B a t t i n has b e e n named v ice - president and university librarian at C olum bia University, it has been announced by Columbia P re s id e n t W illia m J. McGill. A librarian in univer­ sities for nearly fo u r ­ teen years, Battin will take charge o f o n e o f the largest private re­ search library systems in the nation. The C o­ lum bia U niversity L i­ braries, c o v e rin g both the arts and sc ie n c e s and the p ro fe s sio n s , con tain m o re than 4,730,500 volum es and Patricia M. Battin c irc u la te m o re than 1,300,000 volumes annually. She will assume responsibilities held for eight years by Warren J. Haas, w ho becam e president o f the Council on Library Resources in Washing­ ton, D .C ., in January. The effective date o f her appointment is March 1, 1978. She becom es C o ­ lumbia’s first woman vice-president. Battin has been director o f the Library Services Group in the Columbia Libraries since 1974 and has been responsible for coordinating Colum bia’s participation with the Harvard, Yale, and New York P u b lic lib ra rie s in R e se a rch L ib ra rie s Group, Inc., a consortium o f cooperating library systems. During the ten previous years she rose from library intern to assistant director o f the li­ brary at the State U niversity o f N ew York at Binghamton. “ R esearch libraries will face u n preced en ted challenges during the next several years, as we seek new ways to preserve our intellectual heri­ tage in an environment o f shrinking financial re­ sources and increasing service demands,” Battin said in accepting her new position. “The C olum ­ bia University library staff is a strong and tal­ ented one, and the quality o f the collections is e x c e lle n t. I look forw ard to an e x c itin g and stimulating association as we respond to the chal­ lenge o f maintaining the distinctive library serv­ ices which have long been a hallmark o f C olum ­ bia University.” Battin was b o m in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, June 2, 1929. She was graduated from Swarth­ more C ollege in 1951 with a B.A. in English lit­ erature and election to Phi Beta Kappa. She pur­ sued American studies at the University o f Min­ nesota from 1952 to 1954, married, and raised a family. She returned to university life and earned a master o f science degree in library service at Syracuse University in 1967. She studied Ameri­ can history at the State University at Bingham­ ton, where she was prom oted through the ranks o f assistant librarian, associate librarian, and as­ sistant to the d ire c to r with resp on sibility for budget and personnel. She was the library’ s as­ sistant director for reader services when she left in 1974 to join Columbia. She is a m em ber o f the board o f directors o f the Research Libraries G roup and serves on the selection com m ittee o f the C ouncil on Library R esources Library S ervice E nhancem ent P ro­ gram. She is a consultant to the National E n ­ dow m ent for the Humanities and is a m em ber o f the N EH C ollege Library Panel and the Ameri­ can Library Association. She has two daughters and a son and lives on Manhattan’s Upper W est Side, near Columbia. F r e d M c C r a e Pe t e r s o n has been appointed director o f libraries at the Catholic University o f America. Form er associate chairman o f the uni­ versity’s department o f library scien ce, P eter­ son has been acting di­ rector o f the university lib ra rie s sin ce July 1977. The university librar­ ies house approximately o n e m illion v o lu m e s , the largest c o lle c t io n am ong the D istrict o f C olum bia universities. It is know n am ong scholars for its special c o lle c t io n s , in c lu d in g Fred M cC rae Peterson the 10,000 rare books from the eighteenth-century library o f Pope C le ­ ment XI. Peterson joined Catholic University in 1973 as assistant professor in the department o f library and information science. He served as associate chairman o f the department from 1974 to 1977. In 1977 Peterson developed Motivation; A Vital F orce in the Organization: A Horne Based Study C ourse f o r Library and Information Profession­ als, which will be published and distributed by Catholic University. Peterson is a m em ber o f the American Library Association, Catholic Library Association, D .C . Library Association, and is active in the Associa­ tion o f A m erican L ibrary S c h o o ls , w h e re he served as program chairman for the annual m eet­ ing in 1975. Peterson was b o m in 1936 in Minneapolis and 179 received his B.A. in 1958 and M .A . in 1961 at the University o f M inneapolis. H e receiv ed his P h .D . in 1975 at Indiana University. H e served on the faculty at Iowa State University at Am es in library administration from 1961 to 1970 w here his last position was that o f associate director o f the library. E d w a r d C o n n e r y L a t h e m , D a r t m o u th ’ s dean o f libraries and librarian o f the college, will assum e a n ew p o sitio n at D artm ou th C o lle g e after leaving his present post at the close o f the current academ ic year. K em eny has announced that Dean Lathem, w ho indicated a year ago his intention to conclud e in Ju ne o f 1978 his quarter-century associa­ tion with the c o lle g e ’ s library system , will be nam ed W oodw a rd F e l­ low, effective July 1. E dward C on n ery F o llo w in g a y e a r ’ s Lathem sabbatical leave during 1978-79, Lathem will actively take up, on a part­ time basis, the duties o f his fellow ship, which has been named for Bezaleel W oodw ard, first librar­ ian o f the college, as well as on e o f its earliest teachers and the h o ld e r o f several o f its m ajor administrative posts. Recalling that he had said, in acknow ledging Lathem’ s letter o f resignation in D e cem b er 1976, that L a th e m ’ s c o m p l e t e se p a ra tio n from Dartmouth would constitute “ an irreparable mis­ take for the institution,” President K em eny ex­ pressed particular satisfaction that, with trustee endorsem ent, the W oodw ard Fellowship will as­ sure continuance o f an active association betw een the college and its longtim e librarian. In his capacity as W oodw a rd Fellow , Lathem will com b in e and expand several com m itm ents that he has, ov er the years, carried forward while concurrently serving within the libraries. T he editor or com p iler o f m ore than a score o f books, Lathem is recogn ized as a leading author­ ity on Robert Frost and has edited several vol­ umes o f the famous author’s writings, including the standard com p reh en sive collection (1969) o f F rost’ s poetry. O th e r o f L athem ’ s p ublications deal with historical and biographical subject mat­ ter, am ong them a volum e o f Calvin C oolidge let­ ters, which received in 1970 an award o f merit from the A m e rica n A sso c ia tio n fo r State and Local History, and a work entitled Chronological Tables o f A m erican N ew sp a pers 1690-1 820 , is­ sued in 1972 by the American Antiquarian Soci­ ety. During his recent presiden cy o f the Associa­ tion o f Research Libraries, he edited two substan­ tial h is to rica l-b ib lio g ra p h ica l v o lu m e s for that bod y — 76 United Statesiana and Thirteen C o lo ­ nial Americana. W it h r e s p e c t to p u b lic a t io n in te r e s ts at Dartmouth, Lathem was responsible for the o r­ ganization o f the M icrofilm Edition o f the Papers o f Daniel W eb ster and the launching o f the ov er­ all W ebster Papers p roject, was originator o f the con cept for establishing the University Press o f N ew England and has coordinated such historical enterprises as the c o lle g e ’ s oral history program and books relating to form er presidents Ernest Martin Hopkins and John Sloan D ickey. H e is the editor o f D ick ey’ s recently published volum e The Dartm outh E xperience. U nder his W oodw ard F ellow ship appointment, Lathem will continue to exercise oversight re­ garding matters associated with co lle ge history, its m a te ria ls, and d is s e m in a t io n . H e w ill as W o o d w a r d F e llo w e x t e n d his e d ito r ia l and scholarly activities, both personally and on behalf o f the c o lle g e , and from tim e to time be c o n ­ c e r n e d w ith sp e c ia l a c a d e m ic in itia tiv e s at Dartmouth. In addition, he will b e involved with major benefactions to the college, including the m aintenance o f clo se institutional relationships with donors and others. Lathem will report, in his new capacity, to V ice-P resident Leonard M . Rieser, dean o f the faculty o f arts and scien ces and c h ie f academ ic officer o f the college. D ean Rieser, in com m en t­ ing on President K em eny’ s announcem ent, spoke o f his warm pleasure that Lathem ’s w ide-ranging interests and talents will continue to be available to Dartmouth. Bezaleel W oodw a rd (1 745-1804), from whom the fellow sh ip takes its nam e, was a native o f Lebanon, C onnecticut, and a student, son-in-law, and d e v o t e d c o -w o r k e r o f th e R e v . E le a za r W h eelock , D artm outh’ s founder and first presi­ d e n t. W o o d w a r d c a m e to H a n o v e r a fte r W h eelock had secured a charter for his college from the royal g o v e rn o r o f N ew Ham pshire in 1769, and he was the first tutor appointed by the college’ s trustess. In subsequent years he served in va rio u s p r o fe s s o r ia l and a d m in istra tiv e capacities, including that o f librarian, as well as becom ing a prom inent figure in patriotic efforts during the American Revolution and in town and regional affairs thereafter. Issue no. 1, January 1978, consists o f an annotated bibliography on desert gardening— desert plants and their cultivation. A second issue in publication is on vegetable cookery, and two m ore are being com pleted on the gesneriads (African violets and their relatives) and orchids. The council hopes that each Plant Bibliography will be an invaluable aid to librar­ ians, researchers, and others needing specialized bibliographic information in the fields o f botany and horticulture.
