A recent Harris Poll found that the percentage o f adults in the United States using
the Internet has not changed significantly since last year. A telephone survey com­
pleted last m onth found that 64 percent of adults o r approximately 127 million are 
online, an increase o f only one percent over last year. The proportion of adults 
online increased from 9 percent in 1995 to 63 percent in 2000.

The G overnm ent Printing Office (GPO), established in 1860, sells about 12,000
different publications o f governm ent agencies, administers the depository li­
brary program  in 1,400 libraries, and provides m ore than 70 federal publications 
online.

T he GPO w as appropriated a total o f $110.6 million for fiscal year 2002 and has 
m ore than 3,200 full time equivalent (FTE) em ployees. GPO Access, the G PO ’s 
Internet site provides access to “m ore than 200,000 titles and is used by the 
public to  retrieve 30 million docum ents each m o nth.”

C enter fo r  Research Libraries
Among the eclectic research collections at the C enter for Research Libraries in
Chicago are about 800,000 foreign doctoral dissertations, college catalogs dating 
back as m any as one h u n d red  years, all the docum ents o f the N urem berg Trials, 
and thousands of international new spapers. F ounded by 13 schools in 1949 as 
the Midwest Inter-Library Center, the m em bership o f the center now  includes 
m ore than 200 institutions.

Florida's largest lib ra ry
Nova Southeastern University’s new  Library, Research, and Inform ation Tech­
nology Center, w ith an official o p ening held D ecem ber 8, “will be Florida’s 
largest library at full capacity.” The n ew  facility has 20 electronic classrooms, a 
2,000-square-foot exhibit hall, and a 500-seat auditorium.

In fo rm a tio n  science articles in electronic jo u rn als
A study o f 28 e-journals finds the n u m b er o f inform ation science articles co n ­
tained in the journals increasing from 26 in 1995 to a n  expected 250 articles in
2001. “A bout tw o-thirds of the articles originate in academ ic institutions. Com­
m on topics o f e-journal articles in inform ation science include electronic infor­
m ation, electronic publishing, virtual (digital) libraries, inform ation search and 
retrieval, an d  use o f the Internet.”
