The beautiful spring weather in Salt Lake City provided a glorious backdrop to a stimulating array o f speakers and ideas. Julian B ond o p e n e d the conference w ith a m oving review o f civil rights in the U.S., re­ m inding us o f w h at it is to b e a have-not. Paul Saffo gave us a look at the p h e n o m e n a o f over­ night success— technologically speaking it takes ab o u t 20 years to achieve overnight success— an d predicted that libraries will b e everyw here b u t now here; they will b e less o f a place and m ore o f a space. Catharine Stimpson review ed the role o f w o m e n ’s studies in h igher ed u ca­ tion an d W. D avid P ennim an challenged us to find new w ays to m easure th e effectiveness and success o f library services. The many papers an d program s offered prac­ tical ideas for m anaging day-to-day library o p ­ erations an d providing library services. C&RL N ew s’ call for reporters w as so successful and the reports so interesting that this issue co n ­ tains the first o f tw o articles reporting o n the conference. The seco n d article will ap p e a r in th e J u ly /A ugust issue. I w a n t to ex te n d my thanks to the m any volunteer reporters w h o to o k o n the difficult job of providing succinct (an d interesting) sum m aries o f program s— and m ade a quick deadline!
