libraries. Sen. Pressler defined "entities providing not-for-profit biblio­
graphic services" as library services provided by public, academic, school, 
and medical libraries and cooperative library networks as defined by several 
federal statutes.

Although the Senate did not get a chance to consider the amendment, it 
services to focus congressional attention on library uses of telecommunica­
tions and the increased costs libraries face from access charges and pending 
tariffs. Sen. Pressler intends to pursue the issue on another vehicle, if 
possible.

George was president of the Illinois L ib rary  As­
sociation in 1976-77 and chair of the Illinois Asso­
ciation of College and Research L ibraries in 1973. 
He has also been a m em ber of the Board of D irec­
tors of the Illinois Regional L ibrary Council, chair 
of the L ib rary  Advisory C om m ittee to the Illinois 
Board of H igher E ducation, and since 1979 has 
served as a m em ber of the IL L IN E T  O C L C  Steer­
ing C om m ittee.

He is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences, 
has been consultant on num erous library building

m ent. His articles have been published in Catholic 
Library W orld and H ospital Libraries. He is a con­

by th e University of Illinois in 1973.

Mary Ann Griffin has been appointed director

Charlene Renner has been appointed associate 
director of libraries for bibliographic control at the 
University of W ashington, Seattle, effective M arch 
1. She comes to W ashington from Iow a State U ni­

technical services. Prior to w orking at Iow a State, 
R enner held severaFpositions at th e University of 
Illinois, U rb an a, including assistant director for 
central processing service, acting head of biblio­

M aintenance.

R enner holds bachelor’s and m aster’s degrees in

Patricia C. Sharp has been nam ed lib rarian  of

Beach. She has been involved in developing li­
braries in Palm  Beach C ounty for over 15 years.

Sharp received her bachelor’s degree from  M ich­
igan State University and her MLS from  the U ni­
versity of South Florida.

A C R L ’s A nthropology and Sociology Section 
recently conducted a survey of its m em bers. 
T he questionnaire was designed to determ ine 
the educational background of section m em ­
bers, a com posite of m em bers’ responsibilities, 
and guidelines for fu tu re directions th a t the sec­
tion m ight take. O ut of the 142 respondents, 
94% have library science degrees, w hile 58% 
have a d d itio n a l higher degrees (m aster’s or 
P h .D .), largely in social science disciplines. 
Professional responsibilities for most m em bers 
in c lu d e  re fe re n c e , o n lin e se a rc h in g , b ib lio ­
graphic instruction, collection developm ent, 
and faculty liaison work.

T he m em bership indicated several directions 
th e y  w ish th e  section to ta k e. P u b lic a tio n s 
ab o u t an th ro p o lo g y  an d  sociology lite ra tu re  
ranked highest, along w ith the developm ent of 
program s at ALA meetings. C o n tact w ith p u b ­
lish ers of v a rio u s re fe re n c e  tools w as also 
deem ed im p o rtan t.

The results of the survey w ere reported to the 
ANSS Executive C om m ittee at their M idw inter 
m eeting. It was noted th a t the cu rren t efforts of 
section com m ittees are very m uch in keeping 
w ith  th e  p r io r i tie s  ex p re sse d  by ANSS

Rosemary Neiswender has retired as cataloger 
at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Michael Palij retired D ecem ber 30 from his po­
sition as Slavic cataloger at the University of K an­
sas, Law rence.

Rosemary Williams will retire this sum m er as 
educational resources librarian at Ball State U ni­
versity, Muncie, Indiana, after 23 years of service.

John Zimmerman retired on D ecem ber 31 after 
26 years as D irector of Frostburg State College L i­
brary, M aryland. He was form erly acquisitions li­
b rarian  at the University of Georgia. Z im m erm an 
served as president of the M aryland L ibrary Associ­
ation in 1965-1966, president of the Board of D i­
rectors for the M iddle A tlantic Regional L ibrary 
Federation in 1968-1974, and executive director of 
the M aryland Congress of Academic L ibrary D i­
rectors in 1979-1981. He will continue as chairm an 
of the Advisory C om m ittee to the M aryland State 
L ibrary Resource Center.

LAMA PRECONFERENCE 
ON LIBRARY BUILDINGS

T he B uilding and E q u ip m en t Section of the 
ALA L ibrary A dm inistration and M anagem ent As­
sociation is holding a 2-day preconference on p la n ­
ning library buildings in Dallas on June 20-22, 
1984. The preconference, entitled “Planning L i­
brary Buildings: From  Decision to D esign,” is co­
sponsored by ACRL.

The program  will be directed at individuals w ith 
lim ited or no exposure to building planning activi­
ties, but it m ay also serve as a refresher for those 
w ithout recent experience. It will include individ­
ual and panel presentations by experienced library 
b u ild in g  an d  p la n n in g  professionals in c lu d in g  
R aym ond H olt, F razer Poole, R ichard W aters, 
D av id  K aser, an d  others. LAMA also plan s a 
behind-the-scenes tour of the new $42.7 million, 
650,000 square foot Dallas Public L ibrary.

The preconference is dedicated to Keyes D. M et­
calf, a m ajor contributor to excellence in academ ic 
library building planning, who died last Novem­
ber.

Registration is lim ited to 200 participants. The 
fee, w hich includes a banquet reception, is $100 for 
LAMA or ACRL m em bers, $125 for other ALA 
m em bers, and $150 for non-ALA members. D ead­
line for registration is June 8. No refunds will be 
given after June 15. Space perm itting, on-site regis­

W illiam  Yount, reference lib ra ria n  at the 
T rinity Evangelical D ivinity School, Deerfield, 
Illinois, has w ritten w ith inform ation on statis­
tical sources for theological libraries. The Asso­
ciation of Theological Schools publishes an an ­
nual D irectory, w hich contains inform ation 
about the size of m em ber library collections, 
and an annual Fact Book on Theological E d u ­
cation, w hich contains d ata on library staff, 
staff com pensation, etc. These publications are 
available from the Association of Theological 
Schools, P.O . Box 130, V andalia, OH 45377.

Many of you have seen in recent issues of the 
Chronicle o f Higher Education advertisements 
for the C hronicle D ata Service in Boulder, Col­
orado. According to John M inter, director of 
this com pany, C hronicle D a ta  Service will not 
be collecting any d ata themselves b u t will make 
available statistics collected by other agencies.

Also, the ALA Office for Research has p u b ­
lished Sources o f Library Statistics, 1972-1982, 
by M ary Jo Lynch (48 pages, 1983). The chap­
ter th a t describes college and university library 
statistics supplem ents the list th a t appeared in 
C & R L  N ew s, Ju ly /A ugust 1983, w h ile th e  
other chapters on public, school, special, and 
foreign library statistics are also of interest. It is 
available from  ALA Publishing at a cost of
