The award o f $ 2 ,5 0 0 w ill e n a b l e Bucknum to begin com pil­ ing a com prehensive bibli­ ography for scholars and stu­ dents o f ethnom usicology in an expanded edition o f the 1992 publication Ethnomusicology Research: A Select Annotated Bibliography. Linda Di Biase, collection developm ent librar­ ian at the University o f Washington, has been elected executive director o f the Pacific North- west Canadian Studies Consortium (PNWCSC), which is comprised o f 20 colleges and univer­ sities in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Or egon, and Washington and engages in a vari­ ety o f ventures relating to Canadian studies. Di Biase has been on the PNWCSC since 1989 as library representative and has taken the lead on many cooperative activities. D eborah Grimes, director o f library services at Shelton State Community College, has been awarded a $250 research grant from the Ala­ bama Library Association’s College, University, and Special Libraries Division. The grant will help offset the costs o f publishing Centrality a n d the A cadem ic Library with ACRL. Sharon J . Rogers, associate vice-president for academ ic affairs at G eorge Washington Univer­ sity (G W U ), has b e e n e l e c t e d c h a ir o f th e OCLC Board o f Trustees. R ogers has previou sly served at GWU as assis­ tant v ice-p resid en t for academic affairs and uni­ versity librarian at the Gelman Library. Flint Purdy Memorial Award. Ruffner, who has b een with WSU for 32 years and joined the library system in 1978, was honored for his commitment to excellent service and his out­ standing management o f the University Librar­ ies’ collections. He is known as a generous men­ to r w h o is a lw a y s w illin g to s h a r e h is knowledge. Elizabeth V ernon, Judaica technical services librarian in the Ju d aica Division o f Harvard University’s W idener Library, has been chosen to receive the 1995– 96 Carol Ishimoto Award for Distinguished Service in the College Library, which includes a $1,000 stipend. Nancy Cline, Roy E. Larsen librarian o f Harvard College, said, “Elizabeth has produced a very useful analysis o f the W id ener co lle ctio n s that have b een moved to the Harvard Depository. Her work will be an asset to our ongoing review o f the com plex relationships that exist within our li­ brary collections.” Nancy W hitten Zinn, head o f special co llec­ tions e merita at the University o f California, San Francisco, received the Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group Award for Pro­ fessional Excellence. She was recognized for her work in the history o f health sciences, in­ cluding leadership roles in the collection and development o f health-related oral history and archives. Ken Kem pcke has been appointed refer­ e n c e librarian at M ontana State University- Remembering Guy Redvers Lyle (1907-1994) G u y R e d ­ vers Lyle, for­ mer director of libraries at Em­ ory University until his retirement in 1972, died July 20 at the age o f 87. Lyle had a long and distinguished career in librarianship, serving as head o f the library at Antioch College; associ­ ate in library econom y at the Uni­ versity o f Illinois; librarian o f the Guy Redvers Lyle W om an’s College o f the University o f North Carolina, G reensboro; and director o f libraries at Louisiana State Uni­ versity. He joined Emory University in 1954. Active in professional orga­ nizations, Lyle served on ACRL’s board (1950-53) and as president o f ACRL (1954-55). He was the au­ thor o f many articles and essays, and the books Classified List o f Pe­ riod icals f o r the College Library (1 9 3 4 ), College Library Publicity (1935), and The Administration o f the College Library (1944). Services 274 R etirem en ts Bill McClellan recently retired after more than 30 years o f service as music librarian at the University o f Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jo a n McConkey recently retired as associate director for administrative services at the Uni­ versity o f Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Bernice MacDonald recently retired from the New York Public Library after a 44-year career, the last 20 years as deputy director of the branch libraries and the last six months as acting di­ rector. MacDonald joined NYPL in 1952 first working with the Bronx Bookm obile and later with the Reader’s Advisory Service. She also served as coordinator o f adult services where she established a number o f programs includ­ ing the Early Childhood Project and the Con­ necting Libraries and Schools Project. D eaths Richard H enry Lodgson, professor o f library science at Queens College from 1971 until his retirement in 1974, died in February at the age o f 84. Lodgson also served as associate direc­ tor o f libraries at Columbia University from 1947 to 1953, director o f libraries at Columbia from 1953 to 1969, and dean o f university libraries at the City University of New York from 1969 to 1971. He also served at Alamosa State Teach­ ers College, Madison College, the University of Kentucky, the U.S. Office o f Education, and the U.S. Veterans Administration Library. A mem­ ber o f ALA, Lodgson also served as director and chairman o f the Association o f Research Libraries (1962– 65) and president o f the New York State Library Association (1965). Gary Meadors, cataloging librarian at the Uni­ versity o f Texas at Austin, died in December.
