M ost academ ies are involved p rin cip ally w ith th e scien ces, b u t m any h a v e h u m a n itie s a n d social sc ie n c e in te re s t groups, if not separate sections. At least two academ ies, those of Michigan and Ohio, already have library science sections. M any s ta te a n d lo cal a c a d e m ie s w o u ld probably welcome overtures to form separate sections for librarians; such sections provide a way for librarians to deliver papers and in te r act w ith colleagues w ith o u t in c u rrin g long distance travel expenses. The ex p erien ce in Michigan during th e last th ree years since we formed our section is that many librarians are em boldened to a tten d and deliver papers b e cause of th e frien d ly local atm o sp h ere; our m eetings have becom e a focal point for librar ians’ intellectual interaction. It is also possible to interact with other sec tions of the academies, in various ways. Pa pers may be delivered to o th er sections, and published in th e academy journal or new slet ter. O ne could, for instance, do a joint p re sentation with a biology professor on a library in structio n p ro ject, and d issem inate th e in form ation to th e re st of th e academ y a fte r w ards th ro u g h p u b lic a tio n . O ne could also m ount open forums on instruction, or on new developm ents in academ ic libraries as these affect research scholars. O pportunities for in volvem ent in local academ ies are various, and available to any enterprising librarian willing to take an in terest and make a com m itm ent.
