ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries C&RL News ■ October 2001 / 927 C o l l e g e & R e s e a r c h L i b r a r i e s news ACRL leadership opportunities Get involved I ncrease your involvement in ACRL by vol unteering to serve on a division or section committee. Vice-president Helen H. Spalding invites all ACRL m embers to contact the Appoint ments Committee about serving on one of ACRL’s 24 committees for next year. Mem bers may also contact one of the section vice chairs regarding service on one of the many section committees. Committee m em bers help shape the orga nization by implementing its strategic plan ( a v a ila b le a t h t t p : / / w w w .a l a .o r g / a c r l / stratpla.html), reshaping the association, and influencing the direction of academ ic and research librarianship. You benefit by volunteering Volunteers not only give to the association, they get back from the association. You will: • Build ties with academic and research librarians around the country. • E n h a n c e y o u r le a d e r s h ip a b ilitie s through consensus building and persuasion. • Share your expertise with colleagues. • Gain additional expertise by learning m o re a b o u t a n e w a r e a o f a c a d e m ic librarianship or picking up new ideas for your current area. Appointments: The process Appointments are made at both the section and division levels. The ACRL vice president is responsible for the committee appointments at the division level for the year he or she serves as president. Likewise, section vice chairs are responsible for committee appoint ments in their respective sections the year they serve as chair. Committee slates are usually com pleted shortly after the Midwinter Meet ing during the year in which the individual serves as president-elect or chair-elect. The ACRL Appointm ents Committee assists the president-elect in this process in an advisory capacity. Factors influencing appointment Although the emphasis in the appointm ent process may vary from year to year accord ing to the prerogatives of the president-elect and section chairs, the same factors are con sidered. They include: • E v id e n c e o f p o t e n t i a l c o m m it t e e m e m b e r ’s in te r e s t. Have you attended the meetings and introduced yourself to the chair? Do you have previous experience that relates to the w ork of the committee? Have you indi cated your interest on the volunteer form? • D e m o g r a p h ic s a n d c o m p o s it io n o f c o m m itte e . A balance is sought with respect to type of library (community college, col lege, or university), geographic representa tion, ethnic diversity, and gender. • T h e r e c o m m e n d a t io n o f t h e c u r r e n t c o m m itte e ch air. Current committee chairs are asked to suggest potential members. Al though all of these factors are considered, the final appointm ents are the prerogative of the ACRL president-elect and the section chair- elects. How to apply 1) S elect th e c o m m itte e s th a t in te r e s t y o u . The ALA H andbook o f O rganization lists all of ACRL’s committees and their charges. {Ed. note: The handbook is published as a special issue of A m erican Libraries and will auto matically be mailed to all ALA m embers in http://www.ala.org/acrl/ 928 / C&RL News ■ October 2001 mid-November.) Attend the committee’s meet ings at the Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference to help you decide if those are the activities that interest you. 2 ) I n tr o d u c e y o u r s e lf. Talk with com mittee members. Express your interest to the committee chair. Explain how you might con tribute to the w ork of the committee. 3 ) S u b m it a v o lu n t e e r fo r m . Complete the volunteer form included w ith this article. (Ed. note: This form is also available on ACRL’s hom epage at http://w w w .ala.org/acrl/policy/ apxafrms.html.) Be sure to cover all of the items asked for in the background information section of the form. If you have attended committee m eet ings or programs, m ention that. Fill out one form for ACRL division comm ittees and a dif ferent form for each ACRL section you vol unteer to serve on. Send the ACRL committee volunteer form to D ebra L. Gilchrist at the address on the bottom of the volunteer form; send the section volunteer forms to the ap propriate section chair-elects (see list of ad dresses below). 4 ) V o lu n te e r a g a i n . . . a n d a g a in . If you are not successful in being appointed one year, volunteer again the next year . . . and the next. Rem ember that a m ultitude of fac tors— num ber of appointm ents m ade, num ber of volunteers for each committee, num ber of volunteers from your type of library or your geographic area— determ ine the actual appointm ent, and these factors change from year to year. A C R L se c tio n a p p o in tm e n ts ACRL has 17 sections (listed below ). You will find a description of their areas of responsi bility in the ALA H andbook o f O rganization, 2001-02. The chair-elect of a section appoints the chair and m em bers of all section commit tees. Most of these appointm ents are m ade in the spring for terms beginning immedi ately after the ALA Annual Conference. A list appears on the volunteer form at the end of this article. You will find the committees listed with a description of their charges in the ALA H andbook o f Organization. Appoint ments to ACRL standing committees are made in the spring for terms beginning immedi ately after the ALA Annual Conference. The Appointments Committee recom mends to the president-elect of ACRL the nam es of m em bers w ho might fill the vacancies. The presi dent-elect m akes the final appointm ents. If you w ant to be considered for an appoint m ent to an ACRL committee, com plete the form and return it to Debra L. Gilchrist at the address given on the form before Decem ber 4, 2000. E d ito ria l b o a rd s ACRL has editorial boards for these six publi cations: CHOICE, College & Research Librar ies, College & Research Libraries News, New Publications, Publications in Librarianship, and Rare Books & M anuscripts. Appointments to editorial boards are made at the Midwinter Meeting for terms that begin immediately after the ALA Annual Conference. The editors recom m end the nam e of a person to fill a vacancy. The Publications Committee must approve the recommendation, and the president of ACRL makes the appointment. If you w ould like to be considered for appoint m ent to an editorial board, contact the editor of the editorial board early in the fall.
