Over the years, he has distinguished himself as a public librarian, a historian, a journalist, and a communications consultant.” Starr will remain on the USC fac­ ulty and will teach one course there. K ie w itt retired as associate dean of Re­ gent University Library & Information Services in July after 13 years in that position. Before joining Regent, Kiewitt served as associate pro­ fessor and librarian at the School of Library and Inform ation Science at In d ian a University, Bloomington. She served on m any ALA and 6 8 4 /C&R L News ACRL committees, authored Evaluating Infor­ m ation Retrieval Systems, and coauthored the first two editions of The Directory o f Curricu­ lum Materials Centers. She has b een nam ed li­ brarian emeritus at Regent. L ois J. L e h m a n retired in August as dean of library and information services at Regent Uni­ versity in Virginia Beach, Virginia. During her 47-year career, Lehman taught at all levels and served as a librarian in public, school, and uni­ versity libraries. She has b een active in ALA and ACRL, coauthored the first two editions of The Directory o f Curriculum Materials Centers, and served as chair o f ACRL’s Education and Behavioral Sciences Section’s committee that produced The Directory o f Historical Curricu­ lu m Collections. She has been nam ed librarian emeritus at Regent. N o r m a n D . S te v e n s retired as director of uni­ versity libraries at the University o f Connecti­ cut (UC), Storrs, in May, w hen he becam e emeri­ tus director. Before join­ ing UC in 1968, Stevens served as acting univer­ sity librarian at Rutgers University, a n d acting director of university li­ braries at H oward Uni­ versity. He has authored o r e d i t e d 12 m o n o ­ g r a p h s , a n d w r itte n N o rm a n D. S tev en s m ore than 175 articles and more than 100 “O ur Profession” columns for the Wilson Library Bulletin. He is know n for his writings on library hum or and his col­ lections o f librariana and library postcards. H e’s b een a life m em ber of ALA since 1957. D e a th s J o s e p h C. B o r d e n , serials librarian at Purdue University until his retirement in 1974, died on June 10. Borden had also served as associate l ib r a r ia n a t th e U n iv e r s ity o f A rk a n s a s (1947-1965) and on the staff of the New York Public Library. C h a lm e r s G. D a v id s o n , co lleg e archivist (1975-1994) and library director (1936-1975) at Davidson College in North Carolina, died in Ju n e at the age o f 87. L o u is K a p la n , emeritus professor, retired chief librarian o f Memorial Library, and director of university libraries (1957-1971) at the Univer­ sity of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM), died in July at th e age o f 85. K aplan’s career at UWM spanned the years 1937 to 1977, interrupted by a three-year leave to serve in World War II. During that time he organized the first Refer­ ence D epartm ent o f the library and played a leading role in the design o f library facilities, including Memorial Library and College Library. He taught in the UWM library school until his retirement in 1977. J o h n K elly , chief bibliographer at the Univer­ sity of Alabama since 1990, died in July. Kelly formerly served as university bibliographer and curator for special collections at the University of Southern Mississippi and as special collec­ tions reference librarian at Mississippi State Uni­ versity. P atricia M iller K in g, Carl and Lily Pforzheimer F o u n d a tio n d ire c to r o f Radcliffe C o lleg e’s Schlesinger Library on the History o f W omen in America since 1973, died o f lung cancer last May. King’s career at Radcliffe included over­ seeing a $3.4 million renovation in 1987. In 1990 the Schlesinger Library received the Dis­ tinguished Service Award from the Society of American Archivists, and in 1993 the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation contributed a $2 million gift to endow King’s position.
