ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries February 1 9 9 4 /9 3 G ra n ts a n d Acquisitions The American Antiquar­ ian Society (AAS) has b een aw arded a three-year grant of $750,000 from th e Lila W a ll a c e - R e a d e r ’s D ig e s t Fund o f N ew York City to s u p p o r t in itia tiv e s to in ­ crease aw areness a n d use of the S ociety's in d e p e n d e n t research library. T he AAS, the th ird o ld e s t h isto rical society in the U nited States, m aintains a library of Ameri­ can history an d culture that includes m aterials p rinted in the U nited States dating from th e establishm ent of a press in 1639 thro u g h 1876. Dalhousie University Libraries in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have received a grant o f $23,000 from the U.S. Inform ation A gency (USIA) to increase library holdings in American studies. The aw ard is the sequel to the visit by an Ameri­ can Library Fellow w h o sp en t six m onths evalu­ ating the library’s American studies collection. The funds will allow pu rch ase o f publications about American business, black and native stud­ ies, history, literature, an d politics. The Library/ Book Fellow Project, adm inistered by ALA and funded by the USIA, is d esig n ed to increase international understanding of the U nited States. Hie Louisiana State University and Agri­ cultural and Mechanical College has b een aw arded $2,480,000 from the U.S. D epartm ent of E ducation to im prove an d ex ten d the exist­ ing Louisiana library netw orks. The resulting system will o p erate throug h the statew ide fi­ ber optic telecom m unication netw ork m anaged by the sta te ’s Office o f T elecom m unications Management. W hen th e project is fully im ple­ m ented, Louisiana citizens will have an elec­ tronic w in d o w to inform ation resources stored in libraries an d d a ta b a se s in L ouisiana an d throughout th e w orld. The N ew berry Library of Chicago has been aw ard ed a three-year grant o f $1.3 mil­ lion from the Lila W allace-Reader’s Digest Fund. The grant will b e u se d to establish th e N ew ­ berry Library Lyceum, w hich will offer a vari­ ety o f public program s, exhibitions, concerts, lectures, readings, an d sem inars. T he N ew berry Library, w h ic h o p e n e d in 1887, in c l u d e s m a te r ia ls from th e late Middle Ages to the en d o f th e N apoleonic Era. A m erican w o rk s d ate from the earliest settlem ents in th i s c o u n t r y to th e present. Princeton U niversity's Firestone Library has b e e n a w a rd e d a $600,000 g rant from the King Fahd National Library o f Saudi A rabia to s u p p o rt th e library’s p ath- breaking Arabic b o o k preservation project. T he grant is part of a long-term partnership betw een th e tw o libraries to m icrofilm an d p reserv e P rinceton’s 110,000-volume collection o f Ara­ bic an d Islamic materials, the only such project for Arabic boo k s in the w orld. B egun in 1989 w ith a grant from th e N ational E ndow m ent for the H um anities, the project has gained su p p o rt from o th er governm ent agencies and private donors. The Smithsonian Institution Libraries have estab lish ed tw o e n d o w m en ts. T h e S. Dillon Ripley Library E ndow m ent o f $278,000 honors the form er Secretary o f th e Sm ithsonian Insti­ tution w h o fo u n d ed the libraries 25 years ago. T he e n d o w m e n t, w h ich w as estab lish ed on Ripley’s 80th birthday w ith contributions from som e 200 w ell-w ishers, will su p p o rt acquisi­ tions in th e 18-branch system. An en d o w m en t o f $343,000 from th e sale o f d uplicate boo k s in th e natural history collections will b e u sed to su p p o rt special collections purchases. The University of California, Riverside, has received three grants totaling $1.1 m illion— $525,000 from the National E ndow m ent for the H u m an ities; $325,000 from th e A n d rew W. M ellon F o u n d atio n ; a n d $250,000 from th e D epartm ent o f Education. T he aw ards will su p ­ p o rt the com pletion of the E ighteenth-C entury Short Title C atalogue project, the cataloging of all boo k s pub lish ed in G reat Britain o r its colo­ nies betw een 1701 and 1800. The project, w hich b eg an in 1977, is ex p ected to b e com plete in 1995 an d will include a half-million titles. Books a n d docum ents, such as handbills, flyers, and pam phlets, are reco rd ed by author, title, su b ­ 94 / C&RL News ject, date, publisher, and w here the copies are held. Up to one-third o f the entries exist only as a single know n copy. The University of Texas at Austin's Grad­ uate School o f Library and Information Science has b e e n g ran ted $60,000 from th e T em ple Foundation, matching a grant from the National E ndow m ent for the H umanities, to support the Preservation and Conservation Studies Program. The funds will be allocated to conservator stu­ dent stipends, w hich will allow qualified and talented students to com plete the highly inten­ sive program for the training o f preservation adm inistrators and conservators for library and archive materials. Acquisitions The papers of American poet Ja m es Dickey, along w ith an extensive collection of personal an d professional items, have b een acquired by the Special Collections D epartm ent o f Em ory University. T he significant acquisi­ tion will be part o f the Floyd C. Watkins Ameri­ can Literary M anuscripts Collection. Personal c o rre sp o n d e n c e from R obert P enn W arren, photos from the m ovie set o f Deliverance, and corresp o n d en ce from his first wife are som e of the items in m ore than 50 boxes of materials. Familiar to many as the author o f the 1970 novel D eliverance‚ Dickey is first an d forem ost a poet. O ver his long career as a m an o f letters, Dickey has published m ore than a do zen collections o f poem s, as w ell as three novels. The collec­ tion includes h undreds o f drafts of poem s as well as m ultiple drafts o f his first tw o novels an d o ther prose writings. The earliest literary m anuscripts date from the early 1950s w hen D ickey w as a y oung and un k n o w n poet. T he collection, w hich features 205 titles in 11 languages, provides a rich selection o f major E uropean texts on riding, training, breeding, cavalry, and veterinary m edi­ cine from the Renaissance to the late 19th cen ­ tury. The collection traces back to Ludwig Baron v on H unersdorf (1748-1812), a G erm an riding m aster w ho in 1790 published his ow n treatise on equitation. T hrough the years, the books w ere passed dow n through the von H unersdorf family an d su p p lem en ted w ith additional ac­ quisitions. T he O h rstro m F o u n d atio n , N ew Y ork, o b ta in e d th e collection from Richard B aron von H unersdorf, Ludwigs’s great-great- great grandson, an d presented it to the National Sporting Library. The entire collection of the Bing Crosby Historical Society has b een acquired by Foley Library at Gonzaga University in Spokane, W ashington, Crosby’s alma mater. T he addi­ tion d o u b le d G onzaga’s previous collection, m aking it the w o rld ’s largest public collection o n this entertainer. T he items include over 800 78-rpm records, 200 LP album s, 100 books, 700 audiocassettes, 150 videotapes, sh eet music, new sclippings, scrapbooks, Bing Crosby col­ oring books, his b o ard gam e called “Call Me L ucky” (m a n u fa c tu re d by P ark er B rothers), em pty pint cartons o f Bing Crosby Ice Cream, and h u ndreds o f individual photographs. O ne o f the highlights of the collection is a health device called “Stretch to Your Health w ith the Stars,” a rubberized piece o f equipm ent in its original box. The library is planning renova­ tions of the exhibit area in its C rosbyana Room.
