This four-day w orkshop is designed to im­ prove the skills of collections conservators w ho w ork on circulating b o o k collections. The curriculum is based on the b ook repair procedure m anual p repared by the Univer­ sity of Iowa Libraries’ Conservation D epart­ m ent, and will be taught by Sally Hansen. Course registration, including accom m o­ dations at the center, costs $640 (scholar­ ships are available). Class size is limited to ten . CHIN W eb site redesign The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) has scheduled the launch of its newly redesigned Web site for May 1, 2002. The augm ented Web site will build on strengths of the present one, plus add new content devoted to developing the skills necessary for creating and m anaging digital content, im proved navigation tools, and a sitewide search engine. Both form er and new con­ tent will be available free-of-charge to ev­ eryone, including non-CHIN members. A user nam e and passw ord are no longer required. The new Web site will retain the previ­ ous URL at h ttp://w w w .chin.gc.ca. DLF benchm ark The Digital Library Federation (DLF) has pro­ duced and endorsed B en ch m a rk f o r Digital Reproductions o f M onographs a n d Serials. This docum ent identifies the m inimum tech­ nical specifications for achieving fidelity w hen creating digital m asters of printed li­ brary materials. Digital m asters are intended to be faithful reproductions of the original source docum ents, and should be com plete, provide quality images, m aintain original page order, and su p p o rt pro d u ctio n of a printed page facsimile in the original size. The benchm ark also supports the creation of structural and administrative metadata, per­ sistence (long-term access), and interoper­ ability. (SOLINET) will offer two w orkshops late this spring. “A udiovisual C ollection M anage­ m ent,” taught by Alan Lewis of the Special Media Archives Services Division of the Na­ tional Archives and Records Administration (NARA), will be held on May 23, 2002 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. ‘Sur­ viving th e Big O n e ,” tau g h t by M ichael Trinkley of the Chicora Foundation, will be held June I I , 2002, at the Tower Road Branch Library in Gainesville, Florida. In this in­ stance, the Big O ne is a hurricane. Registration for each w orkshop costs $95 for SOLINET m em bers or $135 for nonm em ­ bers, with discounts available for early regis­ tration.
