W right, 75, Williams C ollege librar ian and form er A C R L president, died on O ctob er 2 in Portola Valley, California. H e had served as lib ra r ia n at W illia m s C o llege for tw enty-one years and after his re tir e m e n t had b e g u n a new c a r e e r as ra r e books cataloger at Stan ford U niversity L ib ra r ies. B ill was an extraordi nary in d iv id u al and a rem arkable addition to our co m p an y at S ta n ford during the past ten years. H e started work in Sep tem ber 1969 as a cataloger of sixteenth-century imprints, American almanacs, and also early American imprints in the D epartm ent o f Special Collections. H e reduced his sch ed u le to p a rt-tim e in 1974 b u t w orked until ju st the last few weeks before his death on cataloging o f th e m ost difficu lt im p rin ts, bo th monograph and serials and in a wide range of classical and m odern languages. During the en tire year 1 9 7 3 -7 4 , h e was c h ie f o f the D ep art m ent o f Special Collections. A Phi B eta Kappa, W right was a graduate of W illiam s C ollege, m ajoring in philosophy, and re c e iv e d his m a ster’s d eg ree from W illiam s in philosophy and G reek . He was a cataloger and c h ie f cataloger at the New York P ublic Library from 1927 to 1945, librarian of the Army Medical L ib r a r y d u rin g 1 9 4 5 - 4 6 , and lib r a r ia n for Williams from 1947 to 1968, when he ostensibly retired. Bill was president o f the Association of College and Research Libraries in 1 9 4 9 -5 0 , pres ident of the form er Cataloging and Classification Association, and recip ien t o f the M elvil Dewey Medal in 1957. In addition, from 1954 to 1967, he was chair of the Catalog Code Revision Com m ittee and chair from 1947 to 1967 of the Union List of Serials Joint Com m ittee. O ne of his vari ous publications was a 1948 translation o f the Vat ican cataloging rules. Perhaps B ill’s greatest achievem ent in special c o lle c tio n s was c le a r in g th e b a c k lo g o f u n cataloged item s. In a le tte r o f May 2 8 , 1970, Bill says, “I love to put through books that have been sittin g around for sev e nty -fiv e years o r so— it gives an impression of progress.” Bill also had the knack o f quickly identifying books th at lacked title p ages o r in cip its.
