The aw ard is given for extraordinary ser­ v ice to th e p ro fe s s io n o f m usic librarianship over a short period of time (three to five years). Coral is a past- president o f MLA and cu r­ rently serves as a vice-president o f the Interna­ tional Association of Music Libraries, Archives, a n d D ocum entation Centres. She w as general editor for the revised edition o f the Interna­ tional Standard Bibliographic Description, and project editor of the ISO Standard 10957: Inter­ national Standard Music Number. Nancy M. Cline, d ean o f University Libraries at Penn State University, began her term as vice- president/president-elect o f the Association o f Re­ search Libraries (ARL) at the first 1995 m eeting of the ARL Board of Direc­ tors in February. Cline has long b een active in ARL, serving as chair of the Task Force on Tele­ c o m m u n ic a t io n s , as ARL’s representative to the Steering Committee N ancy M. C line o f the Coalition for Net­ w orked Information, on the Task Force on Gov­ ernm ent Information, and on the Information Policy Committee. K athryn Luther H enderson, professor in the G raduate School o f Library an d Inform ation Science at the University o f Illinois at Urbana- C ham paign CUIUC), received the 1995 Asso­ ciation for Library and Information Science Edu­ cation (ALISE) Teaching Excellence in Library and Inform ation Science Education Award at the ALISE annual m eeting in Philadelphia in February. The aw ard recognizes evidence of regular an d sustained excellence in teaching; contributions to curriculum design w hich dem ­ o n stra te su b ject ex p ertise and the ability to integrate n e w d e v e lo p m e n ts ; e v i­ d ence o f m entoring to stu­ dents, alumni, and profes­ sio n als o u ts id e th e class­ room; and the use o f effec­ tive and innovative teaching m ethods. In 1991 H ender­ son w on the UIUC Campus A w ard fo r E x c e lle n c e in G raduate an d Professional T eaching. In 1993 she re­ ceived the UIUC G raduate School of Library and Infor­ m ation Science D istinguished Alumnus Award, and th e ALA/Beta Phi Mu Award for contribu­ tions to library and information science educa­ tion. She has b een a m em ber o f the UIUC fac­ ulty since 1965. Edw ard K o m ara an d G eorgin a B in n s re­ ceived th e W alter G erb o th A ward from the Music Library Association at its annual m eeting in February. The aw ard is presented to music librarians in the first five years o f their profes­ sional careers to support research projects in progress. Komara is music librarian and blues archivist at the University o f Mississippi at O x­ ford. A $600 aw ard will help fund his travel to several jazz and record com pany archives in o rd er to com plete his publication o f Charlie P atton’s 1930 P aram ount Record Session, a com prehensive catalog o f recording sessions by Charlie Patton an d other blues artists. Binns is music librarian at M onash Univer­ sity in M elbourne, Australia. H enry Latzke, director o f library and media services at Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, received LIBRAS’ Melvin A. G eorge Award given for outstanding contributions to cooperative librarianship. LIBRAS is a consor­ tium o f 18 private academ ic libraries in the N ortheastern Illinois area. She is the author o f FederalJudges a n d Justices, a n im portant le­ gal reference book. Deaths Jo n a th a n R. B row n , assistant business and engineering librarian at D artm outh C ollege’s Feldberg Library, died March 13 at his h o m e in W oodstock, Vermont. H e w as 43 years old. A graduate o f D artm outh, Brow n received his MLS from Simmons College in 1977. Before joining th e Feldberg Library staff, h e held various p o ­ sitions at D artm outh’s B aker Memorial Library a n d Kresge Physical Sciences Library. V irginia C olley B u rn s, a retired V anderbilt University librarian, died in April at th e age o f 95. B urns retired form the Catalog D epartm ent a t V a n d e rb ilt in 1969. She h a d p re v io u sly w o rk ed at tw o o th er college libraries. She w as the sister of late G rand O le O pry leg en d Minnie Pearl, a n d w o rk ed as o n e o f her script writers in th e early days o f Pearl’s career. Susan C. George, physical sciences librarian at D artm outh C ollege’s K resge Library, d ied March 13 at the age o f 51. G eorge received her B.A. in biology from the College o f Notre Dame in Maryland, an d h e r MLS from San Jose State University. She joined D artm outh in 1983. Be­ fore th at she served in research positions at Jo h n s H opkins University and Stanford Univer­ sity, a n d as a librarian at C hevron Research C om pany in California. Gary R ossi, audiovisual cataloger an d h ead o f the A udiovisual Cataloging Section at th e Uni­ versity of California, Irvine (UCI), died suddenly last January. A graduate o f SUNY Buffalo, Rossi received his MLS from SUNY G en eseo and his m aster’s in French from M iddlebury College. H e spent 16 years at Mansfield University serv­ ing as hum anities librarian, audiovisual cata­ loger, an d autom ation librarian. H e joined UCI in 1991. E llen B a k er W ells, head of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries Special Collections D epart­ m ent since 1979, died o f cancer on April 2. She w as 60 years old. Wells also served as the Li­ braries’ exhibition officer since 1990, an d for­ m ulated the policies that govern th e Libraries’ m ost valuable collections. She supervised the Libraries’ D ibner Library o f th e History o f Sci­ en ce an d Technology, an d curated a n u m b er o f exhibitions for the Libraries’ Gallery in the National M useum o f A m erican History. Before joining th e Sm ithsonian, Wells served at the National Library o f Medicine, the O sier Library o f the H istory o f M edicine at McGill University, an d Cornell University Library as associate li­ brarian in th e history o f science collections.
