Sushan C hin and J a n ic e Mathews have been selected by the National Historical Publications and Records Commis­ sion (NHPRC) as the two Fellows in Archival Administration for 1994-95. The fellowships support advanced administrative training for ar­ chivists who already have work experience and graduate education in their field. Chin is an archivist with the New York City Department of Records & Infonnation Services, Municipal Archives Division. She will work at the Minne­ sota Historical Society in Minneapolis. Mathews is an archivist with the Carl Albert Center Con­ gressional Archives at the University o f Okla­ homa, Norman. She will work at the Universi­ ty of Washington, Seattle. Frank K urt Cylke, director of the National Li­ brary Service for the Blind and Physically Hand­ icapped (NLS) of the Libraiy of Congress, was presented the Baker Medal at the June meet­ ing o f the Management Group, Canadian Na­ tional Institute for the Blind (CNIB) in New Brunswick. Cylke was honored for his close, synergistic, professional working relationship with CNIB; the development of U.S./Canada technological exchanges; and international sales and purchases of audio and braille books. Cylke was also honored recently as this year’s choice to receive the Joseph W. The award is given to minority men and women in business, industry, educa­ tion, and labor to honor significant contribu­ tions to the workplace and the Detroit com­ munity. Tucker has been at WSU since 1991. Her duties as multicultural librarian include collection development and coordinating cul­ tural diversity programs for the library system. B assham has been named director of learning resources at Luzerne County Commu­ nity College in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. H iram L. Davis, director o f libraries at Michi­ gan State University (MSU), has been appoint­ ed deputy librarian o f Congress. As the library’s chief operating officer, Davis will supervise the library’s day-to-day in­ ternal operations, and the library’s seven ser­ vice unit heads will re­ port to him. Davis’s 20- year career in librar­ ianship has included positions at the Univer­ sity of Kansas, Muskin­ gum College, Kalama­ Hiram L. Davis zoo Valley Community College, and the University of Oklahoma. He was head of the Undergraduate Library at the University of California, Los Angeles; dean of libraries at the University of the Pacific; and dean of the University Libraiy at New Mexico State University. He became director o f librar­ ies at MSU in 1989. A graduate o f Missouri Val­ ley College, Davis earned his MLS from Kansas State Teachers College in 1969, and his Ph.D. from the University o f Michigan in 1984. He has been active in ALA and ACRL, and helped establish the Michigan Research Libraries Tri­ angle Consortium in 1992. R obert P. Holley has been appointed director of Wayne State University’s (WSU) Library and Information Science Program. ACRL 1995 convention site As a convention city, Pittsburgh offers a com pact downtown area which is safe and easil navigable by foot or public transit. Withi roughly ten square blocks, restaurants and shop ping abound. One Oxford Center, PPG Place, and Fifth Avenue Place provide the most avi shopper hours o f pleasure in proximity to the Convention Center and hotels. Slightly furthe afield in the distinctive neighborhoods of the city are South Craig Street in Oakland, Walnu Street in Shadyside, Forbes and Murray Ave nues in Squirrel Hill, and East Carson Stree and Station Square on the South Side. The ACRL local arrangements committee has planned an array of events and tours designed to acquaint conference attendees with the city and its environs. Future articles will discuss in greater detail tours which are planned, cultural events, sightseeing, libraries, and local restau­ rants. Deaths Olga Torres-Seda Loomis, interlibrary loan and r e f e r e n c e lib ra ria n at L eh m an C o lle g e , New York, died May 11. Coauthor o f C a rib b e­ a n W om en N ovelists (1991) and The Tu›enti- eth-C en tu ry P u erto R ican S hort Story, Loomis was responsible for assistance to Lehman’s Spanish-speaking community and for its Span- ish-language collections. George M asterton , former collection devel­ opment librarian at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, died recently at the age o f 72. Masterton began working at WSU in 1965 as a reference librarian. In 1978 he received the G. Flint Purdy Memorial Award honoring outstand­ ing contributions to the WSU Library. He re­ tired in 1991. J a y M artin P oole, head librarian at the Col­ lege o f Santa Fe, New Mexico, died in July af­ ter suffering several heart attacks. Poole served previously as assistant director for collection and bibliographic ser­ vices, and assistant di­ rector o f collection de­ v e lo p m e n t at T e x a s A&M University; assis­ tant university librarian for public services at the University o f California, Irvine; and editor o f Choice magazine. He Ja y M artin Poole also held positions at the University of Texas at Austin, the State Uni­ versity o f New York at Buffalo, and the Uni­ versity o f Washington, Seattle. A graduate of the University o f Tulsa, Poole earned his MLS from the University o f Oklahoma.
