B u r k e t t , associate librarian o f the American Antiquarian Society since 1987, has been appointed that organization’s librarian, succeeding Marcus A. McCorison. Burkett joined the Society in 1973 as assistant curator o f manuscripts, then be­ came head o f readers’ services. She has served as associate librarian since 1987, and was elected to membership in the Society in 1989. Burkett received a B.A. from American University, an M.A. from Boston University, and an MLS from the University o f California, Los Angeles. She has served on the boards o f directors o f the Northeast Document Conservation Center, W orcester Area Cooperating Libraries, the W orcester Public Library, Friends of the W orcester Public Library, and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section o f ACRL. P a u l Z . D u B o i s , director o f the Trenton State College Library for 19 years, has been appointed dean o f library services at Winthrop College in South Carolina. Dubois’s previous positions have been assistant director o f the Kent State University L i­ brary (196 9 -7 2 ) and librarian for the New York State Historical Association (1964-69). A graduate o f Hiram College in Ohio, DuBois received his MLS from Kent State in 1960. He also holds a master’s and Ph.D. in American studies from Case Western R e­ serve University. He is the author o f Paul Leicester Ford, An American Man o f Letters and co-editor of Reading and the Art o f Librarianship. C h a r l e s E . K r a t z , assistant dean o f public ser­ vices at Hofstra University’s Axinn Library until Septem ber 1991, was appointed director o f the University o f Scranton’s Library, which will be housed in a new $13.3 million, five-story building which will open in early 1992. Kratz previously served as asso­ ciate director o f the Rider College Library, and as head o f public services for both the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University o f New Haven, Connecticut. He is an active member o f ALA and has served on or chaired several committees of A CRL and the Library Administration and Man­ agement Association. He is also vice-president of the New York Metropolitan Chapter o f ACRL. Kratz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University o f Notre Dame, and an MLS from the University o f Maryland. G a r y A . L e w i s , director o f library and media services at North Adams State College in Massa­ chusetts until August 1991, is the new dean of libraries at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. Lewis earned a bachelor’s in sociology from Ohio University, an M LS from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D . in higher educa­ tion administration from Virginia Polytechnic In­ stitute and State University. He served for 10 years as assistant director for technical services at Radford University in Virginia. T he author o f many profes­ sional articles, Lewis is the editor o f Learning at Risk: A Long-Range Plan f o r the Improvement o f Massachusetts Public Higher Education Libraries, published in 1990 by the Massachusetts Board of Regents o f Higher Education. E d w i n J o s e p h S a e g e r , rare book librarian at the Phoenix Public Library since 1987, has been appointed head o f the Rare Book Department at th e F r e e L ib rary o f Philadelphia, one o f the largest collections o f rare books in a public library in the country. Saeger previously worked as an adjunct professor at Ari­ zona State University in the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renais­ sance Studies, and as special collections cata- lo g e r fo r th e Haw - thome-Longfellow L i­ Edwin Josep h Saegerbrary at Bowdoin Col­ lege in Maine. C h a t m a n , associate professor at the University o f North Carolina (U N C) School of Information and Library Scien ce, has been elected the 1 9 9 1 -9 2 president-elect o f B eta Phi Mu, the international library science honor society. Chatman joined the U N C faculty in 1986 after teaching at Louisiana State University. She is also active in ALA, the Association for Library and Information Science Education, and the North Carolina Library Association. She has also been elected chair o f ALA's Library Research Round T able for 19 9 2 -9 3 . S a n d r a H a c k e t t , circulation/reserve assistant at the Scholes Library, part o f the New York State College o f Ceramics at Alfred University, recently receiv ed the T ru stees Award from the South C e n tra l R e se a rc h L i­ brary Council (SC R L C ) for rendering exceptional service to libraries in the south central region o f New York state. Hackett initiated the S C R L C L i­ brary Assistants Advisory Com m ittee in 1980 and served as its president. In 1988 she started the organization o f New York Sandra H ackett State Library Assistants, served as its president, and received its Ray Murray Award for outstanding service to library assistants. Pillow graduated from O SU in 1989 with a B.A. in economics and has been the recipient o f an O SU Minority Scholars Scholarship and Honorary, a C IC Sum mer R e ­ search Opportunities Program Award, and a Black American Scholar Award. J a m e s H . S w e e t l a n d , associate professor at the University o f Wisconsin-Milwaukee School o f L i­ brary and Information Science, has been awarded the Special Service Award by the Wisconsin Library Association for his many years o f visible leadership in the library profession. Sweetland has been very active in professional associations on a state and national level. H e is currently president o f the R eference and Adult Services Division o f ALA, and has served on the editorial board o f RQ. He has also written many articles, reviews, abstracts, book chap­ ters, conference papers, and monographs. P a t r i c i a Y o c u m , librarian at the University of Michigan, has begun her term as the 1 9 9 1 -9 2 president o f the Michigan Chapter o f the Special Libraries Association. Kramers’s major accomplishment at NU was the expansion and strengthening o f the book and journal collection, serving as the library’s collection development librarian as well as director. J o s e p h i n e L e e retired in Septem ber from the Stanford University Libraries after 24 years o f ser­ vice in collection development. She began her work at Stanford in the Libraries’ Resources Develop­ m ent Program, affiliated first with the German studies curator and then as a library specialist in the Romance Languages Section. She was also a main­ stay o f the acquisitions program ins in Fren ch and Italian studies. J a n e R o s s M o o r e , ch ief librarian at the Gradu­ ate C en ter Library o f the City University o f New York, retired in January after 13 years o f service. E d i t h P h i l l i p s , associate professor o f library science at Wayne State University for 23 years, retired in May and was honored with an endowed scholarship established in her name. Before joining W SU , Phillips was an English teacher and an assis­ tant school librarian. She worked in the circulation, extension, and catalog departments at the Univer­ sity o f Michigan and served as a librarian at the Chicago Jewish Academy. In her administrative career, she worked at the Kent County Library in Michigan, the Michigan D epartm ent o f Education, and the Library o f Michigan. His library career includes positions at the University o f Illi­ nois, Southern Illinois University, University of Iowa, and the U.S. Naval Academy. At FAU he was involved in the planning o f an addition to the library building, which doubled its size, and in the success­ ful automation o f the library as a participant in the Florida C en ter for Library Automation. After completion o f the new building, Skallerup stepped down as director and left administration in 1989 to return to cataloging. A graduate o f the U niversity o f Minnesota Library School, Skallerup is the author of B ooks Afloat and Ashore, a history of maritime libraries, as well as several articles in professional, scientific, and scholarly publications. S h e r w o o d S m i t h , deputy ch ie f and reference librarian at the City University o f New York(BM CC), retired in January after 17 years o f service. M a u d i n e B . W i l l i a m s , head librarian o f the Herron School o f Art Library at Indiana-Purdue University o f Indianapolis, retired in September. S am W o o d has retired after 3 0 years in the Catalog Department at the University o f Nevada, Reno. He had been a librarian for 1 0 years at the Missouri State Historical Society before joining UNR. His major contributions to the library were overseeing the reclassification project, the interfiling o f the Dewey and LC card catalogs, the Laser/ Quest p ro ject for getting serials quickly into WolfPAC, and the cataloging o f serial publications.
