ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 5 9 2 / C&RL News ACRL wants you! ACRL seeks v o lu n te e rs f o r sections, c o m m itte e s, a n d e d ito ria l b o a rd s A re you interested in contributing to ACRL? There are opportunities for your involve ment in ACRL sections, standing commit and editorial boards. ACRL needs your sup port to act best on the interests of its members. ACRL depends on members to volunteer for and serve on committees to accomplish its goals and objectives. With over 43 standing commit tees and 165 section committees there are lots of opportunities for serving ACRL. This article gives you a brief description of how the ACRL appointment process works. Appointments: The process Appointments are made at both the section and division levels. The ACRL president is respon sible for the committee appointments at the division level for the year he or she serves as president. Likewise, section chairs are respon sible for committee appointments in their re spective sections the year they serve as chair. Committee slates are usually completed shortly after the Midwinter Meeting during the year in which the individual serves as president-elect or chair-elect. The ACRL Appointments & Nomi nations Committee assists the president-elect in this process in an advisory capacity. Factors influencing appointm ent Although the emphasis in the appointment may vary from year to year according to the pre rogatives of the president and section chairs, the same factors are considered. They include: • e v i d e n c e o f p o t e n t i a l c o m m i t t e e m e m b e r ’s in terest. Have you attended the meetings and introduced yourself to the chair? Do you have previous experience that relates to the work of the committee? Have you indi cated your interest on the application? • d e m o g r a p h ic s a n d c o m p o s it i o n o f c o m m itte e . When making appointments an effort is made to keep the membership o f a committee balanced with respect to type of li brary (community college, college, or univer sity), geographic representation, ethnic diver sity, and gender. In addition, some committees have special requirements. For example, one member of the Professional Education Com temesit, tee must be a library educator; the Member ship and Legislative Committees have strict re gional representation requirements. • t h e r e c o m m e n d a t io n o f t h e c u r r e n t com m ittee chair. Current committee chairs are asked to suggest potential members. Although all of these factors are considered, the final appoint ment is the prerogative of the ACRL president-elect and the section chair-elects. H o w to a p p ly 1. Some president-elects opt for very few reappointm ents because of a desire for w ider participation and greater di versity. ACRL section appointm ents ACRL has 16 sections (their nam es are listed below). You will find a description of their ar eas of responsibility in the ALA H andbook o f Organization, 1992-93- The chair-elect of a section appoints the chair and members o f all section committees. Most of these appointm ents are m ade in the spring for terms beginning immediately after the ALA Annual Conference. If you w ould like to be considered for appointm ent as chair or mem b er o f a section committee, fill out the ACRL Committee Volunteer Form and mail it to the chair-elect o f the appropriate section listed b e low before December 15, 1992.
