Jared Lowenstein, Ibero- American bibliographer and curator o f the Jorge Luis Borges Collection at the University o f Virginia, Charlottesville, was awarded the José Toribio Medina Prize in publishing for his 1993 compi­ lation, A Descriptive Catalogue o f the Jorge Luis Borges Collection at the University o f Virginia Library (University Press o f Virginia). Nearly a decade in the making, the book is an anno­ tated checklist o f works by and about the Ar­ gentine literary giant. The award was made by SALALM during its annual conference. Alice Hastings Murphy, library director emeri­ tus at the University at Albany, State University o f N ew York, was honored recently by the es­ tablishment o f a new endowed scholarship fund in her name. It will provide scholarships for student library employees and full-time library staff who plan to become librarians. Murphy led the libraries from 1956 to 1970. Rowena Olsen, McPherson College librarian, has assumed the position o f president o f the Kansas Library Association (KLA). Olsen has been a member o f KLA for more than 20 years, and served since 1993 in the second and then first vice-president positions. Patricia M. Larsen, assistant director for ac­ cess services at the University o f Northern Iowa, has been named director o f the U n iv e rs ity o f Texas at El Paso Library. In her 22-year career as a librarian, Larsen has held professional posi­ tions at three academic libraries, and served as a Fulbright lecturer in Bu­ charest, Rom ania, in 1992-93. D eaths Scott Benjamin Birkinshaw, instructor and general reference bibliographer at Weber State University (WSU), Ogden, Utah, died in Au­ gust. Birkinshaw began working at WSU in 1972 after receiving his MLS from Brigham Young ­ University. He received his B.A. in music from the University o f Utah, and was a member of the Utah Symphony. Richard Alan Farley, director o f the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland, from 1974 to 1983, died in September at the age o f 76. Farley began his career in 1941 as assistant librarian at Beloit College. In 1946 he joined the staff o f the University o f Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Library, where he became assistant di­ rector, left in 1949 to become director o f librar­ ies at Drake University, and returned to UNL in 1954 as associate director. Farley also served as professor and librarian at Kansas State Teach­ ers College (1963-66), professor and head o f the land-grant library system at Kansas State University (1966-72), and director o f libraries at McGill University, Montreal (1972—74). A member o f ALA for 53 years, Farley served on its Council from 1962 to 1966, and held offices in ACRL and other professional organizations. Philip Lindell, a librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) from 1957 to 1979, died September 21. Lindell served as a librarian at the University o f Southern Califor­ nia (1953-57), and at UIUC as binding librar­ ian, serials cataloger, and principal classifier. Martha Jane Phillips, assistant for public ser­ vices operations at the University o f Texas at Austin (UTA), died in May. She had worked in the UTA General Libraries since 1976.
