B ill M itchell, librarian emeritus at the Uni­ versity of Kansas, has been honored by the Bibliographical Society of America with the creation of the William L. Mitchell Prize for Bibliographical or D ocum entary Work on Early British Periodicals or Newspapers. The prize honors Mitchell’s w ork as associate spe­ cial collections librarian and curator of the Bond Periodical and N ew spaper Collection at Spencer Research Library. G loria W erner, university librarian at UCLA since 1990, has announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2002. W erner spent most of her early career at UCLA’s Louise M. Darling Biomedical Libraiy, serving in turn as refer­ ence librarian, head of reference, associate biomedical librarian for public services, and biomedical librarian. She also served as as­ sistant dean of the School of Medicine and director of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Service. W erner then served as associate university librarian for technical services, with major administrative responsi­ bility for the developm ent of ORION, the UCLA Library’s original online information sys­ tem. W erner was president of the Associa­ tion of R esearch Libraries (1996-97) and served on the initial steering committee for ARL’s Scholarly Publishing and Academic Re­ source Coalition. She also edited the Bulletin o f the M edical Library Association (1979-83) and chaired the first policy committee of the national Coordination of O nline Serials P ro ­ gram. D e a t h s P hyllis D anner, associate professor of library administration at the University of Illinois Li­ brary at Urbana-Champaign and archivist of the Sousa Archives for Band Research, has died. D u rin g h e r te n u r e , Danner provided biblio­ graphic management for the collection of original papers by John Philip Sousa, American band­ master and com poser. She also secured a grant from the National En­ dow m ent for the H u­ manities to preserve the collection, and she pub­ Phyllis D anner lished the only complete annotated bibliography o f Sousa’s papers. Danner’s interest in the papers began in 1984, w hen she was appointed as assistant to the director of University Bands. In 1994, she be­ came official caretaker of the Sousa Archives w hen the collection was transferred from Uni­ versity Bands to the University Library. ■
