E ach library should consciously select those 
crite ria  upon w hich a decision will b e  m ade 
w h e th e r o r not to accept th e  m atch b e tw e e n  
th e  shelflist item  and a MARC reco rd  already 
c o n v e rte d . T h e se  c r ite ria  can in c lu d e  m ain 
e n try , title , e d itio n , im p rin t, collation, and 
se rie s sta te m e n ts. C e rta in  conditions o f d is­
crepancy in all o r som e of th e se  d e sc rip tiv e  
c a ta lo g in g  e n t r i e s  m ay b e  a c c e p te d  in th e  
in te re st of co m p letin g  th e  work in h an d  in a 
respectively sh o rt am o u n t o f tim e. T h e  p oint 
to b e  m ade, though, is th a t certa in  of th ese 
d isc rep an c ie s can n o t b e ig n o red  in th e  final 
analysis. F o r exam ple, you may accept sh o rt­
te rm  inadequacies w ith resp ec t to co m p le te ­
ness of e n try  in th e  m ain e n try  m atch, b u t 
som e p o st-ed itin g  should b e  d one in o rd e r to 
check for co n sisten t spelling, syntax, p u n c tu a ­

an d  th at th e  cataloging is essentially acce p t­
ab le to th e  in stitu tio n  p e rfo rm in g  th e  co n v er­
sion. T h e  second p a rt of th e  conversion is to 
e d it sets of re la te d  filing en trie s in o rd e r to 
d e te r m in e  w h a t rev isio n s m u st b e  m a d e  to 
choice of en try  and form o f heading.

T his, th e n , leads to m y sta te m e n t th a t it is 
n e c e s s a r y  fo r m a n a g e m e n t to  p r e d e f in e  
“ g u id e lin e s ” to  a id  e d itin g  te a m s in b o th  
phases of th e  conversion.

Based u pon o u r exp erien ce w ith large-scale 
c o n v ersio n s in th e  acad e m ic c o m m u n ity  w e 
have found th a t it is v ery  im p o rtan t to make 
th is d istin c tio n  in o r d e r  th a t th e  p ro je c t is 
c o m p leted  in a reasonable am o u n t o f tim e  and 
w ith  a re a so n a b le  a m o u n t o f cost a n d  w ith
