The V irg in ia  C o m m o n w e a lth  U n iv e rs ity
(VCU) Libraries receiv ed  tw o  grants o f $10,000 
each from VCU’s Athletics D epartm ent an d  the 
School o f Medicine. The grant from the Athletics 
Department will assist in extending library hours. 
The grant from the School of M edicine will su p ­
port autom ation an d  access to  inform ation.

Acquisitions
The p a p e rs  o f Rev. John L  S. H o llo m a n
have b e e n  a cq u ired  b y  the D is tr ic t o f  C o lu m ­
b ia  P u b lic  L ibrary’s W ashington D.C. C om ­
m unity Archives. H ollom an, a native o f H ertford 
County, N orth C arolina, m o v e d  to  W ashington 
w ith his w ife in 1917 w h e n  h e  su c c e e d e d  Wil­
liam B ishop Jo h n s o n  in  th e  p asto rate o f th e 
Second B aptist C hurch. H ollo m an  a n d  his w ife 
w ere active in th e W ashington African-Ameri­
can com m unity a n d  various B aptist a n d  R epub­
lican organizations.

A  collection o f th e  m ost im p o rta n t p u b li­
cations o f W ilhelm  W undt, th e  fath er o f e x ­
perim ental psychology, h a s b e e n  a cq u ired  by 
the Archives o f th e H istory o f A m erican Psy­
chology at th e  U n iv e r s ity  o f  A k ron . W undt 
played a m ajor role in convincing early p sy ­
ch o lo g ists th a t o b je c tiv e  scien tific m e th o d s  
could b e  a p p lie d  to  th e stu d y  o f th e  m ind. T he 
acquisition, v a lu e d  at $13,000, com prises 10.5 
feet o f b o o k s a n d  is h o u s e d  in th e rare b o o k  
room  o f B ierce Library.

E a r th q u a k e s  a n d  e a r t h q u a k e  e n g i­
neering are th e  topics o f 5,800 slides a n d  10,000 
p h o to g r a p h s  d o n a te d  b y  p r o f e s s o r  K arl V. 
Steinbrugge to  th e  U n iv e r s ity  o f  C a lifo rn ia , 
B e r k e le y ’s , E arthquake E ngineering R esearch 
C enter Library. T he slides will b e  digitized an d  
th e textual descriptions e n te re d  into a n  a u to ­
m ated  slide retrieval system  will allow  for re­
trieval o n  th e  e a rth q u a k e , lo c a tio n , ty p e  o f 
building, n a tu re  o f dam age, a n d  o th e r infor­
m atio n  d e p ic te d  in th e  im age.

b y  th e  U n iv e r s ity  o f  N ev a d a  at R e n o . T he

1,400 p ostcards, p ro d u c e d  b e tw e e n  1906 an d  
1980, dep ict Reno an d  the surrounding area, docu­
m ent changes in the Truckee Meadows during this 
century, and provide evidence o f the various im­
ages the area has presented over time—gambling 
mecca, divorce center, college town, wild w est town, 
o r staid and prosperous community.

A m erica’s first w o m a n  p o et, A nne B radstreet, 
b ecam e th e four-m illionth v o lu m e acq u ired  by 
the library at th e  U n iv e r s ity  o f  N o r th  C aro­
li n a  a t C h a p e l H ill. T h e sm all, h a n d -s iz e d  
v o lu m e en titled  Several P oem s C om piled w ith 
Great Variety o f  W it a n d  Learning, w a s p u b ­
li s h e d  in  B o s to n  in  1678, six  y e a r s  a fte r 
B radstreet’s d eath . T h e b o o k , d o n a te d  b y  the 
H anes F oundation, w a s p re s e n te d  in  h o n o r o f 
am es F. G ovan at a re c e p tio n  m arking his re ­

tirem en t after 19 years as university librarian. 
Several Poems, w hich includes B radstreet’s m ost 
fa m o u s p o e m , “C o n te m p la tio n s ,” is a n  e x ­
p a n d e d  v e r s io n  o f  T he T en th  M use, L ately 
S prung Up in  A m erica, a less rare v o lu m e p u b ­
lished in E ngland in 1650.

The U n iv e rs ity  o f V ir g in ia 's  Clifton
W aller Barrett Library o f A m erican Literature has 
a c q u ire d  a n  a u to g ra p h  m a n u s c rip t b y  M ark 
T w ain (ca. 1889), w ith  m an y  revisions an d  d e ­
letions, attack in g  th e  te a c h in g  o f relig io n  at 
G irard C ollege in P hiladelphia. T h e library also 
a cq u ired  an  au to g ra p h  m an u scrip t (ca. 1835) 
o f W ashington Irving’s Astoria, a n d  a ty p ed  film 
script for P eter V iertel’s 1956 sc re e n  a d ap ta tio n  
o f E rnest H em ingw ay’s novel The S u n  Also Rises 
w ith  ex te n s iv e  h a n d w ritte n  a n n o ta tio n s an d  
co m m en ts b y  H em ingw ay.
