The McGoogan Library o f Medicine at the U n iv e rs ity o f N e b ra s k a M e d ic a l C e n te r (UNMC) has b e e n aw arded a UNMC Com­ puting Services’ small technology grant to ex­ plore software to provide virtual reference services. The tw o-year aw ard will allow the re fe re n c e a n d e d u c a tio n d e p a rtm e n ts at M cGoogan to purchase the service contract for tw o years from LSSI (m akers of Virtual Reference Desk), to acquire a portable com ­ pu ter so that librarians can cover evening ref­ erence hours from hom e, and will allow fund­ ing for cam p u sw id e publicity o f the new service. Langford, was a high school teach er and county agricultural agent. ECU’s Joyner Library h ad its North Carolina Collec­ tion nam ed after Verona Langford and its clock tow er after Verona and Fred Langford. It also in cludes rec o rd in g s o f his p o p u la r boleros, p a ro d ie s such as “I Left my Car in San Francisco,” a n d “La Cancion M exicana” (unofficial Mexi­ can national anthem ). T he m u se u m ’s collection focuses on w e stern Lake Superior a n d th e m aritim e in­ dustry in a n d a ro u n d the tw in ports of Supe­ rior, W isconsin, a n d D uluth, M innesota. The m aterial includes an extensive collection of b o o k s, p erio d icals, g o v e rn m e n t registers, historic h arb o r charts, sh ip s’ logs, navigation charts, m aps, a n d m ore th an 30,000 p h o to ­ graphs o f cu rrent a n d historical ships.
