H al W. H all, c u ra to r of th e Science Fic­
tio n  a n d  Fantasy R esearch C ollection at 
Texas A&M U niversity Libraries, has b e e n  
n am ed  th e Irene B. H oadley/F riends of the 
Sterling C. Evans Library professor. N am ed 
for th e form er d ire c to r of th e Sterling C. 
Evans Library, th e professorship is aw arded 
to a lib rarian  sch o lar for an o u tstan d in g  
research  project. H all’s project, “M arketing 
a R esearch C ollection: D e v elo p in g  Schol­
arly Tools as a M ethod o f M arketing Li­
brary R esearch C ollections,” will create the 
first W eb-based register o f library collec­
tions o f scien ce fiction a n d  fantasy and 
d ev elo p  a register of individual a u th o r co l­
lections in libraries a n d  o f b o o k  m a n u ­
scripts. Hall will c o n tin u e  to w o rk  o n  the 
Science Fiction a n d  Fantasy R esearch D a­
tab ase th ro u g h  2003.

B ill M itchell, librarian emeritus at the Uni­
versity of Kansas, has been  honored by the 
Bibliographical Society of America with the 
creation of the William L. Mitchell Prize for 
Bibliographical or D ocum entary Work on 
Early British Periodicals or Newspapers. The 
prize honors Mitchell’s w ork as associate spe­
cial collections librarian and curator of the 
Bond Periodical and N ew spaper Collection 
at Spencer Research Library. The Mitchell Prize 
will be aw arded for the first time in 2003 and 
will carry a cash aw ard of $1,000.

m ation m anager, at Boston College’s O ’Neill 
Library, have b e e n  a p p o in te d  Visiting P ro ­
gram  O fficers CVPO) for th e A ssociation of 
Research Libraries. T he VPOs will focus on  
identifying th e role o f th e  academ ic library 
in s u p p o rt o f data m ining for rese a rc h  a n d  
d e scrib e  any e x p e rie n c e s rese a rc h  librar­
ies a n d  institutions m ight have w ith data 
m ining tech n o lo g ies.

L au rie S t a c k p o le , th e  N aval R e se a rc h  
L aboratory’s (NRL) c h ie f librarian, is the 
recipient of a Navy M eritorious Civilian Ser­
vice Award for h er significant contributions 
to  th e naval library com m unity. B ecause 
o f h e r v isio n  a n d  le a d e rs h ip , lib ra rian s 
th ro u g h o u t th e Navy are p o s itio n e d  to c o ­
operatively advance digital inform ation ser­
vices in the sciences across the D epartm ent 
of th e  Navy, b o th  in a state-of-the-art d e ­
livery sy stem  (TORPEDO U ltra) a n d  in 
consortial licensing of content. Before join­
ing NRL, Stackpole se rv e d  in various p o si­
tions of pro g ressiv e m an a g e m e n t re s p o n ­
sibility, culm inating in h e r a p p o in tm e n t as 
acting d ire c to r o f th e library a n d  inform a­
tio n  services division o f th e N ational O c e ­
anic a n d  A tm o sp h eric A dm inistration in 
Rockville, M aryland. She is th e 1997 re ­
cipient of th e  NRL C om m anding O fficer’s 
Aw ard for A chievem ent in Equal E m ploy­
m ent O pp o rtu n ity , th e 1997 Special Librar­
ies A ssociation In fo rm atio n  Today Award 
for In n o v atio n s in T echnology in a Library 
S e t t i n g , a n d  t h e  1 997 ALA F e d e r a l  
L ib r a r ia n ’s R o u n d  T a b le  A c h ie v e m e n t 
Award. Stackpole is a m em b e r o f a n u m ­

E u ro p e an  Divisions.

G loria W erner, university librarian at UCLA 
since 1990, has announced her retirement, 
effective June 30, 2002. W erner spent most of 
her early career at UCLA’s Louise M. Darling 
Biomedical Libraiy, serving in turn as refer­
ence librarian, head  of reference, associate 
biomedical librarian for public services, and 
biomedical librarian. She also served as as­
sistant dean  of the School of Medicine and 
director of the Pacific Southwest Regional 
Medical Library Service. W erner then served 
as associate university librarian for technical 
services, with major administrative responsi­
bility for the developm ent of ORION, the 
UCLA Library’s original online information sys­
tem. W erner was president of the Associa­
tion of R esearch Libraries (1996-97) and 
served on the initial steering committee for 
ARL’s Scholarly Publishing and Academic Re­
source Coalition. She also edited the Bulletin 
o f  the M edical Library Association (1979-83) 
and chaired the first policy committee of the 
national Coordination of O nline Serials P ro ­
gram.

D e a t h s

P hyllis D anner, associate professor of library 
administration at the University of Illinois Li­
brary at Urbana-Champaign and archivist of 
the Sousa Archives for Band Research, has died. 
D u rin g  h e r  te n u r e , 
Danner provided biblio­
graphic management for 
the collection of original 
papers by John Philip 
Sousa, American band­
master and com poser. 
She also secured a grant 
from the National En­
dow m ent for the H u­
manities to preserve the 
collection, and she pub­ Phyllis D anner
lished the only complete 
annotated bibliography o f Sousa’s papers. 
Danner’s interest in the papers began in 1984, 
w hen she was appointed as assistant to the 
director of University Bands. In 1994, she be­
came official caretaker of the Sousa Archives 
w hen the collection was transferred from Uni­
versity Bands to the University Library. ■
