Lewis, a librarian in th e rare b o o k area at th e U niversity o f Illinois at U rbana- December 1 9 9 6 / 787 Remembering Jesse Ha uk Shera (1904– 1982) J e s s e H auk Shera, d e a n e m e r it u s o f th e Baxter School o f Informa­ tion an d Library Sciences, C ase W e s te rn R eserv e University, died March 8 [1982] in C leveland at th e age o f 78. Shera served as d ean o f the libraiy school from 1952 to 1970, an d estab­ lished the Center for Docum entation and Com­ m unication R esearch th ere in 1955. T ho ugh he w as partially blind from birth, h e w as an acknow ledged visionary w h o saw far into the future o f his profession. Shera’s career in libraiy w o rk b eg an in 1927 w h e n he b ecam e a n assistant to the li­ brarian at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The next year h e becam e bibliographer and research associate at the Scripps Foundation for Research in P opulation Problem s. In 1940 he w as n a m e d c h ie f o f th e census-library project at the Library o f C ongress to develop a collection in p o p u latio n and dem ography. T he next y ear he w as ap p o in ted d ep u ty chief o f th e Central Inform ation Division o f the Office of Strategic Services. H e left in 1944 to b eco m e associate librarian at the University o f Chicago. In 1947– 1952 h e w as associate p rofessor at th e University o f Chicago G radu­ ate Library School. After his retirem ent from Case W estern he served for o n e year as visiting professor at the G raduate Library School o f the University o f Texas, returning to Case as d ean a n d p ro ­ fessor em eritus in 1972. A m ong his in te rn a tio n a l h o n o rs , S hera served as international delegate to the UNESCO conferences o n Interna­ tional Bibliographic O r­ ganization a n d Biblio­ graphic O rganization in the Social Sciences in Paris in 1950. T he sam e year h e w as a delegate for the N ational Science F ound ation to an inter­ national conference on c l a s s i f i c a t i o n a t D orking, England. He Jesse Hauk Shera w as also a visiting lec­ turer at the Brazilian Institute for Bibliogra­ phy an d D ocum entation in Rio de Janeiro, at Bangalore, India, an d at the L ondon School of Librarianship. His aw ards have included the Kaula, a gold m edal from India, the D istinguished Alumnus A w ard from th e U niversity o f Chicago, the Melvil D ew ey A w ard from ALA, th e Librarian o f the Y ear Award from th e O h io Library As­ sociation, an d th e O hioana A w ard from the O hioana Foundation. After teaching fo r several years, she enrolled in th e UIUC Library School from w hich she re­ ceived h e r ad v an ced d eg ree in 1930. Susan Swartzburg, preservation librarian at Rutgers University, d ied in O cto b er follow ing a b rief illness after h e r return from th e IFLA conference in Beijing. She w as 58. Swartzburg joined Rutgers in 1972 as director o f the Alex­ a n d e r Library an d b ecam e preservation librar­ ian in 1982. She w as w ell k n o w n for h e r w ork to preserve library m aterials an d earn ed a re p u ­ tation as a prolific w riter an d passionate teacher.
