of collecting old mechanical, cast-iron penny banks. These are used to entertain his frequent guests. Then there is his quite voluminous jazz and blues record collection which threatens to bankrupt him every time he moves. He is an ex-clarinet player. In Tonawanda, N.Y., while at Linde, the Junior Chamber of Commerce consumed his public affairs time. But professional inter ests dominate his life. He has been an ab stracter for Chemical Abstracts and a book reviewer for Library Journal, School Library Journal, CHOICE and for the American As sociation for the Advancement of Science in the fields of history of science, and Lincoln. After receiving a chemical engineering de gree from Illinois Tech he took his MSLS from the University of Illinois graduate library school in 1951. His first job was exchange librarian and instructor at Iowa State College. There he came under the personal influence of the em inent librarian, C. H. Brown. Next, he served as assistant reference librarian and instructor at Purdue University from 1953-1955. While Bob will help Nova University d e velop the considerable library resources it will need for its future instruction and research programs, he will receive in return the oppor tunity to practically develop his theories and skills in automated information transfer, de veloping Nova’s library/information retrieval center as a national model.—Paxton P. Price, Office o f Education. Andrew Johnson became librarian of the Lamar State College of Technology, Beaumont, Texas, on Sept. 1. A native of Beau mont, Dr. Johnson at tended Lamar Tech for two years in 1951- 52, and received the BA degree in history from the University of Texas. He earned the MA and PhD de grees from Indiana University, and for three years was asso Dr. Johnsonciate professor of his tory and government at Schreiner Institute, Kerryville, Texas, before joining the Lamar faculty in 1958. In the fall of 1965, Dr. Johnson took a year’s leave of ab sence from Lamar and earned a master’s de gree in library science at the University of Chicago while holding a post-doctoral fellow ship from the graduate library school and a scholarship from the Texas Library Association. While in Chicago, he was supervisor of, and 235 consultant to, the circulation department. Dr. Johnson’s interest in libraries dates from his high school days when he served as a page in the local public library, working later as a student assistant during his junior college days at Lamar Tech. American Historical Association, the Missis sippi Historical Association, AAUP, and Phi Alpha Theta claim Dr. Johnson as one of their members. In 1961-62 he was a Southern Fel lowship Foundation fellow. W ith a person of such rich background and with all his qualities of dynamic leadership the Lamar Tech library should make rapid strides in the years to come. —Julia Plummer, Lamar State College.
