The U niversity o f Pennsylvania's (UP) B iom ed ical Library received tw o gifts to ta llin g $132,000. U niversal H e a lth Services In c. gave $5 0 ,0 0 0 in h o n o r o f M a rtin M e y e rs o n , p re side nt em eritus o f U P a n d su p p o rte r o f the library, to m ark his retirem ent fro m the c o m p a n y ’s B o a rd a n d to s u p p o r t th e a c q u is itio n o f p rin t a n d electronic resources fo r m e d ic a l co lle ctions. T he H o w a rd H ug he s M e d ical Institu te (H H M I) gave $82,000 in the latest o f several im p o rta n t d o n a tio n s m a d e to re c o g n ize the lib rary ’s role in fu rth e rin g research carried o u t b y H H M I investigators. Like earlier gifts fro m the H u g h e s F o u n d a tio n , in c lu d in g $75,000 in 1997 a n d $63,000 in 1996, the m o n e y w ill s u p p o rt the pu rchase o f e lectro nic in fo rm a tio n resources, p h y sical reno vatio ns, a n d c o m p u tin g e q u ip m e n t. T he n e w c o lle c tio n consists o f 28 letters a n d 2 telegram s fro m M u rro w to H e rm in e D u th ie D ecker, w ritte n b etw e e n Septem ber 15,1930, a n d M ay 13,1932. D ecker w as te ach ing spe ech in Syracuse, N e w Y o rk , at the tim e M u rrow w as pre side nt o f the N atio n a l S tudent F e d eratio n in N e w Y o rk City. A letha C arlton, d aug h te r o f the late D ecker, d o n a te d these letters stating that they reveal “a n in tim ate re la tio n sh ip b etw e e n the tw o w ith o u t expressly m e n tio n in g any d etails” a n d th at they reveal a great d eal a b o u t M u rro w ’s intensive life, w o rk , a n d p e rso n al view s a b o u t lo ve, m arriage, a n d G o d . A rare 1473 edition o f St. Augustine's De C iv ita te D e i (C ity o f G o d ) has b e e n d o n a te d to M arquette U niversity (M U ) b y a lu m n i c o u p le F rank a n d Rose M ary M atusinec. W ritte n b y A u g u stin e in the 5th century, C ity o f G o d is considered o n e o f the m ost significant pieces o f C h ristian literature. This seco nd e d itio n w as p rin te d in Latin b y G u te n b e rg successor Peter Schoeffer a n d in clu d e s a separately p rin te d c o m m e n tary b y the O x fo rd D o m in ic a n s N ic o la s T revet a n d T ho m as W aleys.
