ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 510 /C& RL News Internet resources for psychology By Paul Fehrm ann Learn how to take advantage o f the options offered by Internet U sers learn on a daily basis that the dyna mism of the Internet can challenge efforts to find information, even as it provides expand ing fruitful options. As noted in the April 1993 issue of C&RL News, however, working lists of resources related to particular subject areas have b e e n view ed as potentially helpful for those using the Internet. The list below aims to give a beginning set of sources that can be used by researchers and students in psychology. If readers are aware of other G opher (WAIS or W orld Wide W eb) resources for psychol ogy, please contact me at PFEHRMAN@KENT VM.KENT.EDU. A standard procedure for subscribing to both electronic journals and to electronic conferences (lists) is given below. These steps w ork for all conferences and journals noted here. Subscrip tion procedures may vary, however, and direc tories can help (e.g., The Directory o f Electronic Journals, Newsletters a n d A cadem ic Discussion Lists, published by the Association of Research Libraries, 1993; or, for an electronic version of that directory containing psychology confer ences, ftp to KSUVXA.KENT.EDU, and get the file ACADLIST.FILE4 in the LIBRARY directory). Users w h o have G opher (and TCP/IP) soft w are running on their personal com puters (or local m ainframes) can type in the addresses given below in order to “G opher to ” listed re sources. The G opher software has been freely available; but alternate (though limited) access to G opher resources has also been available by telnetting to “public” sites (preferably at night o r e a r l y m o r n in g ) ; t e l n e t to CONSUL TANT.MICRO.UMN.EDU, or telnet to UX1.C SO.UIUC.EDU (login at both sites as gopher). Accessing Gopher resources listed below at such “public” sites might involve “brow sing” to con nect to them (e.g., use public G opher to find s o f t w a r e r e v ie w s b y f in d in g SUNY at Plattsburgh directory under New York under USA under North America in the list of all Go phers, and then choose SUNY Plattsburgh In form ation and finally COMPSYCH). Addition ally, Veronica, the index to G opher which has b e e n under “Other G opher . . . Servers” at p u b lic sites has been useful for boolean keyword searches of and connection to G opher’s m enu resources (again, use of this resource during “off ho u rs” can be m ore productive). OPACs Internet OPACs for areas in psychology might b e identified using publications such as APA ’s Guide to Graduate Study in Psychology or the list o f APA programs found each year in the A m erican Psychologist. OPAC access informa tion is on most G ophers (e.g., G opher to Yale’s at YALEINFO.YALE.EDU 7000 for keyw ord searches using the “search libraries.CA” choice; or telnet to ACCESS.USASK.CA and login as HYTELNET for HYTELNET. Two other OPACs are those of the Library of Congress (telnet to LOCIS.LOC.GOV) and the National Library of M edicine (telnet to LOCATOR.NLM.NIH.GOV; login as LOCATOR). The Library of Congress is also making resources available via the Go pher; G opher to MARVEL.LOC.GOV 70. Electronic serials The three journals below are p eer reviewed. We will hold another Library Media Fair as soon as w e can allocate enough librarian time to organize and staff it. The only trouble is, just as w e ’ve been flooded with users anxious to learn how to dial in and search, w e ’ve had m assive retirem ents and a freeze has been placed on vacant positions. The squeeze be tw een increased user needs and decreased personnel is on. W h a t next? So our next step will be to maximize librarian time and effort—w e ’re concentrating on our publications’ program and investing in more sophisticated desktop publishing equipm ent. O ur reasoning is that if w e take the time to produce an eye-catching guide once, it will be used hundreds of times (and will be available even w hen a librarian isn’t). That single media fair made so many users aware of our services that w e ’re still following up with passw ords and answering incoming phone calls nearly a year later. As a means of marketing the library in its most positive light, w e highly recom mend the fair format. ■ CIC.NET STIS.NSF.GOV INFO.ACS.UNC.EDU BARYON.HAWK.PLATTSBURGH.EDU gopher://GOPHER.STOLAF.EDU mailto:MAILBASE@MAILBASE.AC.UK HAR1.HUJI.AC.IL gopher://GOPHER.CIC.NET
