ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 3 0 / C&RL News PLMS an d RMLS p lan m erger The Preservation o f Library Materials Section (PLMS) and the Reproduction o f Library Materials Section (RLMS) of the A ssociation for Library Collections & Technical Ser­ vices D ivision (ALCTS) o f ALA are planning to becom e one section. In early N ovem ber, the presidents of PLMS and RLMS a n n o u n c e d form ation o f a joint task force to develop bylaws an d an im plem entation plan for the merger. Task force m em bers include both sec­ tion vice-presidents, Robert D eCandido and Robert Harriman, and the chairs o f both Policy & Planning Committees, Lorraine Olley and Debra McKern. The schedule for the proposed m erger calls for m em ber discussion during an op en m eeting at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in February 1994, a m em ber vote on the spring 1994 ballot, and, if the proposal passes, imple­ m entation at the end o f the ALA Annual Con­ ference in July 1994. Commission investigates central distribution o f m icrofilm The Commission on Preservation and Access has d eveloped a three-year pilot project to test the feasibility o f a central distribution center for print m asters o f preservation microfilms. Representatives from the Harvard, Yale, Colum­ bia, and New York Public Libraries, the Online C om puter Library Center (OCLC), Iron Moun­ tain, and the Commission m et in August 1993 to discuss details of the project. They devel­ o p ed procedures for standardizing retrieval in­ formation in bibliographic records, transferring retrieval information to Iron M ountain through OCLC, and shipping films to Iron Mountain. NEDCC publishes n e w technical leaflet The Northeast D ocum ent Conservation Center (NEDCC) has published a new technical leaflet entitled “Storage Solutions for Oversized Paper Artifacts.” W ritten by Mary T odd Glaser, the leaflet describes storage options for collections o f m aps, posters, large prints, architectural drawings, and o th er oversize p ap er objects. Glaser also offers advice on utilization o f stor­ age furniture and enclosures (folders, mats, and polyester film encapsulation) to protect these vulnerable objects. SOLINET a n d Chicora Foundation publish hurricane g uide The Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) and the Chicora Foundation have published a disaster preparedness guide entitled “Hurricane! Surviving the Big One: A Primer for Libraries, Museums and Archives.” It w ritten by Michael Trinkley, Chicora director, to help institutions protect staff, buildings, and collections. It cov­ ers building or retrofitting to mitigate hurricane dam age, recovery techniques, acquiring nec­ essary supplies, and rebuilding after the storm.
