also can provide leadership and direction in at least 
one of the following areas: (a) conceptual foundations of 
academic reference service, (b) academic library col­
lection development, especially as a reference staff

The a b ility to suggest and communicate new ideas and 
techniques is particularly important. The visiting librarian 
shares reference duties with other members o f the de­
partment and is involved in the department's participatory 
form o f governance. In addition to an ALA-accredi†ed 
degree, the candidate must have a second master's in a 
subject area, or equivalent academic or professional 
achievements, and must have at least four years re­
