R o m an ian am bassador M ircea Ma- litza p resen ted th e gift on D ecem b er 1, th e 65th a n ­ niversary of th e fo u n d in g of th e m o d ern R o m an ian state. T h e collection represents a b ro a d ra n g e of subjects an d im p rin t dates an d contains m an y r e t­ rospective w orks on R o m an ian history no t p re v i­ ously held by th e L ib rary . • N ew York U niversity’s Fales L ib ra ry has re- c e iv e d t h e d i a r ie s o f E r i c h M a r i a R e m a r q u e (1898-1970), a u th o r of th e W o rld W a r I classic AZZ Q u iet on the W estern Front. T h e diaries consist of 22 com position books (well over 1,000 pages), are w ritte n in G e rm a n , a n d cover th e years 1918, 1935-1954, an d 1964-1965. T h e Fales L ib ra ry w ill house th e diaries in its R em arq u e Room , in w hich are located th e m anuscripts of m an y of th e a u th o r’s la te r w orks an d his personal lib ra ry , also d o n ated by th e a u th o r’s w id o w , actress P a u le tte G o d d a rd R em arq u e. • T rin ity College, H a rtfo rd , C o n n ecticu t, has been given a m ajor n a tu ra l history lib ra ry by O s­ trom E n d ers, of Avon, C o n n ecticu t. This p rim a r­ ily ornithological collection consists of som e 6,000 volum es an d is valued at over $1.2 m illion. Some highlights of th e gift are: a ch ro m o lith o g rap h of T he Birds o f A m erica , fr o m th e O riginal D raw ings o f John Jam es A u d u b o n , issued in 1860 by his son, John W oodhouse A udubon; th e six-volum e His- toire nouvelle des oiseaux d ’A fr iq u e by F rancois Le V a illa n t, p u b lish e d in 1802-1808; a n d R u ffo n ’s H istoire naturelle des oiseaux (1770-1785). T he collection is also rich in ra re colored p la te books, strongly su p p o rted by scientific texts an d p e rio d i­ cals from th e early 17th c e n tu ry to th e present. • T h e U niversity of C alifo rn ia, S an ta C ru z, has received an im p o rta n t collection of w orks by an d a b o u t A m erican w rite r an d p o litician U pton R. Sinclair (1878-1968). T h e gift includes 118 of Sin­ c la ir’s titles, as w ell as re p rin ts an d v a ria n t ed i­ tions, issues of U pton Sinclair’s E p ic N ew s, ep h e m ­ era re la tin g to th e Sinclair C en te n a ry (1978), some oral history tapes from th a t event, a n d th e files of th e U pton Sinclair Q uarterly. T h e collection w as d o n a te d by R obert an d G enevieve H a h n , of Aptos, C alifo rn ia. • T h e U niversity of S o uthern C alifo rn ia, Los Angeles, has ac q u ired th e m anuscripts an d lite ra ry c o rre s p o n d e n c e of Los A ngeles a u th o r R u p e rt H ughes (1872-1956). T h e collection w as d o n ated to th e university’s A m erican L ite ra tu re C ollection by M rs. F elix H u g h e s, w id o w of th e a u t h o r ’s b ro th er. • T h e U niversity of Texas a t A ustin has acq u ired a collection of 89 a u to g ra p h m usic m anuscripts by five F ren c h composers: G ab riel F a u ré , M aurice R avel, C la u d e D ebussy, A lbert Roussel, an d P aul D ukas. A bout 60% of Roussel’s en tire re p e rto ry is in clu d ed , as w ell as nearly one h a lf of R avel’s to tal m usical o u tp u t. Grants • C o rn e ll U n iv ersity L ib ra rie s , I th a c a , N ew York, have received a $1.5 m illion g ra n t from th e P ew C h a r ita b le T ru s t fo r th e in s ta lla tio n of a c o m p u te r-b a s e d in te g ra te d in fo rm a tio n system . T h e system w ill in te g ra te all 16 C ornell libraries w ith a single in fo rm atio n n etw o rk th a t w ill include access term in als in all libraries an d various d o rm i­ to ry an d academ ic buildings on cam pus. T h e LSCA T itle III g ra n t w ill provide for th e a d d itio n of th e ir records to th e O C L C d a ta ­ base. • E m b ry -R id d le A ero n au tical U niversity, D ay- to n a B each, F lo rid a , has been a w a rd e d a $66,000 g ra n t from th e E d y th Bush C h a rita b le F o u n d a tio n in W in te r P ark. T h e g ra n t w ill be used to p la n for th e developm ent an d im p le m e n ta tio n of in fo rm a ­ tio n al an d in stru ctio n al delivery systems in a new L e a rn in g Resources C en ter. A m ong th e areas to be investigated are space u tilizatio n , online in fo rm a ­ tion services, options for m ed ia usage, th e a p p lic a ­ tion of com puters on cam pus, an d th e establish­ m e n t of an in fo rm atio n n etw o rk linking th e th re e cam puses. • T h e Jam es Je ro m e H ill R eference L ib ra r y , Saint P au l, M innesota, received a g ra n t of $50,000 from th e N orthw est A rea F o u n d a tio n to establish a R evolving P ublishing F u n d . T h e first p u b licatio n w ill be a selection of letters from th e Jam es Jerom e Hill papers w h ich are housed in the lib rary . U rb an (1892-1977), a professor em eritus of his­ tory w ho ta u g h t at C in cin n ati from 1920 to 1953. In terest from th e en dow m ent w ill create th e M i­ riam B. U rban M em orial F u n d , w hich w ill be used to purchase books and journals on the history of m odern E urope. ■ ■ Cleveland Museum of Art’s new library O n F e b ru a ry 8 a th ree -sto ry ad d itio n to th e C leveland M useum of A rt opened to th e public. Tw o floors are devoted to th e M useum lib rary , one of th e leading a rt m useum libraries in th e U nited S tates. T h e to p flo o r ad d s n in e n ew g alleries, w hich have been in teg rated w ith tw elve adjacent galleries for a continuous, chronological in stalla­ tion of the M useum ’s a rt collections. L ib r a r y s p a c e — 19,400 s q u a re fe e t on tw o levels— is sufficient for at least the next 25 years. T he M useum estim ates th a t each year it will add 4,500 books, 7,500 p hotographs, and 10,000 slides, since th e lib rary adds to its holdings w ith each a d ­ dition to th e M useum collection, archeological dis­ covery, or significant study in th e history of art. T he new lib rary and galleries w ere m ad e possi­ ble by gifts from m any m em bers and friends of the M useum . A to tal of m ore th a n $6.7 m illion was needed for c o n stru c tio n , in te rio r fin ishing, an d renovation.
