PADG meetings at ALA conferences provide a forum for discus­ sion o f current issues in li­ brary preservation manage­ m e n t a n d fo r s h a r in g information. They have b e­ com e the one ALA meeting that most PARS members attend. This listserv is designed to con­ tinue the discussion and connection betw een meetings. Participation is open to any interested person; attendance at PADG meetings is not required. NEH W e b site u p d a te The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has a W eb site that provides help to potential grantees. It contains information about the types o f projects NEH funds, guidelines, application forms, deadline information, fre­ quently asked questions, and advice on grants administration. On a related W eb page, the Di­ vision o f Preservation and Access (DPA) has extensive additional information about its grant process. O f particular interest this year is the instruction to limit application narratives to 25 pages. The application deadline is July 1. Y a le publishes in terim re p o rt on social science d a ta project Yale University has published a report describ ing the first half o f its one-year project to mi­ grate machine-readable pub­ lic o p in io n research data from the Roper Collection. Over the past 20 years, Yale has co p ied the data from one form o f digital storage to another, but now the data must be restructured so they can be used on new hard­ w a re an d so ftw a re p la t­ form s. Y a le in v e stig a te d m any p o s s ib le m igration strategies for IBM PC, UNIX, and m ainfram e te c h n o lo ­ gies. NEDCC holds scanning conference The Northeast D ocum ent Conservation Center (NEDCC) will hold “School for Scanning: Pres ervation and Access in a Digital World” in B er­ keley, California, May 12– 14, 1997. Designed for novices in digital conversion, the confer­ ence will cover the basics o f technology, tech­ nical jargon, file formats, content selection, le­ gal issues, text and image scanning, quality control, costs, metadata, and CD-ROM or World W ide W eb applications. The faculty includes many well known experts from the University o f California-Berkeley, the Getty Information Institute, the Research Libraries Group, the Na tional Archives and Records Administration, Harvard University, the National Park Service, the Image Perm anence Institute and the Library o f Congress. This conference has been held previously in Boston and Washington, D.C., but given the fast pace o f developments in digital technology, each conference significantly up­ dates the content o f the previous one. Confer­ en ce registration costs $245, including lunches. Participation is limited and offered on a first- com e, first-served basis. The deadline to regis ter is April 27, 1997.
