L eon ard K n iffel, editor of the ALA publi­ cation Am erican Libraries, was named the recipient of the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Wayne State University’s Library and Information Science Program. Prior to assum ing the ed ito r’s duties in 1996, he served as Am erican Libraries acting editor, managing editor, and associate editor. Be­ fore joining Am erican L ibraries, K niffel w o rk e d in th e m ain branch and the Down­ town Business and For­ eign Language Collec­ tion of the Detroit Pub­ lic Library, w here he had experience in liter­ ary a n d c o m m u n ity programming. He is a Leonard K n iffe l cofounder of the Poetry R e s o u rc e C e n te r o f Michigan and edited its monthly Newsletter a n d Calendar. Kniffel has also taught w ork­ shops and courses on writing at the Univer­ sity of Michigan, Oakland University, and Wayne State. In the 1970s he founded Fallen Angel Press, a small literary publisher. D e b o r a h H erm an -M organ , assistant head of the Allen Memorial Library at the Univer­ sity of Hartford, P h ilip P o n e lla , head of public services for the Sibley Music Library at Eastman School of Music, and K ristin a S h a n to n , a librarian at the music library of the University of Illinois, received the Music Library Association’s (MLA) Walter Gerboth Award. The Gerboth Award is presented to members of the MLA who are in the first five years of their professional library careers to assist research-in-progress in music or music librarianship. A p p o in t m e n t s R o b ert L. “J a y ” J o r d a n has been nam ed president and chief executive officer of OCLC O nline C om puter Library Center, Inc. in Dublin, Ohio. He is the fourth president in OCLC’s 31-year history, succeeding K. Wayne Smith, w ho is stepping dow n after nearly ten years. Jordan previously served as president of new business development for the Infor­ mation Handling Services (IHS) Group, an international publisher of electronic informa­ tion databases, in Englewood, Colorado. Jor­ dan has held several key positions during his 23-year career with IHS Group: vice presi­ dent of U.S. sales; executive vice president of sales and marketing worldwide; president of IHS Engineering; and most recently, presi­ dent of new business development and presi­ dent of software, standards and print prod­ ucts. Jordan has served as a director of the Association for Information and Image Man­ agement and is currently director of the In­ formation Technology Industry Council, the Information Industry Association, and the Colorado Center for the Book. He has also been active with the Standards Engineering Society, the Standards Publishing Advisory Board, and the 1991 White House Confer­ ence on Libraries and Information Services. Jordan graduated with a bachelor’s in En­ glish Literature from Colgate University in 1966. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969. G lo ria n a St. C lair has been appointed uni­ versity librarian at Carnegie Mellon Univer­ sity (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She joins CMU from Penn State University, where she served as interim dean of the university libraries. She also served as interim associate 4 6 0 / C&RL News ■ June 1998 clean for planning and administrative services for the Paterno/Pattee Library and was asso­ ciate dean for informa­ tion access serv ices from 1990-96. St. Clair was also the assistant d ir e c to r at O re g o n State U niversity and Gloriana St. Clair head of acquisitions at Texas A&M University. Currently she is editor of the Journal o f A ca­ demic Librarianship; previously she served as editor of College a n d Research Libraries, ACRL’s research journal. She was also a mem­ ber of the Publications Committee and the board of C&RL News. She currently serves on the ACRL Budget and Finance Committee and was a member of the Ad Hoc Task Force on Redefining Scholarship. She is the secretary/ treasurer of ALA’s Library Research Round Table. She was a board member of the Penn­ sylvania Academic Libraries Connection Ini­ tiative. St. Clair is the author of many articles and editorials. A m ira A aron has been appointed direc­ tor of academic services at The Faxon Com­ pany, Inc. in Westwood, Massachusetts. D avid A dam s has been appointed head of library systems at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. C h a rles E g le s to n has been appointed cataloger of medieval and renaissance manu­ scripts at the Pierpont Morgan Libraiy in New York City. Williamson th e P o ssib ility of Sentence Extraction: Term Occurrences and Sentence Functions.” Bill Potter, chair of the award commit­ tee, said, “Williamson’s research promises to provide dramatic improvements in con­ necting students and scholars in the hu­ manities with the documents they need for their work. Ms. Williamson has dem ­ onstrated an outstanding scholarly record to date, and we are pleased to support her continuing efforts.” Williamson is currently a reference stu­ dent assistant at UNCCH and received her MLS from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1993. R e t i r e m e n t s E m m y M ills is retiring from the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after 30 years of service. Mills first w orked in Jackson Li­ brary as a staff member in the circulation department before taking time off to earn her MLS at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She returned to Jackson Library in 1972 as a special collections librarian. M artha R a n sley , head circulation librarian of the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), has retired after 32 years. She be­ gan her career as a library assistant in the circulation department, left to complete her MLS degree at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, returned as assistant catalog librarian in 1973, and became assistant cir­ culation librarian later that year. She was head circulation librarian from 1991 until her re­ tirement. She served as executive officer of the Academic Cabinet at UNCG from 1984— 86. D o n E. W ood, director of systems and bud­ get services at the Morris Library at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC), has retired after 28 years of services. Wood joined the SIUC Library as serials librarian in 1970. In 1994 he headed the systems department while continuing his duties as head of the serials department and liaison to the math­ ematics departm ent. C r o n e b e r g e r , director of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh since 1986, died in February due to complications fol­ lowing heart bypass surgery. Croneberger had served on the governing council of the ALA from 1984-88, the Intellectual Freedom Committee (1989-91), and Legislation Com­ mittee (1994-p resent) He was a past chair of the ALA Accreditation Committee and the Ur­ ban Libraries Council. During the challenge to the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996, Croneberger testified as an expert witness on behalf of the ALA. Bruce Ennis, lead counsel for the ALA and the coalition of organizations that challenged the CDA, said Croneberger’s assistance was truly invaluable. F ra n ces P o v sic , retired head librarian of the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) at Bowl­ ing Green State Univer­ sity (BGSU), has died. During her 17 years in the CRC, Povsic devel­ o p e d collections and services, e sta b lish e d the organizational sys­ tem for the materials, and prepared the de­ tailed plans for expan­ sion of the physical fa­Frances Povsic cilities in 1978. Her area of research was children’s and young adult’s literature of eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union. She authored two books: Eastern Europe in C hildren’s Litera­ ture: A n A nnotated Bibliography o f English- Language Books and The Soviet Union in Lit­ erature fo r Children a n d Young Adults: A n A nnotated Bibliography o f English-Language Books. She was prom oted to professor in 1988, and in 1989 she received the Friends’ Staff Award for M eritorious Service to Li­ braries and Learning Resources at BGSU. Povsic retired in 1990. J u n e S. S tillm a n , 68, retired librarian for the University o f Central Florida (UCF) Li­ brary in Orlando, Florida, died March 10. She graduated with a bachelor’s in library sci­ ence from Florida State University in 1951. She b e g a n h e r c a re e r as a lib rarian in Williston, Florida, and later at a public school in Fort Lauderdale. She then accepted a posi­ tion with the Orlando Junior College as a li­ b ra rian , rece iv e d an MLS in 1966, and later e a r n e d a s e c o n d master’s in English Lit­ eratu re. She b ecam e June Stillm an o n e o f th e c h a r te r members of the library staff at UCF (formerly Florida Technological University) in 1968. She was an active member for many years in the ALA, Florida Library Association, Southeast­ ern Library Association, and United Faculty of Florida. She was a member of Beta Phi Mu and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Soci­ eties, and received the UCF Excellence in Librarianship Award in 1984, and the Life­ time Service Award in 1996; she retired in December 1996.
