A s far as this w riter has been able to determ ine, no inventory has ever been compiled of academic library buildings constructed in the United States in the nineteenth century. For purposes of preparing a m onograph on the evolution of the American academic library build­ ing, as complete a list as possible is now needed of such buildings constructed in the nation before the tu rn of the century. The prelim inary checklist be­ low enum erates all th a t have thus far been identi­ fied. Readers are invited to report others th a t are know n to th em . O nly free-stan d in g buildings erected w ith the intention th a t they would be used solely or prim arily for library purposes will be in­ cluded on the final list.
