Rosie Albritton, assistant professor for W ayne State University’s Library and Information Sci­ ence Program, Detroit, recently w o n the 1994 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) D oc­ toral Dissertation Award for her research paper e n titled “T ra n sform a ­ tional vs. Transactional Leadership in University Libraries: A Test o f the M odel and Its Relation­ ship to P e rc e iv e d Li­ b rary O rg a n iz a tio n a l Rosie Albritton Effectiveness.” Albritton received the award on February 2 at the 1994 ALISE Conference in Los Angeles. She w o n the ACRL/ISI Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for the same paper in 1992. Appointm ents Carol C. H enderson becam e executive direc­ tor o f A L A ’s W ashington O ffice March 1, 1994. Henderson, w h o has been deputy director o f the office since 1979, succeeds Eileen Cooke, w h o retired last Decem ber. As deputy director, Henderson coordinated the association’s successful effort to ensure par­ ticipation o f all types o f li­ braries in the N II and the NREN. She d evelo p ed col­ laborative congressional ef­ forts which resulted in con­ tinued funding o f D epart­ ment o f Education library programs slated for cutting, and coordin ated d e v e lo p ­ ment o f ALA recom m enda­ tions to Congress w hich re­ sulted in reauthorization o f Higher Education Act library programs. Carter, rare books and special col­ lections librarian at Indiana State University (ISU), Terre Haute, recently retired after more than 28 years o f service at ISU. Betty Bartlett Davis, associate dean for tech­ nical services at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, recently retired after 45 years in the field o f librarianship. E van Ira Fa r b e r w ill retire as E arlham College's librarian on June 30, 1994, after hold­ ing the position since 1962. A native N ew Yorker, Farber gradu­ ated from the University o f North Carolina and then its library school. In 1980 he was award­ ed an honorary doctor­ ate from St. Lawrence University and in 1987 was awarded the same from Susquehanna Uni­ versity. H e began his professional career in Evan Ira Farber 1953 as librarian o f State Teachers College in Livingston, Alabama, m ov­ ing to the Emory University Library in Atlanta in 1955 w here his mentor for the next seven years was Guy R. Lyle. A long-time m ember o f 230/C&RL News ACRL, Farber served as chair o f the C ollege Libraries Section (1968-69), president o f ACRL (1978-79), co-chair o f ACRL’s Fifth National Conference (1989), and as a m em ber o f the Board o f Directors (1989-1993). In 1980 he was chosen ACRL’s Academic/Research Librarian o f the Year and received the Miriam Dudley Bib­ liographic Instruction Librarian Aw ard in 1987. Farber w ill stay active in retirement, w orking part-time for Earlham, as w ell as writing, con­ sulting, and speaking. His successor w ill be T om Kirk, college li­ brarian o f Berea College and president o f ACRL. “T h ere’s a nice symmetry about this,” Farber said. “W h en T om was an undergraduate at Earlham and student assistant in the library, he w as the first person from Earlham I recruited into the profession and m y first staff addition. H o w appropriate that he should succeed m e!” M. J . Kreitzburg began early retirement in September 1993, having most recently served as reference librarian and head o f instructional s e r v ic e s at th e U n iv e r s ity o f P ittsb u rgh , Johnstown, with a secondary appointment in that co lle g e ’s Division o f Social Sciences as as­ sistant professor o f history. An apprentice at the Henry M. Seymour Library at Knox Col­ lege, Kreitzburg served 12 years there as a pro­ fessional librarian. In her 33 years o f academic librarianship, she held positions in all areas as librarian and library administrator. Arnold Rzepecki, librarian at Sacred Heart Ma­ jor Seminary in Detroit, retired in D ecem ber after 39 years o f employm ent. A m ember o f A L A and the M ichigan Library Association, R zepecki concentrated his professional asso­ ciation activities with the Catholic Library As­ sociation, w h ere he served on the Executive Board and as chair o f many committees. He has been the special projects editor o f the Catho­ lic Periodical and Literature Index and manag­ ing editor o f The Index to Free Periodicals. D eaths Carolyn H ixson Harris, director and senior lecturer o f preservation and conservation stud­ ies in the Graduate School o f Library and Infor­ mation Science at the University o f Texas at Austin (U T A ), died January 15,1994. Harris previously had been director o f the Preservation and Conservation Education Programs at C o­ lumbia University’s School o f Library Service, head o f the Preservation Department at Colum­ bia (1981-1987), and manuscript cataloger at U TA (1973-1980). She received her B.A. in art history and her MLS from UTA. Professionally active, Harris served as president o f the Re­ sources and Technical Services Division (RTSD) o f ALA (1988-1989). She w o n the John Brubaker Aw ard from the Catholic Library Association in 1983 and the Rex D illow Aw ard in 1990. Ruth Mortimer, curator o f rare books and as­ sistant librarian at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, recently died o f breast cancer at the age o f 62. Mortimer graduated summa cum laude from Smith and received a certifi­ cate at the Shakespeare Institute o f the Univer­ sity o f Birmingham, England, as w e ll as an MLS from Columbia University, N ew York. She spent 18 years at Harvard’s Houghton Library as rare b o o k cataloger for printing and graphic arts b efo re returning to Smith as curator o f rare books in 1975. A specialist in rare manuscripts and books, especially illustrated books o f the Renaissance, Mortimer com piled detailed cata­ logs o f 16th-century French and Italian books at Harvard that are considered standard refer­ ence works in the field. She also lectured in the Art Department and taught a course on the history o f books until shortly before her death. The first w om an to be elected president o f the Bibliographical Society o f America (1988-1992), she edited, with her husband John Lancaster, the society’s quarterly journal. Samuel Augustus Sizer, curator o f special col­ lections at the University o f Arkansas, Fayette­ ville (U A F ) from 1967 to 1982, died O ctober 3, 1993, at the age o f 68. Sizer began his career as a parish priest then received a master’s o f his­ tory from UAF.
