A comprehensive guide to the more than 2,000 prescription drugs on today’s market, the annual edition provides timely, unbiased, and prac tical information— including comparative evalua tions— on the clinical use o f each drug. Written for physicians and nurses, but useful to anyone with access to a good medical dictionary, each descrip tion gives the drug’s composition, actions, uses, adverse reactions and precautions, drug interac tions, dosage, and preparations. The 88 chapters are arranged by the type o f medical condition corrected by the drug, and each has an introduction detailing the latest therapeutic research. By con trast, Physician’s Desk Reference only includes the FDA-approved pharmaceutical company’s label ing for each drug, with no cross-references or listings o f comparable medications. Some o f the monuments featured are documented for the first time. T he author concludes that the causes for increased homelessness lie in the expansion o f global laissez-faire capitalism, with its competing class interests, social policy formations, and individual versus collective rights o f justice for all. W hether or not you agree with that perspective, the book willraise your awareness o f the scope o f the problem and the inability o f current social policies to address it. Copies may be ordered for $39.95 from Praeger Publishers, 88 Post Road West, Box 5007, Westport, C T 06881. High lights include a vendor’s perspective on bilingual library automation (John Richardson), C A 'N E T , the Canadian link to IN T E R N E T (Carole Moore), and two perspectives on Canadian interlibrary loan (D ebra Wallace and Leslie Morris). Morris, inci dentally, attributes the strong interlibrary coopera tion between western Canada and the western United States to East Canada’s hangups with what the Americans did to them in the W ar o f 1812— but wasn’t it the Brits who burned down the Library of Congress? Many o f the problems addressed are the same ones that North American librarians are trying to solve (the impact o f new technologies, access, management, performance measurement, library cooperation, space planning, standards), and it is very intriguing to see what measures the Australians are recommending their government take to help improve things. I t ’s filled with interest ing statistics, too. Copies are available for $16.95 from the Australian Government Publishing Ser vice, North American Operations, P.O. Box 7, Plan etarium Station, New York, NY 10024. Excellent commentary by veteran genre analyst Parish. A copy may be ordered for $51.95 postpaid from McFarland & Co., Box 611, Jefferson, NC 28640. IS B N 0-89950-563-5. • Ranganathan, Dewey and C . V. Raman: A Study in th e Arrogance o f Intellectual Power, by G irja Kumar (147 pages, 1991), is a comparative psychobiography o f librarians S. R. (“Five Laws”) Ranganathan and Melvil Dewey with physicist and Nobel laureate C. V. Raman. Kumar, president o f the Indian Library Association and form er librarian at Jawaharlal Nehru University, is one o f India’s leading library scholars. He considers all three men geniuses who shared certain characteristics o f indi vidualism, vision, eccentricity, and irritability. The book’s tone is lightly philosophial with acerbic edi torial commentary: “Ranganathan was like a banyan tree under which nothing seemed to grow.” No pricing information was provided with the review copy, so just send the publisher an order and hope for the best: Vikas Publishing House, 576 Masjid Road, Jangpura, New D elhi-110014, India. Another group o f October 1991 / 599 papers examines apartheid in health, education, and the mines, offering new insights into the actual experiences o f blacks forced to live in a repressive environment. A final group o f contributors looks at three dimensions o f political struggle in South Africa— class, race, and gender. First published in 1886, the first 15 chapters were censored by the Russian government because they contrasted the suffering o f the poor with the hypocrisy o f the fabulously wealthy. In some ways dated but in other ways tim e less, this book was acknowledged internationally as a seminal work o f socioeconomic theory. Perhaps it is best read in conjunction with Gimme Shelter‚ which is reviewed above. Copies are available for $13.95 from Seven Hills Book Distributors, 49 C en tral Ave., C in c in n a ti, O H 4 5 2 0 2 . IS B N 1-870098-33-1. ■ ■ Compiled by Sarah L. Shamley. In 1969 Longines- Wittnauer donated to the National Archives motion picture kinescopes of its television interview series Chronoscope, which was broadcast on CBS- affiliated television stations from 1951 to 1955. Chronoscope featured people in the news who could speak with authority on the issues of the day — Congressmen, diplomats, senators, statesmen, and national leaders in a variety of fields. This helpful guide now gives researchers greater access to this unique historical resource. It lists individual programs by broadcast date, identifies the guests and interviewers for each program, and outlines the main topics discussed. Also included is an index of topics and two appendixes, which list guests and interviewers. 0-911333-82-7 $25 cloth Guide to the Holdings o f the Still Picture Branch o f the National Archives ompiled by Barbara Lew is Burger. An intelligent introduction analyzing the portrayal of war in pictures in the last two centuries, enhances the value of this book for public and private collections in U.S. military history.” — Library Journal 0-911333-77-0 $25 cloth NATIONAL ARCHIVES PU BLICATIONS NEPS, D ep t.
