D e a t h s J o s e p h C. Andrews, 62, head o f collection m anagem ent at the University o f Central Florida (UCF) Library, died June 24. Andrews began his library career at the St. Paul’s College library in 1971. He moved to Virginia Common­ wealth University in 1979, where he served in a variety o f positions, including reference librar­ ian, music librarian, acting head o f reference, and head of the circulation and reserve depart­ ment. Andrews began working in the UCF Li­ brary as a reference librarian in 1988. In 1989, he became head o f the acquisitions department, and in October 1999 assumed the responsibil­ ity o f head o f the new collection management department. Andrews was a staunch supporter o f the diversity initiative movement and was involved in several ALA divisions, including ACRL, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, Library Administration and Management Association/Library Organization and Management Section, Library and Infor­ mation Technology Association, Reference User Services Association (form erly RASD), and ALA’s Black Caucus. Francis (Jim ) Flood died on May 11. Flood was on the faculty o f the library and informa­ tion science program at the University o f Mis­ souri -Columbia (UMC) from 1951 until his re­ tirem ent in 1990. He served terms as chair of the Departm ent o f Li­ brary Science and as act­ ing dean o f the school during that time. He re­ turned to the faculty af­ ter his retirem ent to serve several more years, including a second term as chair o f the depart­ Francis J. Flood ment o f library science. Flood was instrumental in securing ALA accredi­ tation for UMC’s master’s program in 1969- Edith B aker Hampel, 85, who retired from Temple University Libraries in February 2000, died o f cancer on Ju ne 16. She had a 60-year career as a librarian, the last 30 o f which were spent at T em p le’s Paley Library, w here she served at on e time as head o f the reference department. She also served for more than ten years as a member o f the executive committee o f the Temple Association o f University Pro­ fessionals. Early in her career, Hampel worked at the University o f Pennsylvania Libraries and at Tim es In c .’s Editorial Research Library in New York. A. D ean Larsen, retired associate university librarian at Brigham Young University (BYU), died on May 20, after a long battle with cancer. He was employed by the BYU Library for 40 years, retiring in 1995, and was principally re­ sponsible for the acquisition o f more than 3- million volumes during his career, adding not only to the general collection, but building a world-class special collections, as well. Prior to his death, Larsen and his wife, Jean, donated their personal collection o f more than 1,800 books, pamphlets, maps, photographs, and post­ cards dealing with Yellowstone National Park to BYU and established an endowment for its continued growth. Rosemary Little, Princeton University’s Poli­ tics, Public Administration and Law librarian, died on December 23, 2001.
