Visitors to the ACRL T hird N ational Conference will not only have the opportunity to attend an exciting confer­ ence, b u t will see Seattle at its loveliest. Those who live in cold, snowy climates will especially appreci­ ate the fresh green, m ild clim ate, blue w ater, and variety of color th a t characterizes Seattle in April. T em peratures in Seattle in the spring can vary a great deal, even in one day. A cool, rainy m orning m ay be w arm and sunny by noon, and cool in the evening. Most Seattlites are m asters at layered dressing, a practice visitors m ay w an t to adopt to rem ain com fortable throughout their stay. An u m ­ brella is an essential layer on a spring day. Plan for tem peratures ranging from 40-70 degrees in a day. Since the boat trip to K iana is in the evening, the ride back will be cold, unless one stays inside the boat. Anyone planning to go out on deck to w atch the skyline on the retu rn trip should be w arm ly dressed. The arrival point for m any conference attendees will be the H enry M. Jackson International A irport (SeaTac). The G rayline dow ntow n airporter buses provide service betw een th e a irp o rt and m ajor d o w n to w n hotels, in c lu d in g th e S h erato n , th e C row n Plaza, the Four Seasons O lym pic, and the W estin Hotels. These buses leave from the baggage claim level of the m ain term inal at the airport. T he A irporter buses d e p a rt every 30 m inutes from 6:10 a.m . to 12:30 a.m . Using the special dis­ count coupon reprinted on p. 133 of this issue, con­ ference attendees will receive a $4.00 rate for the A irporter. Anyone staying at the YMCA or the P a­ cific Plaza will need to get off of the A irporter at the F our Seasons Olympic; those staying at the Vance or the M ayflower Park should get off at the W estin. After checking into the hotel, the next step will be to get to the Seattle C enter to register. T he M on­ orail is the fastest and easiest w ay to get to the Seat­ tle C en ter from d o w ntow n. T he M onorail runs every 15 m inutes. The ninety second ride costs 50c; Ferry to Kiana Shuttle buses will be available to take con­ ferees to and from the Sheraton and the ferry pier, Pier 56 on the accom panying m ap. B oard­ ing tim e for the buses leaving the Sheraton to the pier will be 4:45 p.m . on Friday, April 6. Ferries will leave prom ptly at 5:45. For those who wish to w alk dow n to the pier, it is located betw een University and Seneca Streets, about a 20-m inute walk from the Sheraton. The retu rn trip will be signaled by the ferries’ whistles, the first one leaving at 10:00 p.m . Buses will be at Pier 56 for th e retu rn trip to the Sheraton. a cashier will m ake change if needed. The dow n­ tow n m onorail term inal is a short w alk from the Sheraton and other conference hotels. Check the m ap of dow ntow n Seattle published in this issue for the exact locations. Registration at the Seattle C en­ ter O pera House will open at 9:00 a.m . on W ednes­ day, April 4. Another easy w ay to get around in Seattle is to ta k e th e bus. T h e M etro T ra n s it system has a “Magic C a rp e t” or Free Ride zone around dow n­ tow n w here all of the buses are free. O utside of the free ride zone, w ithin the city limits, fares are 60
