Arnold, collection development librarian for Auburn University at Mont­ gomery, Alabama, was pre­ sented the Blackwell North America Research Award for her paper “Approval Slips and Faculty Participation in Book Selection.” The award is funded by Blackwell and presented annually by the College, University, and Spe­ cial Libraries Division o f the Alabama Library Association to encourage and support research with potential significance for academic libraries. Arnold holds an MLS from the Uni­ versity o f Alabama, a master’s o f sacred music from Wittenberg University, and a bachelor of arts from Huntingdon College. Patricia Battin, president o f the Commissipn on Preservation and Access, received the hon­ orary doctor o f humane letters degree from Emory University at its commencement ceremo­ nies in May. She was honored for developing a coordinated national approach to counter the deterioration and disintegration o f millions of library volumes and for marshaling congres­ sional appropriations to support the endeavor. She became the commission’s first president in 1987 after serving nine years as vice-president for information services and university librar­ ian at Columbia University. Joanne G. Marshall, associate professor at the Faculty o f Library and Information Science, University of Toronto, has been honored by two professional organizations. On May 13 Marshall was presented the Member o f the Year Award from the Special Libraries Association­ Toronto Chapter for her work on the impact of special librarians on corporate decision-mak­ ing. She also received the Ida and George Eliot Prize from the Medical Library Association for her publication “The Impact of the Hospital Library on Clinical Decision-Making: The Roch­ ester Study.” Linda Thornton, interlibrary loan librarian for Auburn University, has received the EBSCO Research Award for her paper “Interlibrary Loan Workload and Staffing.” The award is funded by EBSCO and presented annually by the College, University, and Special Li­ braries Division of the Ala­ bama Library Association to encourage and support re­ search with potential signifi­ cance for academic libraries. Thornton earned her MLS from Clarion University. Dorothy Woodson, librar­ ian at Lockwood Library, State University of New York at Buffalo, received a Ful- bright Senior Scholar Award for the 1993/94 academic year. Woodson, whose award is within the African Regional Research Program, will conduct research and assist in the organi­ zation o f recently unbanned historical manu­ scripts, archives, and newspapers located at the Mayibuye History Centre at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. Woodson is the author o f Drum: An Index to Africa’s leading Magazine, 1951-1965 and De­ cade o f Discontent: An Index to “Fighting Talk” 1954-1963. Hotchkiss, library director at Aus­ tin Presbyterian Theological Seminary since 1989, has been named director o f the Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School o f Theology. Hotchkiss holds a Ph.D. in medieval studies from Yale Univer­ sity, an MLS from Southern Connecticut State University, and a B.A. in classical languages from the University of Cincinnati. Active in the American Theological Library Association, she is now serving on its education committee and as chair o f the Collection Evaluation and De­ velopment Section. She is also a founding mem- ber and president-elect of the Southwest Ameri­ can Theological Library Association. Richard J. Kuhta, university librarian at St. Lawrence U niversity since 1986, has b een named librarian o f the Folger Shakespeare Li­ brary in W ashington, D.C. Kuhta is a gradu­ ate of Swarthmore Col­ lege, with an M.A. in S h ak esp eare stu d ie s from the Shakespeare Institute in Birm ing­ ham, England, and an MLS from C olum bia University. His new duties w ill b e g in in Richard J. Kuhta February 1994. Gerald R. L owell, associate university librar­ ian and director for technical services at Yale University since 1986, w as appointed univer­ sity librarian at the University o f California, San Diego. He assumed his new duties April 1. Prior to joining Yale, Lowell served as head of the Cataloging Distribution Service at the Library of Congress, as a vice-president of the Faxon Company, and on the staff of the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. He received his B.A. in Russian area studies from Gustavus Adolphus College and his MLS from the Uni­ versity of Washington. Richard W. Oram, public services librarian at the University o f Texas (UT) at Austin, has been appointed librarian o f the Harry Ransom Hu­ manities Research Center at UT. Karin W ittenborg, associate university librar­ ian for collection developm ent at the Univer­ sity of California, Los Angeles, has been named university librarian for the University o f Vir­ ginia, Charlottesville. Wittenborg received her MLS from the State University o f New York at Buffalo and her bachelor o f arts from Brown University. She has served at Stanford Univer­ sity as chief reference librarian and as curator of the social sciences. She was also a Council on Library Resources academic library m anage­ ment intern at MIT in 1981-82. C am pbell, chief of the Music Divi­ sion of the New York Public Library (NYPL) at Lincoln Center until his retirement in 1985, died Ju n e 12 at the age o f 76. Campbell began his career as a m usic cataloger at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, then spent 16 years as a music librarian at the Li­ brary o f Congress. He began his association w ith NYPL in 1959- A m em ber and past-presi­ dent of the Music Library Association, Campbell also edited the journal Notes from 1971-1974, taught music history at W ashington’s American University, and w as music critic for the Wash­ ington Evening Star from 1953-1959- A gradu­ a te o f S alem C o lle g e in N o rth C a ro lin a , Campbell received his master’s degree in m u­ sic from the Eastman School of Music. Laura D aw n P oh lm an , a former librarian at the New York Public Library, died on May 28 in Virginia Beach. Pohlm an began working as a librarian in the Branch Libraries in the early 1940s. After leaving to join the U.S. Navy dur­ ing World W ar II, she returned to the staff of th e Reference D epartm ent Science Division w here she advanced to the position o f assis­ tant chief. Later, in her dual capacity as chief of the Cooperative Services Departm ent and as­ sistant director o f METRO, Pohlm an w as active in prom oting cooperative programs am ong li­ braries through the CARES program and the Research Libraries Group. She retired in 1979. Ju d ith T h iele, reference librarian at the Uni­ versity o f British Columbia (UBC) since 1972, died o n April 27 at the age of 49. Thiele earned her B.A. and BLS from UBC, and cofounded w ith her husband Paul the Crane Memorial Li­ brary at UBC in 1968. She w as internationally recognized as an information, technology, and braille expert; taught in UBC’s faculty o f ed u ­ cation; and received the Canada 125 aw ard from the Canadian governm ent in recognition of her contributions to the community. D avid L. T hom as, a librarian at the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University from 1956 until his retirement in 1983, died in June at the age of 64. A veteran o f the U.S. Air Force, Tho­ mas received a B.S. from the Cornell College of Agriculture in 1955, and an MLS from Syra­ cuse University in 1956.
